Detection of Deep Subsurface Cracks in Thick Stainless Steel Plate

  • Unlike conventional Eddy Current Test (ECT), Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) uses a multiple-frequency current pulse through the excitation coil. In the present study, the detection of subsurface cracks using a specially designed probe that allows the detection of a deeper crack with a relatively small current density has been attempted using the PEC technique. The tested sample is a piece of 304 stainless steel (SS304) with a thickness of 30mm. Small electrical discharge machining (EDM) notches were put in the test sample at different depths from the surface to simulate the subsurface cracks in a pipe. The designed PEC probe consists of an excitation coil and a Hall sensor and can detect a subsurface crack as narrow and shallow as 0.2 mm wide and 2 mm deep. The maximum distance between the probe and the defect is 28 mm. The peak amplitude of the detected pulse is used to evaluate the cracks under the sample surface. In time domain analysis, the greater the crack depth the greater the peak amplitude of the detected pulse. The experimental results indicated that the proposed system has the potential to detect the subsurface cracks in stainless steel plates.

A Study on the Evaluation of Motorcycle Jacket with Built-in Airbag (에어백 장착 모터사이클 쟈켓의 성능 실험방법 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a standard of guidance for testing the performance and safety of motorcycle jacket with built-in airbag. The method of testing were as follows: The effects of the motorcycle jacket with built-in airbag are experimentaly investigated according to neck injury of FMVSS 208. The experiment consists of the crash simulation test by shield and the impact test. The head and neck injuries are evaluated based on industrial standards. Also, the displacements of the head and neck and chest are observed by film analysis. Using the results of the crash simulation test, neck injury$(N_ij)$ is discussed and the peak chest deflection of the results of the impact test, chest injury is pursued. Neck injury$(N_ij)$ of the result of the crash test show that the chance of a serious wound is $18\%$ if rider wear the R&D motorcycle jacket with built-in airbag(Type A). Chest injury is expected by peak chest deflection of the result of the impact test. The result of the peak chest deflection show that the reduction effect in chest injury of Type A motorcycle jacket is $10.3\%$.

Effects of Plasticizer to Polyvinylchloride on Radio-resistance of Organic Stabilizer,Dielectric and Mechanical Characteristics under the Influence of Radiation (Polyvinylchloride에 있어 가소제의 첨가가 유기안정제의 내 방사성 및 유전, 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to investigate the properties of radiation resistance together with dielectric, and mechanical relaxation behaviors of polyvinylcholoride exposed to several different doses under the .gamma.-ray of Co$^{60}$ source, several observations were carried out on the exposed specimens propared by mixing dibutyl-tin-dilaulate and dibutyl-tin-dimaleate as stabilizer with or without adding dioctyl-phthalate as plasticizer. Conclusions obtained from the study are as follows: The origin of the absorption band at 1,540-1,640$cm^{-1}$ / on I.R. spectrum seems to be RCOO- ion originated from ionization of the stabilizer, and this peak can be useful as a measure of radiation resistance on polyvinylchloride. Addition of increasing plasticizer to polyvinylchloride exhibits increasing radiation resistance and the reason for this result may be attributed to aromatic resonance absorption of radiation energy by diotylphthalate. On dose dependent dielectric characteristics, nonplastized specimen shows a peak at about 10 Mrad and that this peak disappears on the plastification of specimens. Those phenomena may be explainable in considering the statistical distribution of scissored chain molecular segments as well as the plastification process of plasticizer to polyvinylchloride chain molecules.

  • In this paper, the (S $r_{0.85}$.C $a_{0.15}$)Ti $O_{3}$ of paraelectric grain boundary layer (GBL) ceramics were fabricated, and the analysis of microstructuye and the thermally stimulated current(TSC) were investigated for understanding effects of GBL's interfacial phenomenon on variations of electrical properties. As a result, the three peaks of .alpha., .alpha. and .betha. were obtained at the temperature of -20 [.deg. C], 20[.deg. C] and 80[.deg. C], respectively. The origins of these peaks are that the .alpha. peak observed at -20[.deg. C] looks like to be ascribed to the ionization excitation from donor level in the grain, and the .alpha.' peak observed at 20[.deg. C] appears to show up by detrap of the trapped carrier of border between the oxidation layer and the grain, and the .betha. peak observed at 80[.deg. C] seems to be resulted from hopping conduction of existing carrier in the trap site of the border between the oxidation and second phase. and second phase.

