  • In this paper, performance characteristics of cycles were studied when mixed working fluid was used for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Among the various mixed refrigerants for industrial heat-pump, R32/R152a used in ocean thermal energy conversion system. For simulations, R32/R152a were used in existing closed cycle and Kalina cycle which is used only ammonia and water as mixed refrigerant. Temperature of the warm heat source was 26 and 29 celsius degree, temperature of the cold heat source was 5 celsius degree. In results of simulation, Gross power of the closed cycle on R32 was 22kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.02%. When the mixed refrigerant of R32/R152a, in the ratio of 90 to 10, gross power of the closed cycle was 29.93kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.78%. Gross power and cycle efficiency of R32/R152a increased by 36% and 37% than those of existing single refrigerant. Additionally, the same simulations were conducted in Kalina cycle with the same various composition ratio of mixed refrigerant.

  • Frozen milk products are commonly made in small refrigeration machines. R-502 has long been used as a refrigerant for soft ice cream machines, but it is being replaced with R-404A due to the issue of ozone layer depletion. However, R-404A has high global warming potential, so it also needs to be replaced. In this study, a mixture of R-290 and R-32 was considered as a new refrigerant. An optimization and performance evaluation of the mixture were conducted for a freezer volume of 2.8 liters. The focus of the optimization was the appropriate refrigerant charge and the opening of the expansion valve. At the optimized conditions, ice cream was produced in 6 minutes and 24 seconds with the mixture, and the COP was 0.83. For R-404A, the ice cream production time was 6 minutes and 22 seconds, and the COP was 0.90. The results may be used for the design of food refrigeration machines and to optimize other refrigeration cycles.

  • In this study, performance of HFC32/HFC152a mixture is measured in the composition range of 20 to 50% R32 with an interval of 10% for the comparison with the conventional HCFC22 in water-source heat pumps. Tests are carried out under the same capacity in a heat pump bench tester equipped with a variable speed compressor at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of 7/$45^{\circ}C$ and -7/$41^{\circ}C$ for summer and winter conditions, respectively. Test results show that the compressor power of the HFC32/HFC152a mixture is 13.7% lower than that of HCFC22 while the coefficient of performance(COP) the HFC32/HFC152a mixture is 15.8% higher than that of HCFC22. Hence, from the view point of energy efficiency, the HFC32/HFC152a mixture is excellent as compared to HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures of HFC32/HFC152a mixture are increased up to $15.4^{\circ}C$ as compared to that of HCFC22. The amount of charge for HFC32/HFC152 mixture decrease up to 27% as compared to that of HCFC22. Overall, HFC32/ HFC152a mixture is an excellent long term candidate to replace HCFC22 in water-source heat pumps.

  • Drop-in tests were conducted using R290/R32 (31:69) mixture in an ice-cream maker for possible replacement of R-502 and R-404A. Optimum refrigerant charge and TEV opening were obtained through a series of experiments. At the standard outdoor condition ($35^{\circ}C$ DT, $24^{\circ}C$ WT), the time required for initial ice-cream making was 6'22", which was approximately the same as that of R-404A. The electric energy consumed was 660 kJ, which was about 10% higher than that of R-404A. The compressor outlet temperature ($8^{\circ}C$) and pressure (2.52 MPa) were higher than those ($60^{\circ}C$ and 1.48 MPa) of R-404A. The reason could be the usage of the same R-404A compressor although the specific volume of R290/R32 is much larger.

  • The frictional pressure drop of a capillary tube flow is experimentally investigated for pure refrigerants such as R32, R125, and R134a and refrigerant mixtures such as R32/R134a(30/70 by mass percent), R32/R125(60/40), R125/R134a(30/70), and R32/R125/R134a(23/25/52). The binary interaction parameters for the calculation of viscosities of refrigerant mixtures are found based upon the data in the open literature. Several homogeneous flow models predicting the viscosity of two-phase region are compared to select the best model. Cicchitti's equation is known to be the most adequate for the prediction of the viscosity for refrigerant mixtures, which is used in the analysis of adiabatic capillary flows. A model for the prediction of the frictional pressure drop of single and two-phase flow is developed for refrigerant mixtures in this study. This model may be used to design and analyze the performance of a capillary tube in the refrigerating system.

  • Thermodynamic performance of a simple Rankine cycle, regenerative Rankine cycle, and Kalina cycle for Ocean thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) is evaluated under the same condition with various working fluids. The evaporator and condenser are modeled by a UA and LMTD method while the turbine and pump are modeled by considering isentropic efficiencies. As for the working fluids, R22, R134a, R32, propylene, ammonia are used for the Rankine cycles while ammonia/water and R32/R134a mixtures are used for Kalina cycle. Calculated results show that newly developed fluids such non-ozone depleting refrigerants as R134a and R32 perform as well as R22 and ammonia. The regenerative Rankine cycle showed a 1.2 to 2.8% increase in energy efficiency as compared to the simple Rankine cycle while the Kalina cycle with ammonia/water mixture showed a 1.8% increase in energy efficiency. The efficiency of the Kalina cycle with R32/R134a mixtures is the same as that of a simple Rankine cycle using R22. Therefore, the regenerative Rankine cycle turns out to be best choice for OTEC applications.

  • In this study, 14 refrigerant mixtures composed of R32, R125, R134a, R143a, R152a, and R1270(Propylene) were tested in a breadboard heat pump in an attempt to replace R22 used in most of the residential air conditioners and heat pumps. The heat pump was of 1 ton capacity and water was employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under ARI test A condition. Ternary mixtures composed of R32, R125, and R134a were shown to have 4∼5% higher COP and capacity than R22 and hence they seem to be very promising candidates to replace R22. On the other hand, ternary mixtures containing R125, R134a, and R152a have lower COP and capacity than R22. R32/R134a binary mixtures show a 7% increase in COP and have the similar capacity to that of R22 and hence they are also good candidates to replace R22. Special care must be exercised when a suction line heat exchanger is used with these mixtures in air conditioners. Finally, the compressor discharge temperatures of all mixtures tested were lower than those of R22 by 15.g∼34.7t, which indicates that these mixtures would offer better system reliability and longer life time than R22.

  • A ring R is called right (resp., left) nilpotent-duo if N(R)a ⊆ aN(R) (resp., aN(R) ⊆ N(R)a) for every a ∈ R, where N(R) is the set of all nilpotents in R. In this article we provide other proofs of known results and other computations for known examples in relation with right nilpotent-duo property. Furthermore we show that the left nilpotent-duo property does not go up to a kind of matrix ring.

  • The nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments are performed using a ternary refrigerant R407C which is a candidate of alternatives of HCFC 22. The boiling phenomena for R-32, R-125, and R-134a which are the constituent refrigerants of R407C are also investigated to give the foundation of theoretical research for the mixture component boiling. The nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C is less than those of HCFC 22 which has the similar physical and transport properties. Since the experimental results show the deterioration of boiling heat transfer coefficients of ternary mixture refrigerants R407C, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C cannot be obtained by the linear combination of boiling heat transfer coefficients from its constituent components R-32, R125, and R134a.
