  • Rubber air spring (RAS) is a special suspension device for the industries of automobile, railroad car and other transportation. A RAS serves as a spring component with the elastic effect of compression and expansion of air in a composite rubber bag. The main component of RAS is the rubber sleeve. Rubber sleeve is the composite which is made up of combination of chloroprene rubber (CR) and nylon 6 cord, and the adhesive strength between CR and nylon 6 cord is very important. In this study, considering the effects of additives in rubber sleeve, various physical properties were tested to find the optimal combination of composition and conditions. Further, in order to select the optimum orientation of the reinforcing fibers, numerical analysis was performed using the finite elements method. After assembling all components of RAS, it was mounted on an actual vehicle, and then it was tested air leakage, fatigue life and fundamental properties.

  • Steel clapping plate is used to connecting rubber body in rubber dam. However, once the steel clapping plate corrodes, it may cause faults, such as the same problems experienced by typical reinforcing steel. This study evaluated the applicability of glass fiber reinforced polymer composite(GFRP) clapping plate as a substitute for steel clapping plate. Absorption and load test were conducted to evaluate the decrease in durability of GFRP clapping plate exposed to deterioration environments. In the durability test results, the absorption rate of GFRP clapping plate was appeared as 0.6~1.0% in 50 day of immersion time. Also, the fracture load decreased with accelerated degradation environment exposure. Moreover, the absorption rate in GFRP clapping plate increased as degradation progressed, reducing the fracture load.

  • In the case of fiber/rubber composites for tire applications, the interfacial adhesion between fiber and rubber significantly affects the physical properties of the finished products. Generally, organic synthetic fibers used for tire cords are treated with resorcinol formaldehyde latex(RFL) primer on the surface of the fiber to improve the adhesion to rubber. Changes of adhesion between rubber and tire cords might weaken as temperature rises due to overheating of car engine and friction with road. In this study, the effects of temperature on the primer treated polyketone cord/rubber composites and the changes in interfacial adhesion were investigated. Polyketone cord/rubber composites were prepared after RFL solution treatment on the surface of polyketone fibers. After that, composites was thermally aged at different temperature conditions(60, 80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$) and times(1, 5, 10, 15days). The adhesion strength of polyketone cord/rubber composite treated with RFL primer was higher than untreated composite by more than 3 times. After heat aging, the adhesion strength of untreated polyketone cord/rubber composites increased while the RFL treated polyketone cord/rubber composites decreased somewhat.

  • The surface of Alnico, one of the industrial dust waste, was treated with 1,3,5-trivinyl-1,3,5-trimethylcyclotrisilazane (VMS) as a surface treating agent and used as the filler for vibration isolator rubber. Maleated EPDM prepared from bulk polymerization of EPDM with maleic anhydride was copolymerized with ${\alpha},{\omega}$-bis(3-aminopropyl)polydimethylsiloxane to obtain maleated EPDM-polydimethylsiloxane copolymer (MEPDM-PDMS). EPDM/Alnico/MEPDM-PDMS vibration isolator rubber was prepared from compounding with Alnico treated with surface treating agent, 25 and 50 phrs to EPDM, respectvely based on 1 to 10 wt% of MEPDM-PDMS to EPDM. From the measurement of the thermal properties to the rubber, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) for the rubber containing maleated EPDM-PDMS copolymer was slightly lower temperature, $33^{\circ}C$ than EPDM rubber, and also DMA results showed higher tan ${\delta}$ peak to the rubber prepared from compounding with EPDM-PDMS copolymer. From the results, rubber prepared using EPDM-PDMS copolymer had better vibration isolator property.

  • Earlier works have shown that excessive shear stiffness at the steel-concrete interface causes a non-uniform distribution of shear force in composite structures. When the shear studs are wrapped at the fixed end with flexible materials with a low elastic modulus, the shear stiffness at the interface is reduced. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of silicone rubber-sleeve mounted on shear studs on the shear stiffness of steel-concrete composite structures. Eighteen push-out tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior of silicone rubber-sleeved shear stud groups (SRS-SSG). The dimension and arrangement of silicon rubber-sleeves (SRS) were taken into consideration. Test results showed that the shear strength of SRS-SSG was higher than that of a shear stud group (SSG), without SRS. For SRS-SSG with SRS heights of 50 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, the shear strengths were improved by 13%, 20% and 9%, respectively, compared to the SSG alone. The shear strengths of SRS-SSG with the SRS thickness of 2 mm and 4 mm were almost the same. The shear stiffness of the SRS-SSG specimens with SRS heights of 50 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm were 77%, 67% and 66% of the SSG specimens, respectively. Test results of specimens SSG-1 and predicted values based on the three design specifications were compared. The nominal single stud shear strength of SSG-1 specimens was closest to that calculated by the Chinese Code for Design of Steel Structures (GB50017-2017). An equation is proposed to consider the effects of SRS for GB50017-2017, and the predicted values based on the proposed equation agree well with the tested results of SRS-SSG.

