  • Dynamic shear properties of Nak-Dong river sand were investigated to build a soil property database for Nak-Dong delta region. Samples were taken from the estuary and the midstream of the river. Laboratory specimens were prepared by air pluviation method, and were tested by using RC/TS apparatus at various confining stresses, relative densities and numbers of cycles. Shear modulus reduction and damping curves were developed using Ramberg-Osgood and Modified Hyperbolic Models. The developed curves, compared to those reported by other investigators, show only a slight difference. The outcome of this RC/TS experiments can be very important resources when accessing the dynamic response of sandy soils in Nak-Dong delta region in the future.

  • A model for the nonlinear flexural analysis of extruded Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) panel reinforced concrete (RC) composite slab has been newly presented. From direct tensile test, ECC panel has been modeled to have the high-ductile tensile behavior after cracking. The developed model was compared with bending test results of two specimens, a conventional RC slab and a ECC panel RC composite slab. The predicted results were well patched with the experimental results, and the ECC panel RC composite slab system had advantages in crack control and improving flexural load-carrying capacity and deformation-capacity.

  • Recently, nine $1397{\times}1397{\times}178mm$ RC panels were tested under in-plane pure-shear monotonic loading condition using the Panel Element Tester by Hsu (1997, ACI). By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, Modern Truss Model (MCFT, RA-STM) are capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of RC membrane panel through the complicated trial-and-error method with double loop. In this paper, an efficient algorithm with one loop is proposed for the refined Mohr compatibility Method based on the strut-tie failure criteria. This algorithm can be speedy calculated to analyze the shear history of RC membrane element using the results of Hsu test. The results indicate that the response of shear deformation energy at Big Bang of shear strain significantly influenced by the principal compressive stress-strain (crushing failure).

  • Several theoretical soil nonlinear models to predict damping ratio, which is one of the typical dynamic properties of soils, it is impractical to predict damping ratio. The resonant column and torsional shear test(RC-TS) is used to represent the dynamic behavior of soils from intermediate to medium shear strains. A limitation of RC-TS is measure precise shear strain in large strains and the modified equivalent radius($R_{eq}$) was obtained using both modified hyperbolic model and Ramberg-Osgood model. Bonneville clays were tested using RC-TS test to obtain rotation and torque. The measured rotation and torque were then compared with calculated rotation and torque using curve-fitting method. Then, the nonlinear soil model parameters were obtained and the equivalent radius was calculated using the model parameters.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical research results to predict nonlinear flexural behavior of corroded reinforced concrete beams. For this purpose, a series of test and an analytical simulation using the Maaddawy's model were carried. Test specimens of total 12 RC beams were placed in accelerated corrosion status using salt water spray test chamber for 5 months and 10 months, after they were preloaded up to 30% and 60% of the maximum load corresponding to nominal flexural strength. The test results showed that flexural strength and ductility decreased to 5.4% and 43% at the most respectively due to breakdown of bond at the steel-concrete interface. Comparative study between the analytical predictions and the experimental results showed that the Maaddawy's model can be applied to predict a real corroded RC flexural members.

  • This study investigates influencing factors on numerical crash simulation between RC slab and soft projectile using explicit dynamic method. Considered experimental test is the MEPPEN II/4 test, which has been conducted at the end of the years 70' in Germany as one of the numerous experimental test related to design of nuclear power plants. LS-DYNA software is adopted for numerical study, and influencing factors such as constitutive model of concrete, strain rate effect of steel and concrete, support modeling method, etc. are investigated. More reasonable simulation results can be achieved through appropriate consideration of these factors, especially of constitutive model of concrete material since this factor affects most among the investigated factors.

  • This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.

  • This study presents test results of RC beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet(CFS), carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) or glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) for increasing shear resistance. Nineteen specimens were tested, and the test was performed with different parameters including the type of strengthening materials(CFS, GFRP, CFRP), shear-strengthening methods(wing type, jacket type, strip type), strip-spacing, strengthening direction of FRP. The test results show that shear-damaged RC beams strengthened by FRP(CFS, GFRP, CFRP) have more improved the shear capacity. The mathematical model based on plastic theory was also developed to predict shear strength of shear-damaged RC beams strengthened by FRP. The predictions using the mathematical model. are agreed with the observations from the observed shear strengths for 19 test beams.

  • This paper describes the extension of the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to monotonic in plane shear and introduced in the companion paper, to simulate effectively the behavior of RE structures under cyclic loadings. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress strain relation of concrete, which across the tension compression region, is defined. In addition, unlike previous simplified stress strain relations, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect we used. The modifications of the stress strain relation of steel are also introduced to reflect pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
