  • This paper presents the results of an analytical and experimental study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The main parameters of the experimental tests were amount of torsional reinforcement and the ratio of the transverse torsional reinforcement to the longitudinal torsional reinforcement. The test results indicated that the maximum amount of torsional reinforcement required in ACI 318-05 code underestimated almost twice as much as the observed maximum amount of torsional reinforcement. Comparisons between the tested and calculated torsional behaviors of the 102 beams showed that the torsional failure modes of ACI 318-05 code disagreed with the observed failure modes. In addition, the torsion provisions in ACI 318-05 code overestimate the torsional strength of the RC beams in which relatively large amount of torsional reinforcement were reinforced, while underestimate for the beams with small amount of torsional reinforcement. This discrepancy between the theoretical ultimate torsional strength as given by the ACI 318-05 code and the experimental one can be due to neglecting the tension stiffening effect and the contribution of the torsional strength by concrete.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate toxicities of 3 registered insecticides to greenhouse whitefly(GWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum and sweetpotato whitefly(SWF), Bemisia tabaci, B-biotype. Insecticide activities were evaluated by testing systemic action, residual effect in the laboratory, and control efficacy in the greenhouse. All experiments were tested at the recommended concentration(RC), half and a quarter concentrations of RC of each insecticides. Acetamiprid showed 45%, 42% ovicidal effect to greenhouse whitefly and sweetpotato whitefly at 40 ppm, respectively. Acetamiprid showed more than 97% larvicidal activities on the 3rd instars larvae of GWF and SWF at the recommended and its half concentrations. On the adults of the two whitefly species, acetamiprid and acetamiprid+ethofenprox showed more than 92% mortality even at half of recommended concentrations. Acetamiprid and acetamiprid+ethofenprox showed both residual effect and systemic activity. In the control efficacy test on GWF and SWF, 90% control values were obtained at the 3th day after treatments of acetamiprid and acetamiprid + ethofenprox by application with recommended concentration. These results indicate that acetamiprid and acetamiprid+ethofenprox can be used in the control of the two whitefly species in field.

  • The mechanical properties of a woven fabric made of SiC (silicon carbide) fibers were determined in this study using the KES-FB system. The woven fabric is used in high heat settings above 1500℃. Composite spun yarns were used to create SiC fibers. By analyzing the wearing properties, we studied the prospect of using the textiles as fire-retardant work clothes. Mechanical properties determine the wearing attributes. Therefore, the tensile linearity (LT), tensile resilience (RT), and shear stiffness (G) values of the fabric varied according to the yarn type (filament or spun yarn). The thickness, weight per square meter, and density of the fabric were found to have an effect on the shear hysteresis (2HG) and compression resilience (RC) values. In terms of wearable clothing qualities, the fabric qualities of the SiC composite yarn demonstrated the highest ratio of compressive energy to thickness (WC/T), which indicates bulkiness. The fabric manufactured from SiC composite yarns passed the KFI criteria for carbonation length and cumulative flame time in the flame-retardant test. Therefore, we discovered that the material can be used as a fire-resistant work cloth.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the stiffness reduction and damping ratio of reinforced concrete hollow slabs and to analyze their performance, and to study the effect of the damping effect of hollow bodies and the stiffness reduction on the serviceability of slabs. Method: Test specimen was made in a size of 0.6m*0.21m*3.6m to evaluate the vibration effect of the slab, and the hollow ratio was set in six steps from 0.0% to 30% to measure the change in rigidity and damping according to the change in the hollow ratio. Result: As the hollow ratio increases, rigidity decreases and the natural frequency decreases, but as the mass decreases, the natural frequency increases gradually. Since energy is hardly dissipated up to the hollow ratio of 20%, the hollow ratio should be reduced by 30%. Conclusion: It was found that the bending strength degradation of the slab with a hollow ratio of about 30% is minimized, but an appropriate natural frequency can be maintained, and a certain damping effect can be obtained.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams embedded with GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) plate with openings. In this study, the parameters include the shape of reinforcement, reinforcement area, and thickness and width of reinforcements. The test was performed on 9 specimens with shear spanto-depth ratio of 2.8. When the reinforcement area was varied, the GFRP plate showed 3.6 times greater shear strength than steel stirrup. The test result showed that shear strength increased as reinforcement area increased. Also, when the shape of a parallelogram GFRP plate was used, it showed higher shear strength than that with rectangular shape. Effect of thickness and width of reinforcement showed that shear capacity increased as width increased. For a comparison study, a calculation of the shear strength of reinforced beams with GFRP plate based on the ACI 318M-08 was compared with the test results. The test results were compared with the maximum shear reinforcement areas required by ACI 318M-08, CSA-04, and EC2-02 provision.

