  • This paper introduces a simulator to assess the impacts of the wind and the airframe vibration on the performance of the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar mounted in an aircraft. The AESA radar is mounted on the nose cone of an aircraft, and vibration occurs due to the drag force. This vibration affects the behavior of the AESA radar and can cause phase errors in signal. The simulator adopts the geometric model for nose cone, the mathematical models on the rigid-body dynamics of the aircraft, the average/turbulent winds, and the mode/ambient vibrations to compute the position and the attitude of the radar accurately. Numerical studies reflecting a set of test scenarios were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed simulator.

  • This paper shows the research about radar target recognition using the measured radar signals from MSU(Michgan State University) bistatic radar system. In this research, we first did the bistatic measurements at $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ using F-14, Mig-29, and F-22 scale models. Then, we extract the target feature vectors using time-frequency analysis methods such as STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) and CWT(Continous Wavelet Transform) and perform the target classification test using MLP(Multi-layerd Perceptron) neural network. The results show that the target classification performance is too much dependent on the bistatic angles and the best performance is obtained at the $60^{\circ}$ bistatic angle.

  • Recently, for detection of low-RCS targets, bistatic radar and multistatic radar have been widely employed. In this paper, we present the process of deriving the received signal modeling of the bistatic MIMO radar system and deals with the performance analysis of applying the bistatic signal to the ML arrival angle estimation algorithm. In case of the ML algorithm, as the number of the targets increases, azimuth search dimension for DOA estimation also increases, which implies that the ML algorithm for multiple targets is computationally very intensive. To solve this problem a closed-form expression of estimation error is presented for performance analysis of the algorithm.

  • In this paper, a study was conducted on the design of an array element that can be applied to the AESA radar for seeker. An antenna for application to AESA radar should choose an optimal radiation element to be applied to an array antenna in order to secure electronical beam steering characteristics, and consider beam steering characteristics when designing. In particular, in order to satisfy the wide-angle beam steering characteristics, the wide-angle impedance matching technique should be used to minimize the scan blindness region that may occur during wide-angle steering. As such, securing the stability of system operation is becoming an important design consideration for AESA radar. In this paper, WAIM is applied to the end of the radiation element to improve the characteristics of the radiation element applied to the AESA radar antenna device, and the change in the performance of the active reflection coefficient, which is a stable operation index of the system, is reviewed. The final performance result verified the validity of the proposed method by mathematically synthesizing the simulation data.

  • The performance of radars operated near an offshore wind farm region may be degraded due to the distorted signals by wind turbines. This degradation of radar systems includes ghost effects and doppler effects by a tower, nacelle, and turbine blades consisting of the wind turbine. In this paper, electromagnetic wave backscatterings from a offshore wind turbine are numerically simulated in terms of temporal radar cross section and radar cross section spectra, using a quasi-static approach based on physical optics and physical theory of diffraction. The simulations are carried out at 3.05 GHz for the seven yaw angles and four blade pitch angles. From the results, radar cross section values and doppler effect as turbine blades rotate are investigated.

  • The UHF band wind profiler radars of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), which produces the vertical profile of the wind, need to be calibrated for better performance. The capabilities of the radar in detecting even light precipitation were used for the calibration of which reference takes the hourly series of ground rainfall rate measured by a rain gauge at the radar site. This calibration must be renewed regularly according to the methodology implemented in this work since errors occur on the wind vectors in the clear sky without reflectivity calibration. Comparing the wind by wind profiler with that by radiosonde, the optimal radar constant contributed to the improvement of wind accuracy.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a M&S tool for analyzing detection coverage and target localization in bistatic radar system. The detection coverage determined by radar parameters is meaningful when it satisfies the clear line-of-sight condition. We improved the method to find the minimum altitudes of transmitter and receiver for meeting the condition by considering three-dimensional coverage. Its computational burden is not problematic because the calculation is for maximizing the performance of the radar and does not demand a real-time operation. In addition, target localization on three-dimensional earth model based on the information of the height, longitude, and latitude is proposed instead of the previous unpractical calculation on two-dimensional bistatic plane. Its precalculated result can reduce its computation burden and it is suitable for real-time estimation of target location.

  • For multi-mode radar signals in complex electromagnetic environment, different modes of one emitter tend to be deinterleaved into several emitters, called as "extension", when processing received signals by use of existing sorting methods. The "extension" problem inevitably deteriorates the sorting performance of multi-mode radar signals. In this paper, a novel method based on spatial data mining is presented to address above challenge. Based on theories of data field, we describe the distribution information of feature parameters using potential field, and makes partition clustering of parameter samples according to revealed distribution features. Additionally, an evaluation criterion based on cloud model membership is established to measure the relevance between different cluster-classes, which provides important spatial knowledge for the solution of the "extension" problem. It is shown through numerical simulations that the proposed method is effective on solving the "extension" problem in multi-mode radar signal sorting, and can achieve higher correct sorting rate.

  • In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a method to efficiently scan a restricted search area within the limited transmitter power and time in a bistatic radar and to track a series of transmitted pulses using the receiver beam which has ideally matched to the pulse propagation rate. In this paper, we have discussed the interrelationship between the pulse chasing and time and frequency/phase synchronization and described the effects of the identified system instability factors on two kinds of MTI filter configuration, single delay-line and double delay-line, in the bistatic radar. And also, we have confirmed that the overall system improvement is restricted by a lower improvement factor among identified them, and discussed the allowable tolerance of the time and frequency/phase synchronization in the bistatic system.

  • Radar task scheduling deals with the assignment of task to efficiently enhance the radar performance on the limited resource environment. In this paper, total weighted tardiness is adopted as the objective function of task scheduling in operation of multiple multi-function radars. To take into account real-time implementability, heuristic index-based methods are presented and investigated. Numerical simulations for generic search and track scenarios are performed to evaluate the proposed methods, in particular investigating the effectiveness of multi-radar operation concepts.
