  • This article proposed polarization selective antenna for UHF RFID system. The proposed antenna is consist of microstrip patch antenna with dual feeding and two SPDT switches and a SP4T switch and 3dB hybrid coupler. Through control of voltage of switches, the proposed reader antenna can select horizontally linear polarization, vertically linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP). The proposed reader antenna satisfied 2:1 VSWR at 902MHz ~ 928MHz. and 3dB under AR(axial ratio). And it can select appropriative polarization with user environment and tag polarization. So it minimize PLF and increased reading distance.

  • In this paper, we suggested a new antenna structure for the RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) reader. The conventional RFID reader uses a loop antenna. The central area of a loop antenna shows a low magnetic field strength, especially for the case of a large loop antenna diameter. We proposed a parallel-fed multiple loop antenna. Simulation and measurement were carried out for a single loop antenna, series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas. Simulation results show that we can obtain 0.40A/m, 0.68A/m, 1.98A/m of magnetic field strengths at the central point of a reader antenna for a single loop antenna, series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas, respectively. We measured the $79mm{\time}48mm$ tag area averaged induced voltages with applying 20Vp-p same source signals to reader antennas through the resistors. Measured tag area averaged induced voltages at the central point of a reader antennas were 0.76V, 1.45V, 4.04V for a single loop antenna series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas, respectively. The results show that we can get high induced voltage which can grantee a longer reading distance with a proposed parallel-fed multiple loop antenna.

  • When there are many tags using the same frequency around the reader in RFID system, they disturb each other and in the end their response cannot be received by the reader. To solve this disturbance and fast identify the tags, the anti-collision algorithm, which is the core technology in RFID system, is needed. We propose two ALOHA-type Dynamic Framed Slotted ALOHA(DFS-ALOHA) algorithms using Dynamic Slot Allocation(DSA), which dynamically allocates the frame size in accordance with the number of tags and Tag Estimation Method(TEM), which estimates the number of tags around the reader. We also compare the performance of the proposed DFS-ALOHA algorithms with that of the conventional Framed Slotted ALOHA (FS-ALOHA) algorithms and the algorithms proposed by Vogt using OPNET simulation. According to the analysis, the two proposed DFS-ALOHA algorithms(DFS-ALOHA I and DFS-ALOHA II) show better performance than the conventional ALOHA-based algorithms regardless of the number of tags. Although the two proposed DFS-ALOHA algorithms show the similar performance, BFS-ALOHA ll is better because it is easier to be implemented in the system and the complexity is lower.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel tag collection algorithm to improve tag collection performance in active RFID systems. In the proposed algorithm, the reader detects the occurrence of empty slots and collided slots through the identified slot scan process and reduces the time wasted by empty slots and collided slots, resulting in improvement of tag collection performance. To evaluate the performance improvement by the proposed tag collection algorithm via the experiments in a real-world environment, we implemented an active RFID reader and tags. The experimental results with the reader and 60 tags showed that the proposed algorithm could reduce the average tag collection time by 21.7% and improve the average identification throughput by 28.3%, compared with the standard tag collection algorithm in ISO/IEC 18000-7. In addition, the proposed algorithm reduced the average battery consumption on tags by 22.7% in the battery consumption experiment with 20 tags.

  • RFID technology has evolved from basic operation like the acquisition of tag IDs into a more complicated operation such as the simultaneous acquisition of tag IDs and their positions and recently, is raising the possibility of obtaining additional informations, which include their velocities, directions and distances. In this paper, we present a RFID system that can fullfil aforementioned advanced functions. In the proposed system, a tag transmits a sequence of FMCW pulses modulated by ID signals and a reader separates the tag signals in azimuth direction using an array antenna, followed by the FMCW demodulation from which distances, velocities as well as the tag IDs are extracted. We propose a receiver structure of the reader and theoretically analyze its operability. Moreover, its performance is examined by simulation.

  • Recently arithmetic circuit of lightweight AES symmetric key algorithm that can apply to passive tag have been developed, then security protocol of RFID system using AES symmetric encryption techniques have been proposed. This paper proposed security enhancement protocol of RFID system using lightweight AES arithmetic circuit and random number generator of passive tag. The proposed protocol have AES algorithm and random number generator at server, reader, tag, and transmit encrypted message by separate secret key using random number at each session. The mutual authentication of tag and reader used reader random number and tag random number. As a result, proposal protocol reduce authentication steps of the existing mutual authentication protocol, and reduce amount of computation of tag, and demonstrate as secure protocol to every attack type of attacker by decrease communication step of Air Zone.

  • Reducing the energy that consumed by tag is a key requirement for the wider acceptance of the active RFID systems that use battery constrained tags. When the reader is not interrogating, the active RFID standard protocols try to reduce energy consumption of tags by using sleep mode. On sleep mode tags is active by receiving a specific signals from reader, until tag receive a sleep mode command from the reader, a tag waste energy for remaining in RX mode. Overhearing is a state of a tag in which it wastes energy for maintaining active RX state while there is no frame destined to it. According to our analysis, the amount of energy consumed by a tag due to overhearing is several time larger than that consumed by the effective communication. We propose RANO(Reservation Aloha for No Overhearing) that is designed to inform a tag of its effective communication intervals to eliminate overhearing problem in active RFID communication. The performance of the proposed protocol was evaluated through the real world by changing the number of tags and size of data. The result of an experiment, the proposed protocol performed saving about 22 times less than the standard protocol did.

  • This paper presents the RF Shower System for increased read range on low power mobile RFID System with 20watts of power supply. From the experiment, by controlling the output power of shower system, the tripled read range between reader and Tag is possibly discovered. Thus we can expect on the significantly widen read range of RFID system by appropriate control of Shower Zone, though we only with the reader with its lower output power level of 20dBm.

  • In 2010, Pedro et al. proposed RFID distance bounding protocol based on WSBC cryptographic puzzle. This paper points out that Pedro et al.'s protocol not only is vulnerable to tag privacy invasion attack and location tracking attack because an attacker can easily obtain the secret key(ID) of a legal tag from the intercepted messages between the reader and the tag, but also requires heavy computation by performing symmetric key operations of the resource limited passive tag and many communication rounds between the reader and the tag. Moreover, to resolve the security weakness and the computation/communication efficiency problems, this paper also present a new RFID distance bounding protocol based on WSBC cryptographic puzzle that can provide strong security and high efficiency. As a result, the proposed protocol not only provides computational and communicational efficiency because it requires secure one-way hash function for the passive tag and it reduces communication rounds, but also provides strong security because both tag and reader use secure one-way hash function to protect their exchanging messages.