  • This paper is to determine the possibility of re-using waste concrete from Incheon city area. The strength test was conducted with five aggregate compounds which was replaced a natural aggregate with recycled aggregate. After checking the physical characteristics of recycled aggregate compounds, the mix design of recycled concrete was conducted. For the relatively comparison between natural and recycled compounds, while the unit aggregate weight was changed, other conditions were fixed. The freezing and thawing test which included fly-ash and super-plastezer were performed to check the durability and workability when recycling waste concrete. In the physical characteristics of recycled aggregate, it was found that the specific gravity of recycled coarse aggregate and recycled fine aggregate satisfied the first grade of recycle specification(KS), and all compounds of recycled aggregate also satisfied the second grade of absorption specification, Especially up to the 50% substitution of recycled aggregate is equal to or a bit lower than that of convention aggregate. In comparison with conventional concrete, the recycled concrete is lower than maximum by 7% in compressive strength decreasing rate after freezing-thawing test. From now, although most of recycled concrete was used to the building lot, subgrade, asphalt admixture, through the result. It was proved that possibility of re-using recycled aggregate as the substructure of bridge, retaining wall, tunnel lining and concrete structure which is not attacked the drying shrinkage severely.

  • PURPOSES : A composite pavement utilizes both an asphalt surface and a concrete base. Typically, a concrete base layer provides structural capacity, while an asphalt surface layer provides smoothness and riding quality. This pavement type can be used in conjunction with rollercompacted concrete (RCC) pavement as a base layer due to its fast construction, economic efficiency, and structural performance. However, the service life and functionality of composite pavement may be reduced due to interfacial bond failure. Therefore, adequate interfacial bonding between the asphalt surface and the concrete base is essential to achieving monolithic behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bond characteristics at the interface between asphalt (HMA; hot-mixed asphalt) and the RCC base. METHODS : This study was performed to determine the optimal type and application rate of tack coat material for RCC-base composite pavement. In addition, the core size effect, temperature condition, and bonding failure shape were analyzed to investigate the bonding characteristics at the interface between the RCC base and HMA surface. To evaluate the bond strength, a pull-off test was performed using different diameters of specimens such as 50 mm and 100 mm. Tack coat materials such as RSC-4 and BD-Coat were applied in amounts of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and $1.1l/m^2$ to determine the optimal application rate. In order to evaluate the bond strength characteristics with temperature changes, a pull-off test was carried out at -15, 0, 20, and $40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the bond failure shapes were analyzed using an image analysis program after the pull-off tests were completed. RESULTS : The test results indicated that the optimal application rate of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were $0.8l/m^2$, $0.9l/m^2$, respectively. The core size effect was determined to be negligible because the bond strengths were similar in specimens with diameters of 50 mm and 100 mm. The bond strengths of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were found to decrease significantly when the temperature increased. As a result of the bonding failure shape in low-temperature conditions such as -15, 0, and $20^{\circ}C$, it was found that most of the debonding occurred at the interface between the tack coat and RCC surface. On the other hand, the interface between the HMA and tack coat was weaker than that between the tack coat and RCC at a high temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : This study suggested an optimal application rate of tack coat materials to apply to RCC-base composite pavement. The bond strengths at high temperatures were significantly lower than the required bond (tensile) strength of 0.4 MPa. It was known that the temperature was a critical factor affecting the bond strength at the interface of the RCC-base composite pavement.

  • The qualitative factors influencing the ingress of chloride ion into concrete are water-binder (W/B) ratio, cement type, age, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. Thus, an objective of this experimental research is to investigate the effects of cement types and environmental conditions on the chloride ion diffusion characteristics in concrete through the chloride ion diffusion test. For this purpose, the diffusion coefficients for chloride ion in concrete with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC), were measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratios of 32%, 38%, and 43%, respectively. The diffusion coefficients for chloride ion were also measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratio of 43%, which were subjected to standard curing and field exposure conditions. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against chloride ion penetration increased with decreasing W/B ratio and those of BBC and TBC concretes were greater than that of OPC concrete. Therefore, it was revealed that the use of these cements containing mineral admixtures is required to extend the service life of RC structures exposed to chloride environment. On the other hand, it was noted that the resistance against chloride ion penetration of field exposure test specimens was slightly lower than that of standard curing test specimens due to the penetration of chloride ion under the irregular ambient temperature, splash of wave, and cycle of wet and dry.

