  • Chronic invasive aspergillosis is a life-threatening disease, especially in immunocompromised patients. The diagnosis and treatment of tracheal aspergillosis (TA) are challenging because of its rarity and nonspecific clinical presentations. The treatment standard of TA has been medical treatment like other forms of invasive aspergillosis, but patients with medically resistant TA require surgical intervention. We demonstrated a successful surgical outcome of chronic invasive TA in a 16-year-old patient with immunocompromised status related to acute myelocytic leukemia.

  • In this study, the city of Osijek is used as a case study area for low to medium seismicity regions with deep soil over deep geological deposits to determine horizontal PGA values. For this reason, we propose new regional attenuation equations for PGA that can simultaneously capture the effects of deep geology and local soil conditions. A micro-zoning map for the city of Osijek is constructed using the derived empirical scaling equations and compared to all prior seismic hazard estimates for the same area. The findings suggest that the deep soil atop deep geological sediments results in PGA values that are only 6 percent larger than those reported at rock soil sites atop geological rocks. Given the rarity of ground motion records for deep soils atop deep geological layers around the world, we believe this case study is a start toward defining more reliable PGA estimates for similar areas.

  • Pulmonary malakoplakia is a rare lung lesion more frequently found in immunocompromised patients than in immunocompetent individuals. In this study, we report the challenging case of a young immunocompetent patient with an irregular pulmonary nodule with peripheral cysts who, after undergoing surgery, was diagnosed with malakoplakia. Due to the rarity of the disease and the similarity of this condition to malignant neoplasms, cytopathological or histopathological examinations are necessary for the correct diagnosis. A description of pulmonary malakoplakia with peripheral cysts has not been previously published in the literature.

  • Littoral cell angiomas are rare vascular tumors of the spleen. Because of their rarity, unclear etiopathogenesis, and association with other malignancies, these tumors can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Due to paucity of published literature on this entity often limited to case reports, relevant data on this topic were procured and synthesized with the aid of a comprehensive Medline search in addition to oncologic, pathologic, radiologic, and surgical literature review on littoral cell angiomas. This article provides an in-depth review into postulated etiopathogenesis, pathology, clinical manifestations, associated malignancies, and prognostic features of littoral cell angiomas.

  • Retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy. Owing to its rarity and nonspecific symptoms, diagnosing retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy at the initial presentation poses a significant challenge. Typically, the diagnosis relies on non-radiation imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography and MRI, whereas CT is infrequently used. Herein, we report a rare case of a retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy, which was diagnosed using CT.

  • The Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) is a flow-diverting intraluminal device that is approved for use in adults 18 years or older with internal carotid artery aneurysms. However, it can also be used off-label in pediatric patients with aneurysms that cannot be resolved with traditional endovascular treatments. Herein, we present two cases of flow diversion in the pediatric population with complete obliteration of the aneurysm and excellent outcomes. Flow diversion has been shown to be a safe endovascular option in treating complex aneurysms in children. Larger-sized, multicenter trials are encouraged to compare outcomes between flow diversion and other aneurysm treatment options given the rarity of pediatric aneurysms.

  • For conservation of biodiversity, we designate and manage the major areas that are habitats of organisms as ecosystem protected areas. It is necessary to evaluate the biodiversity of protected areas relatively in order to establish strategies to protect and secure the biodiversity of protected areas. In this study, we selected evaluation indicators by which we can compare objectively the biodiversity of protected areas corresponding to forest ecosystem, and applied them to Mt. Jiri and Mt. Bukhan National Parks. We reviewed literatures to select evaluation criteria. Frequently mentioned criteria and the structure of the forest which plays an importantrole of forest biodiversity were selected as the evaluation criteria. As the result, the selected evaluation indicators were 7-species diversity, species richness, evenness, rarity, disturbance species, indigenous species, and forest structure. In Mt. Jiri and Mt. Bukhan National Parks, species diversity were 3.492 and 2.943, species richness were 8.998 and 9.793, evenness were 0.849 and 0.680,rarity were 11.976 and 10.783, and disturbance species index were 0.214 and 0.357 respectively. Both national parks had abundant indigenous species and showed various forest physiognomies and stable 4-layer structure. It was found that crown density was higher in Mt. Jiri. Most indicators were implied high biodiversity in Mt. Jiri and Mt. Bukhan national parks.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the usually applicable evaluation items and system for the effective biotope assessment. For this purpose, the evaluation items and system for the biotope assessment be applicable to actuality are drafted by a review on the preceded case studies until now at the inside and outside of the country. And then this study proposed the evaluation items and system for the effective biotope assessment through continual feed back such as field applications in selected case study areas and consultations. First, the six items such as naturalness & hemeroby, diversity, size of area, isolation & connection, restoration ability and rarity for biotope assessment were suggested. Second, the assessment system is divided into the first step assessment as evaluation for the whole biotope types and the second step assessment as evaluation for ecological conservation value of individual biotope. This study suggests that the items such as naturalness & hemeroby and diversity should be evaluated in assessment step for biotope types and the items such as isolation & connection, restoration ability and rarity in assessment step for individual biotope. However, this study suggests that the evaluation items and indicators suitable to the regional conditions should be reviewed enough and selected and also the detail evaluation indicators should be supplemented with the foundation of items and system for biotope evaluation proposed in this study because the biotope evaluation should consider regional characteristics.
