  • Covert Underwater Communication (CUC) signals should not be detected by other unintended users. Similar to the method used in Radio Frequency (RF), covert communication technique sending information underwater is designed in consideration of the characteristics of Low Probability of Detection (LPD) and Low Probability of Intercept (LPI). These conventional methods, however, are difficult to be used in the underwater communications because of the narrow frequency bandwidth. Unlike the conventional methods of reducing transmission power or increasing the modulation bandwidth, a method of mimicking the acoustic signal of an underwater mammal is being studied. The biomimetic underwater acoustic communication mainly mimics the click or whistle sound produced by dolphin or whale. This paper investigates biomimetic communication method and introduces research trends to understand the potential for the development of such biomimetic covert underwater acoustic communication and future research areas.

  • Recently, we are simultaneously exposed by various electromagnetic sources due to an increase of mobile communication services. However, EMF(Electric, Magnetic and Electromagnetic Field) study has been performed mainly about only single frequency. The objective of this paper is to develop an multiple-frequency exposure system for in vitro experiment. The exposure unit for in vitro experiments was designed by radial transmission line type to get broadband characteristics to generate signals of CDMA at 836.5 MHz and WCDMA at 1950 MHz frequency simultaneously. The modulated signals were delivered to the conical antenna through amplifier, digital attenuator and RF combiner. SAR values were obtained by the averaged values of 3 measured values at 9 points in petri dish using the fiber optic temperature probe. The measured return loss was under -15 dB. For 1 W input power, the mean value and standard deviation of SAR were $0.105{\pm}0.019$ for the CDMA frequency and $0.262{\pm}0.055$ for the WCDMA frequency.

  • A thin film optical waveguide sensor has been developed to measure and analyze quantitatively some inherent optical properties of biochemical substances. In this paper, two different kinds of thickness of thin film waveguide were prepared by RF sputtering of Corning-7059 glass(n = 1.588 at ${\lambda}=\;514nm$, Ar laser) on Pyrex glass substrates. We made a sensing membrane coated on the thin film waveguide with the poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) (91 : 3 : 6) copolymer membrane based on $H^{+}$-selective chromoionophore and $K^{+}$-selective neutral ionophore and then proposed the thin film opptical waveguide ion sensor which can select a potassium ion. This sensor based ell the absorbance change by utilizing chromoionophore and neutral ionophore, which changes their absorption spectrum in the UV-vis region upon complexation of the corresponding ionic species, have been reported. The sensitivity dependence of the proposed sensor on interaction length, waveguide thickness, and content of a chromoionophore was investigated. This sensor has the measurement range of $10^{-6}M{\sim}1M$ for $K^{+}$ concentration and 90% response time of duration within 1 min. Also, our thin film optical waveguide sensor using the evanescent field was investigated as compared with conventional transmission sensor or optode sensor by the optical fiber. The sensitivity of thin-film waveguide $K^{+}$ sensor is higher than that of the conventional transmission sensor. The proposed sensor is expected to be useful to biochemical, medical, environmental inspection and so on.

  • The Fabry-Perot interferometer filters for UV meter were designed using the design program of optical thin films. From the data obtained, two filters were fabricated. The transmittance of two filter were measured by spectrophotometer in order to analysis their optical property. The transmittance was controlled by the thickness of Ag reflector and the wavelength of the transmission was controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer. The two UV filters were fabricated by the RF magnetron sputtering which are the multilayers of [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|$SiO_2$(68 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|Cr(5 nm)|glass] and [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(S8 nm)|$SiO_2$(56 nm)|Ag(58 nm)|Cr(S nm)|glass]. One filter has the maximum transmittance of 6% at the about 370nm and it has the transmittance of below 0.2% at 400nm. The other filter can be found that the transmittance is increased as the thickness of Ag is decreased and the wavelength of the transmission is controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer layer.

  • All solid-state thin film micro supercapacitor, which consists of $RuO_2$/LiPON/$RuO_2$ multi layer structure, was fabricated on Pt/Ti/Si substrate using a $RuO_2$ electrode. Bottom $RuO_2$ electrode was grown by dc reactive sputtering system with increasing $O_2/[Ar+O_2]$ ratio at room temperature, and a LiPON electrolyte film was subsequently deposited on the bottom $RuO_2$ electrode at pure nitrogen ambient by rf reactive sputtering system. Room temperature charge-discharge measurements based on a symmetric $RuO_2$/LiPON/$RuO_2$ structure clearly demonstrates the cyclibility dependence on the microstructure of the $RuO_2$ electrode. Using both glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, it was found that the microstructure of the $RuO_2$ electrode was dependent on the oxygen flow ratio. In addition, x- ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) examination shows that the Ru-O binding energy is affected by increasing oxygen flow ratio. Furthermore, TEM and AES depth profile analysis after cycling demonstrates that the interface layer formed by interfacial reaction between LiPON and $RuO_2$ act as a main factor in the degradation of the cyclibility of the thin film micro-supercapacitor.

