  • Numerical optimization method of long endurance airfoil has been performed with a RSM(Response Surface Method) for smart UAV wing design. For the base line airfoil, NACA 64621 airfoil was selected and optimized to satisfy long endurance condition for smart UAV Aerodynamic coefficients required for RSM are obtained by using 2-D Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The optimized airfoil showed increased maximum lift and endurance factors together with reasonable thickness ratio.

  • Presently, rapidly changing and unstable global economic environments demand engineers. Products should be designed to increase profits by lowering costs and provide distinguished performance compared with competitors. This study aims to optimize the design of the power-transmission drive shaft. The mass is reduced as an objective function, and the stress is constrained under a constant value. To reduce the number of experiments, CCD (central composite design) and D-Optimal are used for the experimental design. RSM (response surface methodology) is employed to construct a regression model for the objective functions and constraint function. In this problem, there is only one objective function for the mass. The other objective function gives 1; thus, NSGA-II is used.

  • This paper presents the reliability analysis technique on the dynamic characteristics of the torsion beam consisting the suspension system of passenger car. We utilize response surface method (RSM) and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain the response surface model that describes the limit state function for the natural frequencies of the torsion beam. Using the response surface model and the design optimization technique, we have obtained the optimized section considering the reliability of the torsion beam structure.

  • This paper reports on an investigation (using RSM with commercial CFD software) of the performance characteristics of the impeller in a centrifugal pump. Geometric parameters of vane plane development were defined with the meridional shape and frontal view of the impeller. The parameters are focused on the blade-angle distributions through the impeller in a fixed meridional geometry. For screening, a $2^k$ factorial design has been used to identify the important design parameters. The objective functions are defined as the total head rise and the total efficiency at the design flow-rate. From the $2^k$ factorial design results, it is found that the incidence angles and the exit blade angle are the most important parameters influencing the performance of the pump.

  • This parer presents the application of response surface methodology (RSM) to design optimization for two types of synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) one has 12 slots with distributed winding, and the other has 6 slots with concentrated winding, to improve the ratio between torque ripple and average torque. The usefulness of RSM in optimization problem of SynRM is verified as compared with the results of finite element analysis. In the end, the optimized two SynRMs are compared with SynRM currently used in air-conditioning compressor in connection with torque performance and loss.

  • This study examines a regeneration process using hot air heated by solar radiation to recover absorption potential by evaporating moisture in liquid desiccant. More specifically, this study is aimed at finding the optimum operating condition of the regenerator by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so-called design of experiment, and optimization techniques. It is demonstrated that an optimization model to find the optimum operating condition can be obtained using the functional relationship between regeneration rate and affecting factors which is approximated on the basis experimental results.

  • An O/W (oil in water) emulsion, wheat germ oil raw material, was produced by using natural wheat germ oil and composite sugar-ester. The effects of variables such as the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) value, added emulsifier amount, and emulsification time on the average particle size, emulsification viscosity and ESI of O/W wheat germ oil emulsion were investigated. The parameters of the emulsification process produced by the central composite design model of the response surface methodology (CCD-RSM), which is a reaction surface analysis method, were simulated and optimized. The optimum process conditions obtained from this paper for the production of O/W wheat germ oil emulsion were 8.4, 6.4 wt%, 25.4 min for the HLB value, amount of emulsifier, and emulsion time, respectively. The predicted reaction values by CCD-RSM model under the optimum conditions were 206 nm, 8125 cP, and 98.2% for mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity, and ESI, respectively, based on the emulsion after 7 days. The MDS, viscosity and ESI of the emulsion obtained from actual experiments were 209 nm, 7974 cP and 98.7%, respectively. Therefore, it was possible to design an optimization process for evaluating the stability of the emulsion of wheat germ oil raw material by CCD-RSM.

  • In this study, the O/W emulsification processes with the natural surfactants that were extracted from Medicago sativa L. and Sapindus saponaria L. as emulsifiers were optimized using the central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM). Herein, independent parameters were the amounts of mixed emulsifiers, the mixing ratio of natural emulsifiers (soapberry saponin/alfalfa saponin), and the emulsification time, whereas the reaction parameters were the emulsion stability index (ESI), mean droplet size (MDS), and antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scanvenging activity). Through basic experiments, the ranges of operation variables for the amount of mixed emulsifiers, the mixing ratio of natural emulsifiers, and the emulsification time were 12~14 wt%, 30~70%, and 20~30 min, respectively. The optimum operation variables deduced from CCD-RSM for the amount of mixed emulsifiers, the mixing ratio of natural emulsifiers, and the emulsification time were 13.2 wt%, 44.2%, and 25.8 min, respectively. Under these optimal conditions, the expected values of the ESI, MDS, and antioxidant activity were 88.7%, 815.5 nm, and 38.7%, respectively. And, the measured values of the ESI, MDS, and antioxidant activity were 90.6%, 830.2 nm, and 39.6%, respectively, and the average experimental error for validating the accuracy was about 2.1%. Therefore, it was possible to design an optimization process for evaluating the O/W emulsion process using CCD-RSM.

  • The Box-Benhken Design (BBD) model of response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize fluoride adsorption conditions in water using a 350℃ thermally treated cow bone. Water temperature, pH, contact time, and initial fluoride concentration were selected as variables to be optimized. A second order reaction equation was obtained from a Box-Behnken Design DoE experimental matrix of 29 runs. R2 and p-value of the model were 0.9242 and <0.0001, respectively, indicating that the selected variables had a very substantial effect on the adsorption results. The optimized adsorption capacity of the thermally synthesized bone char was estimated to be 6.46 mgF/g at the water temperature of 39.68℃, pH 6.25, contact time of 88.81 minutes and an initial fluorine concentration of 14.64 mgF/L.
