Production of Implant Models using Rapid Prototyping (Rapid Prototyping을 이용한 인체 모형 제작)

  • Making physical models of human body is not only time-consuming but also very expensive since they are usually hand-made. This problem is doubled with implant fabrication because an implant is almost always custom-made. Recently, RP is emerging as an alternative, and many RP applications are proposed in the medical field. The major advantage of this approach is due to a significant reduction of both time and cost required or the production. However, the technology is not much in practical use yet, especially in Korea. In this paper, we provide a method of generating STL files that are the standard format to RP machines. The original data are obtained from two-dimensional slices of MRI/CT machine. Example bone models have been produced using a commercially available RP machine, and the results are presented.

Prediction of Acute Toxicity to Fathead Minnow by Local Model Based QSAR and Global QSAR Approaches

  • We applied several machine learning methods for developing QSAR models for prediction of acute toxicity to fathead minnow. The multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) method were applied to predict 96 h $LC_{50}$ (median lethal concentration) of 555 chemical compounds. Molecular descriptors based on 2D chemical structure were calculated by PreADMET program. The recursive partitioning (RP) model was used for grouping of mode of actions as reactive or narcosis, followed by MLR method of chemicals within the same mode of action. The MLR, ANN, and two RP-MLR models possessed correlation coefficients ($R^2$) as 0.553, 0.618, 0.632, and 0.605 on test set, respectively. The consensus model of ANN and two RP-MLR models was used as the best model on training set and showed good predictivity ($R^2$=0.663) on the test set.

  • Nowadays, as the development period of new products becomes shorter and consumer's requirement is more various, the importance of Rapid Prototyping Technology has been rapidly increased. Rapid Prototyping makes prototypes or frictional parts directly using the 3D CAD data. But RP machines can make prototypes in limit size. For making large size prototype, we slice solid which is made of STL file, and then glue sliced solid. And if contact area of part is small, union solid will be easily destroyed for going down of adhesion. So we need to expand contact area, 1 suggest making a section into stair shape. This paper is concerned with slicing solid on STL file and improving on adhesion.

  • The technical combination of RP and RT has a potential for rapid manufacturing of three-dimensional parts. In the present work a new RP system, $VLM-_{ST}$, is proposed to manufacture net shapes of 3D prototypes. ㅁ human head shape and a kob shape are manufactured by the $VLM-_{ST}$ apparatus. In addition, a new RT technology, which utilizes a RTV molding technique and a triple reverse process technique, is proposed to manufacture net shapes of 3D plastic parts using prototypes of $VLM-_{ST}$. A plastic part of the knob shape os produced by the proposed RT technology. The combination of the proposed RP and RT enables the manufacturing of a plastic knob within two days.

  • In order to reduce lead-time and cost, recently the technology of Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (PR/M) has been used widely. So various RP/M methods have been developed and these systems commercialized several years ago. But we have carried out rapid product, such as sphere, by the milling process instead of RP system. in the case of sphere with three-dimensional shape. the machining method using conventional milling machine has resulted in some troubles because of its deformation and lack of stiffness which is due to usual work piece set up method. In this paper, the feasibility of milling process which is divided into two steps such as the-upper-and-1ower-face milling process using supporting material were investigated and suggested.

  • Direct laser sintering (DLS) technology for the resign coated sand is one of attractive technologies to produce molds and cores for the foundry industry rapidly and cost effectively. The objective of this case study is to develop casting pilot models using computer simulation technology, DLS RP machine and industrial computed tomography. The proposed casting design was verified by the Z-Cast software in the fields of fluid flow and solidification during the casting process. Casting parts with aluminum alloy using the post-curing treated sand moulds and cores are accurate to dimension and defect free.

  • By supply of high performance computer becomes all industries automation and convenient of our life. Can speak that is pursuit of swiftness and variety that is prior most development of information society and production system in competitive industrial design product development process. Specially, students who consumer personality studies design according to variableness must present idea in a short time. Therefore, find a new tool that can show quick modeling result for present of new idea or fast design specifications examination and production at college or corporation now. According to such environment change did request by cost time and cost-cutting until reach in production from product design because competition is gone vigorously. University arrived to think RP induction by result presentation and so on for third dimension model by various design process. This research purpose is going to compare difference methods(Manual processing, CNC machine) with students' design result manufacture process on RP appliance that is using in college. Consequently, think that this study is helpful in the college of which is making use of RP appliance or planning installation. By result of this research, model of big curved line is profitable in hand process, by CNC Is profitable when model is going to manufacture finely, RP work could know that size of product is profitable small thing as is complicated.

An Algorithm for Splitting a Box by a Loop and Its Applications in Manufacturing

  • During the design of dies and molds, the cavity of the object is obtained by subtracting it from a surrounding rectangular block. This box is subsequently split into two halves by the parting surface. Similar problems also occur in some RP processes such as LOM, SGC, SLS and 3DP where the machine produces a block inside which the prototype is buried. Determining the orientation of the object inside the box and the corresponding parting surface taking appropriate constraints into account have been addressed by several researchers. However, given the parting surface, the problem of splitting the box development of a software package called OptiLOM (now a module of an RP software Magics 8.0), the authors realized non-triviality of this problem since the loop can spread over as many as 5 faces of the box. In this paper, the authors have tried to bring out the importance of this problem and have presented their algorithm to solve it.

  • Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Are) welding is an actively growing area and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for welding applications is to study relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that enables the prediction of bead geometry using Rapid Prototyping(RP) in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. This system developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK, could be effectively implemented not only for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time.
