The current study investigates the seismic performance of shear-dominant RC columns retrofitted with iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe SMA). Three RC columns with insufficient transverse reinforcement were designed and fabricated for lateral cyclic loading tests. Before testing, two specimens were externally confined with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and self-prestressed Fe SMA strips. The test results showed that both CFRP and Fe SMA performed well in preventing severe shear failure exhibited by the unretrofitted control specimen. Furthermore, the two retrofitted specimens showed ductile flexural responses up to the drift ratios of ±8%. In terms of damage control, however, the Fe SMA confinement was superior to CFRP confinement in that the spalling of concrete was much less and that the rupture of confinement did not occur.

In this paper, the comparative performance of repaired RC columns using steel and CFRP is presented. Also, the effect of transverse reinforcement ratio on the behavior of the steel and the CFRP repairing is investigated. Monotonic and cyclic load tests are conducted on nine RC column specimens with different repairing strategies and transverse reinforcement ratios to compare the load-displacement curves and the hysteretic behaviors. From the tests, it is observed that both steel and CFRP jacket repairings can significantly increase the displacement ductility and the ultimate load capacity of damaged columns.

In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

A RC column-bent pier represents one of the most popular piers used in highway bridges. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent-piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400mm diameter and 2,000mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with the axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Three specimens were subjected to bidirectional lateral load cycles which consisted of two main longitudinal loads and two sub transverse loads in one load cycle. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter three specimens were generally bigger than those of the former three specimens. Plastic hinges were formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom plastic hinge of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

The focus of this paper is the study on the seismic performance of RC buildings with two different connections at the base level under near-fault earthquakes. It is well-known that the impulsive nature of the near-fault ground motions causes severe damages to framed buildings especially at base connections. In the scope of this study, two types of 3-dimensional RC Moment Frames with Fixed Support (MFFS) and Hinged Support (MFHS) containing 5 and 10 stories are assessed under an ensemble of 11 strong ground motions by implementing nonlinear response history analysis. The most vulnerable locations of MFFS, are the connections of corner columns to foundation especially under strong earthquakes. On the other hand, using beams at the base level as well as hinged base connections in MFHS buildings, prevents damages of corner columns and achieves more ductile behavior. Results denote that the MFHS including Base Level Beams (BLB) significantly shows better behavior compared with MFFS, particularly under pulse-type records. Additionally, the first story beams and also interior components undergo more actions. Role of the BLBs are similar to fuses decreasing the flexural moments of the corner columns. The BLBs can be constructed as replaceable members which provide the reparability of structures.
Reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be strengthened by direct fastening of steel plates around a column, forming composite actions. This method can increase both the total load bearing area and the concrete confinement stress. To predict the axial load resistance of strengthened RC columns, the equivalent passive confinement stress of the stirrups and the steel jacket should be accurately quantified, which requires the stress in the stirrups and shear force in the connections to be first obtained. In this paper, parameters, i.e., the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors are utilized to quantify the stress of the stirrups and shear force in the connections. A mechanical model for determining the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors is proposed and validated using the experimental results in a previous study. The model is found to be robust. Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted and the optimum stress ratios of the stirrups and the optimum shear force ratios of connectors are proposed for engineering designs.
Present paper deals with the cost effective design of reinforced concrete building frame employing unified particle swarm optimization (UPSO). A building frame with G+8 stories have been adopted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present algorithm. Effect of seismic loads and wind load have been considered as per Indian Standard (IS) 1893 (Part-I) and IS 875 (Part-III) respectively. Analysis of the frame has been carried out in STAAD Pro software. The design loads for all the beams and columns obtained from STAAD Pro have been given as input of the optimization algorithm. Next, cost optimization of all beams and columns have been carried out in MATLAB environment using UPSO, considering the safety and serviceability criteria mentioned in IS 456. Cost of formwork, concrete and reinforcement have been considered to calculate the total cost. Reinforcement of beams and columns has been calculated with consideration for curtailment and feasibility of laying the reinforcement bars during actual construction. The numerical analysis ensures the accuracy of the developed algorithm in providing the cost optimized design of RC building frame considering safety, serviceability and constructional feasibilities. Further, Monte Carlo simulations performed on the numerical results, proved the consistency and robustness of the developed algorithm. Thus, the present algorithm is capable of giving a cost effective design of RC building frame, which can be adopted directly in construction site without making any changes.

Recently, with frequent earthquakes around the world, research on seismic design and seismic reinforcement of reinforced concrete facilities has been actively conducted from earthquakes. In particular, columns, which are compressed members of reinforced concrete structures, are vulnerable to lateral forces caused by earthquakes, so an appropriate seismic reinforcement method is required. Therefore, this study intended to develop Velcro seismic reinforcement method that is quick and easy to construct. For the development of Velcro seismic reinforcement, the adhesion and tensile strength of the existing industrial velcro was improved. A direct tensile test was also conducted to compare the tensile performance of the newly-developed velcro seismic reinforcement to industrial one. In addition, numerical analysis was performed to predict the seismic performance of RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro. Based on the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the non-seismic and velcro-reinforced RC column were reviewed. The analysis confirmed that both the strength and ductility of non-seismic RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro increased, but the seismic performance of the newly-developed Velcro reinforcement is better than that of industrial velcro.
Stress determination is a very important step in the assessment of the safety of existing reinforced concrete structures. In rock mechanic this goal is achieved with the over-coring technique. The main idea behind such a technique is to isolate a material sample from the stress field in the surrounding mass and monitor its re-equilibrium deformation response. If the materials remains elastic, and elastic properties are known, stresses may be obtained from the corresponding measured strains. The goal of this paper is to evaluate if the over-coring technique is applicable to reinforced concrete members. The results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of compressed concrete columns subjected to the over-coring technique are presented. Considerations about the range of applicability of the technique are made by comparing the measured and the theoretical stresses. After that, results of failure tests on drilled specimens are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the response is compared with that of columns core-bored before the compressive test. Finally, comparisons with numerical analysis are shown.

Experimental investigation was conducted into the flexure/shear-critical behavior of earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete columns with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region. Six test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2,5 were made with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes of which magnitude could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P=$0.1f_{ck}A_g. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that RC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels in the plastic hinge region appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility, and strain energy ductility.