  • Recently, plastic optical fiber draws a lot of attention as a new transmission medium for local area network (LAN) and home network applications. As PMMA based GI-POF (Graded Index Plastic Optical Fiber) has very low loss at about 500 nm and 650 nm wavelengths, it is very important to have a compact ultra short optical pulse source at these wavelength windows. In this paper, we have investigated detailed characteristics of gain switched laser system by using a commercially available low cost RF devices and an InGaAlP Fabry Perot semiconductor laser operating at 650 nm wavelength. The shortest optical 'pulse obtained was 33 psec with 1 GHz repetition rate. Depending on the DC bias current and the modulation frequency, the FWHM and the pulse energy of the gain switched pulses show 33.3-82.8 psec and 0.97-9.69 pI respectively. Also, the spectral bandwidths for CW and gain switched operations are 0.44 nm and 1.50 nm. We believe that these results are quite useful for high bit rate optical transmission applications with PMMA based plastic optical fibers in addition to estimate properties of ultra fast optical components and electro-optic devices. vices.

  • In this study, iron oxide (FeOx) nanoparticles were synthesized using iron (Fe) by-products recovered from NdFeB permanent magnet scraps, and the effect of heat-treatment temperature on the physical properties of the FeOx nanoparticles was investigated. In order to prepare the FeOx nanoparticles, 2.0 M ammonia (NH4OH) solution was added to an iron by-product solution diluted to c.a. 10 wt% in D.I. water, which led to the precipitation of the iron oxide precursor. Then, the FeOx nanoparticles were synthesized by heat-treatment at 300 ℃, 400 ℃, 500 ℃ and 600 ℃. After that, the physical properties of the FeOx nanoparticles were investigated in order to understand the effect of the heat-treatment temperature. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the diffraction peak in accordance with the <104> direction increased as the heat-treatment increased, and a diffraction peak indicating the α-Fe2O3 crystal structure was detected at heat-treatment temperatures above 500 ℃. The BET specific surface area analysis revealed that the specific surface area decreased as the heat-treatment temperature increased to above 400 ℃. Observation with a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) showed that rod-shaped nanoparticles were formed, and the size of the nanoparticles showed a tendency to increase as the heat-treatment temperature increased.

  • Films consisting of a silicon quantum dot superlattice were fabricated by alternating deposition of silicon rich silicon nitride and $Si_3N_4$ layers using an rf magnetron co-sputtering system. In order to use the silicon quantum dot super lattice structure for third generation multi junction solar cell applications, it is important to control the dot size. Moreover, silicon quantum dots have to be in a regularly spaced array in the dielectric matrix material for in order to allow for effective carrier transport. In this study, therefore, we fabricated silicon quantum dot superlattice films under various conditions and investigated crystallization behavior of the silicon quantum dot super lattice structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra showed an increased intensity of the $840\;cm^{-1}$ peak with increasing annealing temperature due to the increase in the number of Si-N bonds. A more conspicuous characteristic of this process is the increased intensity of the $1100\;cm^{-1}$ peak. This peak was attributed to annealing induced reordering in the films that led to increased Si-$N_4$ bonding. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that peak position was shifted to higher bonding energy as silicon 2p bonding energy changed. This transition is related to the formation of silicon quantum dots. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis also confirmed the formation of silicon quantum dots. This study revealed that post annealing at $1100^{\circ}C$ for at least one hour is necessary to precipitate the silicon quantum dots in the $SiN_x$ matrix.

  • In this paper, we developed a broadband multi-layered radome applicable for high-power applications. In this regard, we presented the wave propagation characteristics of the broadband multi-layered radome with the ABCD matrix and obtained the optimal thickness and the material constant for each layer by an optimization algorithm called "particle swarm optimization," implemented by a commercial numerical modeling tool. Further, we redesigned it in view of mechanical properties to reflect environmental conditions such as wind, snow, and ice. The power transmission property was reanalyzed based on the recalculated data of each layer's thickness to consider the limitations of the fabrication of a large structure. Under the condition of a peak electric field strength that is 10 dB above the critical electric field strength in air breakdown, we analyzed the air breakdown by radio frequency(RF) in the designed radome using the commercial full-wave electromagnetic tool. The radome was manufactured and tested by continuous wave(CW) RF small signal and large signal in an anechoic chamber. The test results showed good agreement with those attained by simulation.

  • As the next generation of global satellite navigation system, the Galileo project is about to witness an initial orbit validation stage as the successful test of navigation message transmission from Giove-A in 2007. The Space Geodesy division ana the Radio Astronomy division of the Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute had collaborated on the field survey for the Galileo Sensor Station (GSS) RF environment of the proposed site near Jeju Tamla University from August 3rd to August 5th, 2006. The power spectrums were measured in full-band $(800{\sim}2000MHz)$ and in-band (E5, E6 and L1 band) in frequency domain for 24 hours respectively. Finally, we performed a time domain analysis to characterize strong in-band interference source based on the result of the previous step.