  • Surface-modified silica holds considerable promise in the development of advanced materials for good mechanical properties and stability. In this work, the surface and mechanical interfacial properties of silicas treated with silane coupling agents, such as Y-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPS). Y-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and Y-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS), are investigated. The effect of silane surface treatments of silica on the surface properties and surface energetics are studied in terms of surface functional values and contact angle measurements. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the silica/rubber composites are studied by the composite tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$). As a result. the mechanical interfacial properties are improved in the case of silane-treated composites compared with untreated one. It reveals that the functional groups on silica surface by silane surface treatments play an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces in a silica-filled rubber system.

  • Finite element analyses of structures made of the fiber reinforced composites require an adequate method to characterize the high anisotropic behavior induced by one or several layers of fiber cords with different spatial orientation embedded in a rubber matrix. This paper newly proposes a continuum based rebar element considering change of the orientation of the fiber during deformation of the composite. The mechanical behavior of the embedded fiber is modeled using two-node bar elements in order to consider the relative deformation and spatial orientation of the embedded fiber. For improvement of the analysis accuracy, the load-displacement curve of fiber is applied to the stiffness matrix of fiber. A finite element program is constructed based on the total Lagrangian formulation considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Finite element analyses of the tensile test are carried out in order to evaluate the validity of the proposed method. Analysis results obtained with the proposed method provides realistic representation of the fiber reinforced rubber composite compared to results of other two models by the Halpin-Tsai equation and a rebar element in ABAQUS/Standard.

  • 2 ply laminated composite is regarded to simulate the interply behavior of the belt layer of the tire. It was cone with 3 dimensional FE(Finite Element) analysis to determine interply shear stress and strain. Widthwise, the shear strain was measured by the pin method. These results are compared with those of CLT(classical lamination theory) in center region and those of Kassapoglou's and Kelsey's theory in edge region. In the FE analysis. rubber is assumed as linear elastic material. and rubber/cord laminate as the orthotropic material composed of cord and rubber In the FE result, interlaminar shear stress causing the interlaminar delamination has the largest value in the edge region of the inner rubber layer. Numerical results obtained coincides with CLT well in the center region, and agrees with other theoretical result little in the edge region.

  • In order to evaluate the effects of various finishing devices (Sof-Lex disc, diamond point, rubber point, fussure bur) on the surface roughness or two composite resins (Restodent, Enamelite 500), 15 specimens for each composite resin were made in the mold. Composite resin was prepared on the mixing pad by manufacturer's direction and filled in the mold cavity. A sheet of matrix is immediately placed on it and hold for 5 minutes to polymerize the resin. Surface finish was done after 10 minutes from the start of mixing. Scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometer were used to evaluate the surface roughness, porositites and striations of dental composite resins. The following results were observed; 1. The best finished surface was formed by celluloid matrix band. 2. Rubber point was excellent polishing device for Restodent. 3. Sof-Lex disc was the device of choice for polishing Enamelite 500. 4. Different polishing methods were effective for different composite resins. 5. SEMs of variously finished surfaces supported the profilometer measurements.

  • $\alpha,\omega-Vinyl$ poly(dimethyl-methylphenyl) siloxane propelymer (VPMPS ) was prepared by the equilibrium polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane $(D_4)$, 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triphenylcyclotrisiloxane $(D_3^{MePh})$, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-divinylsiloxane (MVS) as end-blocker. And also, $\alpha,\omega-hydrogen$ poly(dimethyl-methyltrifluoropropyl)siloxane prepolymer (HPDMFS) was prepared from $D_4$, 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3.5-trifluoropropylcyclotrisiloxane $(D_3^{MeF3P})$, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane. Poly(organosiloxane) rubber composite containing high thermal conductive filler was prepared by compounding VPMPS, HPDMFS, spherical alumina, and catalyst in high speed dissolver. The crosslinking density of poly (organosiloxane) composite was measured by oscillation rheometer. Poly(organosiloxane) composites of TC-POXR-2 and TC-POXR-4 prepared by controlling average diameters of thermal conductive filler, spherical alumina according to Horsfield's packing model were shown to 1.13 W/mK for TC-POXR-2 and 1.19 W/mK for TC-POXR-4.