  • Epimedium koreanum Nakai is a wild medicinal plant commonly consumed in South Korea due to its health beneficial effects. In the present study, the antioxidative, antimutagenic and immunological activities of E. koreanum Nakai extracts were investigated for their use in food. The yields of icariin compounds from the ethanol extract as well as the ethyl acetate, butanol, hexane, water, and chloroform fractions of E. koreanum were 27.9, 2.5, 1.7, 1.4, and 1.3 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively. The icariin components (295.5 ${\mu}g/g$) were collected from the ethyl acetate fraction by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and analyzed via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The antioxidant activities of each fraction were as follows: ethyl acetate (49.0 ${\mu}g/mL$), butanol (59.2 ${\mu}g/mL$), hexane (119.8 ${\mu}g/mL$), water (122.0 ${\mu}g/mL$), and chloroform (138.5 ${\mu}g/mL$), based on $RC_{50}$ ${\mu}g/mL$. Icariin, isolated and identified as the main component, showed strong antioxidant activity with a $RC_{50}$ value of 15.3 ${\mu}g/mL$, which was higher than those of ascorbic acid (19.5 ${\mu}g/mL$) and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol (18.2 ${\mu}g/mL$). In an Ames test, none of the fractions produced mutagenic effects on Salmonella Typhimurium TA98 and TA100. In an immunomodulating activity test, the effects of E. koreanum Nakai on B cells (Rhamos) and T cells (Jurkat) were investigated. These results show that the growth and viability of B and T cells were increased by isolated icariin components for 1.27 and 1.28 fold, respectively. These results also provide preliminary data for the development of E. koreanum Nakai as an edible food material.

  • The objective of the study are two-fold: one is to explore the relationship between environment, organizational structure, and organizational effectiveness of public health centers in Korea, and the other is to examine the validity of contingency theory for improving the organizational structure of public health care agencies, with special emphasis on public health nursing administration. Accordingly, the conceptual model of the study consisted of three different concepts: environment, organizational structure, and organizational effectiveness, which were built up from the contingency theory. Data were collected during the period from 1st of May through 30th of June, 1990. From the total of 249 health centers in the country, one hundred and five centers were sampled non proportionally, according to the geopolitical distribution. Out of 105, 73 health centers responded to mailed questionnaire. The health centers were the unit of the study, and a various statistical analysis techniques were used: Reliability analysis(Cronbach's Alpha) for 4 measurement tools; Shapiro-Wilk statistic for normality test of measured scores of 6 variables: ANOVA, Pearson Correlaion analysis, regressional analysis, and canonical correlation analysis for the test of the relationships and differences between the variables. The results were. as follows : 1. No significant differences between forma lization, decision-making authority and environmental complexity were found(F=1.383, P=.24 ; F=.801, P=.37). 2. Negative relationships between formalization and decision-making authority for both urban and rural health centers were found(r=-.470, P=.002 ; r=-.348, P=.46). 3. No significant relationship between formalization and job satisfaction for both urban and rural health centers were found (r=-.242, P=.132, r=-.060, P=.739). 4. Significant positive relationship between decision - making authority and job satisfaction were found in urban health centers (r=.504, P=.0009), but no such relationship was observed in rural health centers. Regression coefficient between them was statistically significant($\beta=1.535$, P=.0002), and accuracy of regression line was accepted (W=.975, P= .420). 5. No significant relationships among formalization and family planning services, maternal health services, and tuberculosis control services for both urban and rural health centers were found. 6. Among decision-making authority and family planning services, maternal health services, and tuberculosis control services, significant positive relationship was found between de cision-making authority and family planning services(r=.286, P=.73). 7. A significant difference was found in maternal health services by the type of health centers (F=5.13, P=.026) but no difference was found in tuberculosis control services by the type of health centers, formalization, and decision-making authority. 8. A significant positive relationships were found between family planning services and maternal health services and tuberculosis control services, and between maternal health services and tuberculosis control services (r=-.499, P=.001 ; r=.457, P=.004 ; r=.495, P=.002) in case of urban health centers. In case of rural health centers, relationships between family planning services and tuberculosis control services, and between maternal health services and tuberculosis control services were statistically significant (r=.534, P=.002 ; r=.389, P=.027). No significant relationship was found between family planning and maternal health services. 9. A significant positive canonical correlation was found between the group of independent variables consisted of formalization and de cision-making authority and the group of dependent variables consisted of family planning services, maternal health services and tuberculosis control services(Rc=.455, P=.02). In case of urban health centers, no significant canonical correlation was found between them, but significant canoncial correlation was found in rural health centers(Rc=.578, P=.069), 10. Relationships between job satisfaction and health care productivity was not found significant. Through these results, the assumed relationship between environment and organizational structure was not supported in health centers. Therefore, the relationship between the organizational effectiveness and the congruence between environment and organizational structure that contingency theory proposes to exist was not able to be tested. However decision-making authority was found as an important variable of organizational structure affecting family planning services and job satisfaction in urban health centers. Thus it was suggested that decentralized decision making among health professionals would be a valuable strategy for improvement of organizational effectiveness in public health centers. It is also recommended that further studies to test contingency theory would use variability and uncertainty to define environment of public health centers instead of complexity.
