  • Nitrogen-incorporated $SnO_2$ thin films were deposited by rf magnetron sputtering. Comparative structural, electrical and optical studies of thin films deposited by sputtering of the Sn metallic target and sputtering of the $SnO_2$ ceramic target were conducted. The $SnO_2$ thin films deposited by sputtering of the Sn metallic target had a higher electrical conductivity due to a higher carrier concentration than those by sputtering of the $SnO_2$ ceramic target. Structurally the $SnO_2$ thin films deposited by sputtering of the $SnO_2$ ceramic target had a better crystallinity and a larger grain size. This study confirmed that there were distinct and clear differences in electrical, structural, and optical characteristics between $SnO_2$ thin films deposited by reactive sputtering of the Sn metallic target and by direct sputtering of the $SnO_2$ ceramic target.

  • Crystalline carbon nitride films have been deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering system with negative DC bias. The carbon nitride films deposited on various substrates showed ${\alpha}$- C$_3$N$_4$,${\beta}$-C$_3$N$_4$ and lonsdaleite structures through XRD and FTIR We can find the grain growth of hexagonal structure from SEMI photographs, which is coincident with the theoretical carbon nitride unit cell. When nitrogen gas ratio is 70 % and RF power is 200 W, the growth rate of carbon nitride film on quartz substrate is about 2.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$/hr.

  • Zinc Oxide(ZnO) thin films on Si(100) substrate were deposited by RF magnetron reactive sputtering. The charcteristics of ZnO thin films on argon/oxygen(Ar/O$_2$)gas ratios RF power and substrate temperature were investigated by XRD, SEM, and AFM analyses. C-axis preferred orientation resistivity and surface roughness highly depended on Ar/O$_2$gas ratios. The resistivity of ZnO thin films rapidly increased with increasing oxygen ratio and the resistivity value of 9$\times$10$^{7}$ $\Omega$cm was obtained at a working pressure of 10 mTorr with Ar/O$_2$=50/50. The surface roughness was also improved with increasing oxygen ratio and the ZnO films deposited with Ar/O$_2$=50/50 showed the excellent roughness value of 28.7$\AA$.

  • The quaternary Ti-Al-V-N films have been grown on glass substrates by reactive dc and rf magnetron sputter deposition from a Ti-6Al-4V target in mixed Ar-$N_2$ discharges. The Ti-Al-V-N films were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), electron probe microanalysis(EPMA) and scratch tester. Both XRD and EPMA results indicated that the Ti-Al-V-N films were of single B1 NaCl phase having columnar structure with the (111) preferred orientation. Scratch tester results showed that the adhesion strength of Ti-Al-V-N films which treated with substrate heating and vacuum annealing was superior to that of as-deposited film. The good adhesion strength was also achieved in the double-layer structure of Ti-Al-V-N/Ti-Al-V/Glass.

  • Zirconium oxide thin films deposited on the p-type Si(100) substrates by radio-frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering with different plasma gas ratios have been studied by using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The deposition of the films was monitored by the oxygen gas ratio which has been increased from 0 to 80%. We found that the thickness and roughness of the zirconium oxide thin films are relatively constant. The XRD revealed that the deposited thin films have polycrystalline phases, Zr(101) and monoclinic $ZrO_2$ ($\bar{1}31$). The XPS result showed that the oxidation states of zirconium suboxides were changed to zirconia form with increasing $O_2$ gas ratio.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films have been deposited on Si substrate by using reactive RF magnetron sputtering method in a gas mixture of Ar and $N_2$ at different $N_2$ concentration. It was found that $N_2$ concentration was varied in the range up to 20-100%, highly c-axis oriented film can be obtained at 50% $N_2$ with full width at half maximum (FWHM) $4.5^{\circ}$. Decrease in surface roughness from 7.5 nm to 4.6 nm found to be associated with decrease in grain size, with $N_2$ concentration; however, the AlN film fabricated at 20% $N_2$ exhibited a granular type of structure with non-uniform grains. The absorption peak was observed around 675 $cm^{-1}$ in fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is concluded that the AlN film deposited at $N_2$ concentration of 50% exhibited the most desirable properties for the application of high-frequency surface acoustic devices.

  • Indium oxide $(In_2O_3)$ thin films have been prepared on glass substrate by using radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering with changing the oxygen flow ratio. The substrate temperature was kept at a fixed value of $400^{\circ}C$, and the sputtering gas and reactive gas were supplied with argon and oxygen, respectively. The oxygen partial flow ratio was varied by controlling the amount of oxygen with respect to the total mixed gases, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. The optical, electrical, and structural properties of the deposited thin films were investigated by using ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrophotometer, Hall measurement, and X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy. The $In_2O_3$ thin film deposited at 20% of oxygen flow ratio showed an average transmittance of 86% in the wavelength range of 430~1,100 nm, an electrical resistivity of $1.1{\times}10^{-1}{\Omega}cm$. The results show that the transparent conducting films with optimum conditions can be achieved by controlling the oxygen flow ratio.

  • The counter electrode widely used in DSCs (Dye-sensitized Solar Cells) is constructed of conducting glass substrates coated with Pt films, where the platium acts as a catalyst. Pt counter electrodes in DSCs are one important component. It is expected that characteristics of Pt electrodes strongly depend on fabrication process and its surface condition. In this study, Pt counter electrode surface of DSC is deposited by reactive RF magnetron sputtering under the conditions of Ar 5mtorr, RF power of 120w and substrate temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology of Pt electrodes was investigated by FE-SEM and AFM. And this paper shows our recent results and technology to fabricate the new designed cell with Pt electrodes deposited by sputtering method. We have achieved fill factor 65% and photoelectric conversion efficiency around 2.6% as the best results of new designed DSCs structure.

  • Copper oxide thin films were synthesized by reactive radio frequency magnetron sputtering at different oxygen gas ratios. The chemical and physical properties of the thin films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XPS results revealed that the dominant oxidation states of Cu were $Cu^0$ and $Cu^+$ at 0% oxygen ratio. When the oxygen ratios increased above 5%, Cu was oxidized as CuO as detected by X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy and the $Cu(OH)_2$ phase was confirmed independent of the oxygen ratio. The valence band maxima were $1.19{\pm}0.09$ eV and an increase in the density of states was confirmed after formation of CuO. The thickness and roughness of copper oxide thin films decreased with increasing oxygen ratio. The crystallinity of the copper oxide films changed from cubic Cu through cubic $Cu_2O$ to monoclinic CuO with mean crystallite sizes of 8.8 nm (Cu) and 16.9 nm (CuO) at the 10% oxygen ratio level.

  • The performance of ac plasma display panels (PDP) is influenced strongly by the surface glow discharge characteristics on the MgO thin films. This paper deals with the surface glow discharge characteristics and some physical properties of MgO thin films prepared by reactive RF planar unbalanced magnetron sputtering in connection with ac PDP. The samples prepared with the dc bias voltage of -10V showed lower discharge voltage and lower erosion rate by ion bombardment than those samples prepared by conventional magnetron sputtering or E-beam evaporation. The main factor that improves the discharge characteristics by bias voltage is considered to be due to the morphology changes or crystal structure of the MgO thin film by ion bombardment during deposition process.
