To investigate the cyclic characteristics of exterior joints in RC frame buildings which are typically used after 1988, 70% scaled T-shaped beam-column subassemblies were designed and tested with a displacement control that is composed of 9 steps, until 3.5% story drift was reached. Axial forces are applied to columns during the experiment to simulate a real situation. The results show that the non-seismic detailed specimens failed before reaching 0.85% story drift, and their strengths are less than 0.85 times the nominal flexural strength which beam or columns should reach. The relationship of principal stress and story drift of exterior joints is similar to the one that Priestly proposed.

In this study, a shear experiment was conducted to evaluate the structural performance of RC members according to the shape of web opening reinforcement. For a total of 4 RC members specimens, the main variables were with or without web openings, with or without web opening reinforcement, and shape of web opening reinforcement, respectively. In this study, a spiral web opening reinforcement with a mixture of square and octagonal shapes was proposed and compared with the existing band type. As a result of the experiment, the specimen with the proposed web opening reinforcement showed that the shear capacity and the energy dissipation capacity increased compared to other specimens. It was confirmed that the web opening reinforcement proposed in this study had a positive effect on the shear performance and crack control of RC members with web openings.

Concrete is inherently a good fire-resistance material among all other constrcution materials and protects the reinforcing steel inside. This study investigates the material characteristics of concrete and steel bar inside the full scale reinforced concrete(RC) beam exposed to fire test. The fire test specimen was 4 m long and the test was conducted under no loading condition following KS F 2257. Fire source is simulated by ISO 834 and number of thermocouples were installed to measure temperature variation of surfaces and inside of the beam. The measured compressive strength of cored specimen, which was exposed to fire test, was 11 MPa, about 66% lower than the strength before exposure. The yielding strength of steel bar also decreased about 75 MPa, about 17% lower. The measured temperature of protected steel bar was around $649^{\circ}C$, the critical limit, after 4 hour exposure.

The long-term flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with an iron based-shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) by a near-surface mounted (NSM) method was evaluated. The pre-strained values of 2% and 4% and introduced prestressing force by an activation of a shape memory effect of the Fe-SMA strengthening material were considered as experimental variables. Deflections at the center of the RC beams were measured for six months after the 1 tonf concrete weight was loaded on the beam. Experimental results show that the deflections decreased because of the increased flexural stiffness of beams strengthened with the Fe-SMA strips. On the contrary, with increased pre-strained values, the deflection increased due to stiffness reduction of the strengthening material. It was confirmed that the specimens incorporating the prestressed force showed the deflection reduction of about 30%, compared to the ones without the prestressed force.

As building structures are becoming high-rise, large-scale, and specialized, the use of high-strength materials increase. Therefore, an analytical model is necessary to appropriately predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with high-strength materials. This study presents a truss model which is able to reasonably predict the shear strength of the RC beams having high-strength steel bars. Test results of 107 RC beams reported in the technical literatures were collected to check the validity of proposed model, TATM, for the shear strength of the RC beams with high-strength reinforcing bars. They were compared to theoretical results obtained from proposed model, TATM, and existing truss models. The experimental results were better predicted by TATM rather than other truss models, and the ratios of experimental results to theoretical results obtained from TATM were almost constant regardless of the yield strengths of tension and shear reinforcements.

To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams(4 NU-beams without U-shaped band and 4 U-beams with U-shaped band) are tested. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets and the existence of U-shaped band, etc. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without U-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. The experimental results are compared with the analytical results of nonlinear flexural behaviors for strengthened RC beam. The proposed analytical method for strengthened beams is proved to be accurate by an experimental investigation of load-deflection curve, yield load, maximum load, and flexural rigidities in the pre- and post-yielding stages.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the shear behavior of RC beams strengthened with channel-type Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) plates. Fourteen RC beams were specifically designed. All the beams were tested under four point bending and extensively instrumented to monitor strains, cracking, load capacity and failure modes. The structural response of all beams is then critically analyzed in terms of deformability, strength and failure processes. It is shown that with channel-type Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) plates, a brittle debonding failure of beams bonding FRP in the concrete surface can be transformed to an almost ductile failure with well-defined enhancement of structural performance in terms of both deformation and strength.
This paper outlines a new strengthening technique for concrete beams using externally unbended high-strength bars. The advantages of proposed method lie in speed and simplicity of construction compared to the alternative strengthening method. Externally unbended reinforcement retains many of the advantages over external unbended prestressed tendons. It eliminates time consuming stressing operations. Clearance requirements around anchorages are reduced as access is not required for prestressing jacks. Test results of eight specimens on reinforced concrete beams using different reinforcement materials such as carbon fiber sheet, steel plate and high-tension bar are reported. The beam strengthened by carbon fiber sheet showed a brittle failure mode due to the separation of fiber. As a result of draped profile of external bar, the maximum strength of the beam were increased by up to 212 percent and the deflections were reduced by up to 65 percent. Test results show that the beams reinforced with high-tension bar are superior to reference specimens, especially for the strength and deformation capacity.

In this study, details of NRC beam-column connections were developed in which beam and columns pre-assembled in factories using steel angles were bolted on site. The developed joint details are NRC-J type and NRC-JD type. NRC-J type is a method of tensile joining with TS bolts to the side and lower surfaces of the side plate of the NRC column and the end plate of the NRC beam. NRC-JD type has a rigid joint with high-strength bolts between the NRC beam and the side of the NRC column for shear, and with lap splices of reinforcing bar penetrating the joint and the beam main reinforcement for bending. For the seismic performance evaluation of the joint, three specimens were tested: an NRC-J specimen and NRC-JD specimen with NRC beam-column joint details, and an RC-J specimen with RC beam-column joint detail. As a result of the repeated lateral load test, the final failure mode of all specimens was the bending fracture of the beam at the beam-column interface. Compared to the RC-J specimen, the maximum strength of the specimen by the positive force was 10.1% and 29.6% higher in the NRC-J specimen and the NRC-JD specimen, respectively. Both NRC joint details were evaluated to secure ductility of 0.03 rad or more, the minimum total inter-story displacement angle required for the composite intermediate moment frame according to the KDS standard (KDS 41 31 00). At the slope by relative storey displacemet of 5.7%, the NRC-J specimen and the NRC-JD specimen had about 34.8% and 61.1% greater cumulative energy dissipation capacity than the RC specimen. The experimental strength of the NRC beam-column connection was evaluated to be 30% to 53% greater than the theoretical strength according to the KDS standard formula, and the standard formula evaluated the joint performance as a safety side.

Generally, poly-urea is widely used as waterproof coating material due to its superior adhesiveness, elongation capacity, and permeability resistance. In addition, it can be quickly and easily applied on structure surfaces using spray application. Since it hardens in about 30 seconds after application, its construction efficiency is very high and its usage as a special functional material is also excellent. However, currently, poly-urea is mostly used as waterproof coating material and the researches on its usage as a retrofitting material is lacking at best. Therefore, basic studies on the use of poly-urea as a general structural retrofitting material are needed urgently. The objective of this study is to develop most optimum poly-urea composition for structure retrofitting purpose. Moreover, the structural strengthening capacity of the developed poly-urea is evaluated through flexural capacity experiments on RC beams and RC slabs. From the results of the flexural test of poly-urea strengthened RC beam and slab specimens, the poly-urea and concrete specimen showed monolithic behavior where ductility and ultimate strength of the poly-urea strengthened specimen showed slight increase. However, the doubly reinforced specimens with FRP sheet and poly-urea showed lower capacity than that of the specimen reinforced only with FRP sheet.
