  • Since improved capacity for RC bridges has been required due to deterioration or increase in traffic, the deflection of cracked reinforced concrete slabs need to be reconsidered. Strengthening is known as the better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. In this paper, Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was introduced as one of the best strengthening methods for civil structures. The structures strengthened with FRPs can improve the strengthening capacity and serviceability. Therefore, CFRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used for strengthening slabs of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the effect of the strengthening and effective flexural rigidity.

  • In this study, the performance evaluation of the RC frame specimen (RV2) which was strengthened by a steel frame and a steel damper with the lateral deformation prevention details proceeded. The comparison objects are bare frame specimen (BF), RV2 and AWD, where AWD is a specimen reinforced with steel damper and aramid fiber sheets. In the evaluation of envelope curve, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation capacity, RV2 was evaluated to have excellent capacity as a whole. To evaluate the strengthening effect of the steel frame based on the maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity, it was evaluated to have a 38% of the RV2's capacity.

  • The adhesion performance of PCCs for crack repair of RC structures was greater in the case of using ultra high-early strength cement than in the case of using ordinary Portland cement, and the effect of mixing silica fume was higher in the case of ordinary Portland cement than that of ultra high-early strength cement. On the other hand, 130% of W/C was more fluid than 80% of W/C in the same P/C 80%, which increased the fillability and improved the strength, but the strength improvement effect was the greatest in adhesion in flexure. Through this study, the basic characteristics of the adhesion performance of PCCs were identified, and based on this, it is necessary to induce an optimal mixing design that can increase adhesion performance through various mixing designs.

  • Different methods have been proposed in the literature for splicing the reinforcing bars in the construction of concrete structures, which are alternatively used depending on design requirements. The most common approach is the lap splicing which is known as a cost-effective method although, its main disadvantages including congestion of bars at the lap zone and consequently, material wastage has motivated utilization of the other techniques such as mechanical splices (couplers). To better evaluate the performance of the couplers, 6 reinforced concrete (RC) beams whose difference is only the type and location of splices have been experimentally studied in this paper. Based on the results, the mechanical connection of the bars did not markedly affect the load-carrying capacity of the specimens. Moreover, it was observed that after applying the loads and failure of the specimens, none of the bars ruptured at the splice location and all couplers remained undamaged.

  • With the aim to provide better predication about fracture behavior, a numerical simulating strategy based on the rigid spring model is proposed for reinforced concrete (RC) structures in this study. According to the proposed strategy, concrete is partitioned into a series of irregular rigid blocks based on the Voronoi diagram, which are connected by interface springs. Steel bars are simulated by bar elements, and the bond slip element is defined at bar element nodes to describe the interaction between reinforcement and concrete. A concrete damage evolution model based on the separation criterion is adopted to describe the weakening process of interface spring between adjacent blocks, while a nonlinear bond slip model is introduced to simulate the synergy behaviour of reinforced steel bars and concrete. In the damage evolution model of concrete, the influence of compressive stress perpendicular to the interface on the shear strength is considered. To check the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed modelling, experimental and numerical studies about a simply-supported RC beam and the two-notched concrete plates in Nooru-Mohamed's experiment are conducted, and the grid sensitivity are investigated.

  • In the current study, punching behavior of Reinforced concrete (RC) isolated footings was experimentally and numerically investigated. The experimental program consisted of four half-scale RC isolated footing specimens. The test matrix was proposed to show effect of footing area, reinforcement mesh ratio, adding internal longitudinal reinforcement bars and stirrups on the punching response of RC isolated footings. Footings area varied from 1200×1200 mm2 to 1500×1500 mm2 while the mesh reinforcement ratio was in the range from 0.36 to 0.45%. On the other hand, a 3D non-linear finite element model was constructed using ABAQUS/standard program and verified against the experimental program. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental records. The validated numerical model was used to study effect of concrete compressive strength; longitudinal reinforcement bars ratio and stirrups concentration along one or two directions on the ultimate load, deflection, stiffness and failure patterns of RC isolated footings. Results concluded that adding longitudinal reinforcement bars did not significantly affect the punching response of RC isolated footings even high steel ratios were used. On the contrary, as the stirrups ratio increased, the ultimate load of RC isolated footings increased. Footing with stirrups ratio of 1.5% had ultimate load equal to 1331 kN, 19.6% higher than the bare footing. Moreover, adding stirrups along two directions with lower ratio (0.5 and 0.7%) significantly enhanced the ultimate load of RC isolated footings compared to their counterparts with higher stirrups ratio (1.0 and 1.5%).

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) composites are widely applied to strengthen deteriorated concrete structures. This paper presents the experimental results of the performance of reinforced concrete(RC) beams strengthened with externally prestressed CFRP plates. Simple beams with 3 m span length were tested to investigate the effect of prestressing force of CFRP plates on the flexural behavior of externally strengthened RC beams.

  • Since many structures in the sea environment are damaged by chloride, appropriate repair strategy is required. Therefore in the paper, optimum period for the RC structure's repair is calculated with consideration of economic efficiency. Moreover, when the concrete members are repaired with the other material such as polymer mortar forr section restoration, their expected service life also calculated to predict more accurate repair period during the life span.

  • Fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete(RC) elements has been experimentally and analytical investigated. Fatigue behavior is influenced by a longitudinal reinforcement ratio, strength of concrete and a load ratio Pu/Po. The purpose of this study to propose an empirical formula for the fatigue behavior on the basis of experimental results. Also an analytical method to predict the crack propagation of RC beams has been developed based on the relationships between bond stress and slip.