Influence of axial load and loading path on the performance of R.C. bridge piers

  • Piers are the most vulnerable part of a bridge structure during an earthquake event. During Kobe earthquake in 1995, several bridge piers of the Hanshin Expressway collapsed for more than 600m of the bridge length. In this paper, the most important results of an experimental and analytical investigation of ten reinforced concrete bridge piers specimens with the same cross section subjected to constant axial (or variable) load and reversed (or one direction) cycling loading are presented. The objective was to investigate the main parameters influencing the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers. It was found that loading history and axial load intensity had a great influence on the performance of piers, especially concerning strength and stiffness degradation as well as the energy dissipation. Controlling these parameters is one of the keys for an ideal seismic performance for a given structure during an eventual seismic event. Numerical models for the tested specimens were developed and analyzed using SeismoStruct software. The analytical results show reasonable agreement with the experimental ones. The analysis not only correctly predicted the stiffness, load, and deformation at the peak, but also captured the post-peak softening as well. The analytical results showed that, in all cases, the ratio, experimental peak strength to the analytical one, was greater than 0.95.

  • The PAPR of the input signal is increased due to OFDMA signal in a mobile communication system. High efficiency of a power amplifier, which accounts for power consumption, is a very important key technology. Digital Pre-Distortion techniques were used to improve the linearity of the power amplifier. The Asymmetric Doherty scheme was used to improve the efficiency of the power amplifier. In this paper, we propose a new structure of Asymmetric Doherty. Drive power amplifier part is separated as main path and peak path, and phase shifter is employed to improve power combine characteristics of the Doherty Amplifier. Also, envelope tracking technology for drive gate bais in drive peak amplifier is used to improve efficiency.

Mg Delta-Doping Effect on a Deep Hole Center Related to Electrical Activation of a p-Type GaN Thin Film

  • The authors investigated the photoluminescence (PL) and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) from an magnesium (Mg)-doped GaN thin film with a delta-doped layer. The regularly doped sample shows a PL peak at 2.776 eV for the as-grown sample, and the peak shifts to 2.904 eV and increases in intensity for the annealed sample. The delta-doped sample also shows the same PL peak as does the regularly doped sample. However, only the annealed delta-doped layer shows a sharp EPR with a small isotropic Lande g-factor, $g_{II}$, of 2.029. This resonance is attributed to the delta-doped layer, which forms a hole-bound Mg-N atomic structure instead of the $Mg_{Ga}-V_N$ defect complex, indicating that the delta-doped sample was not optically activated to form PL centers but was instead electrically activated to form a hole-bound state.

Driving Dynamic Characteristics of Tractor-Trailer Type Transporter for Large Scale Precision Equipment (대형 정밀장비 탑재용 트랙터-트레일러형 차량의 주행 동특성)

  • To identify the driving dynamic characteristics of the Tractor-Trailer Type Transporter for mounting a large scale precision equipment, real vehicle driving tests on the 3 inch-bump-space-road were performed. And using general Dynamics Analysis Program - RecurDyn(V8R5), Dynamics M&S were carried out assuming the similar condition with real tests. Then the acceleration data obtained from real tests and M&S were analyzed and compared with each other in the part of root-mean-square-acceleration($g_{rms}$), peak-acceleration($g_{peak}$) and frequencies. In simple view of the $g_{rms}$ & $g_{peak}$, although the results of MRBD are more similar to ones of the real vehicle driving tests, but the results of RFlex have more information to get various useful dynamic characteristics.

  • The gas-gun test is a experimental approach employed to validate the operational or structural stability when subjected to the impact energy encountered during launch or target collision. Predicting the outcomes of the gas-gun test has traditionally relied on empirical knowledge, due to numerous factors such as the bird assembly's shape, weight, material, and flight velocity. However, due to the nonlinearity and complex interactions between these variables, numerous tests are necessary to identify the necessary requirements, resulting in significant expense and time consumption during the process. The objective of this study is to forecast the variations in impact energy in future tests by developing a numerical model and analysis that aligns with the test outcomes, utilizing the ABAQUS Explicit. The outcome of the numerical analysis produced a framework that anticipates the peak g and the duration of the actual gas-sun test results, throughout post-processing techniques using FFT and LPF filters.

  • The accidents caused by drivers while driving are considered as the major causes along with other causes such as conditions of roads, weather and cars. In this study, we investigated the driver's workloads under three different driving conditions (Weather, Driving time zone, and Traffic density) through analyzing biological signals obtained from a car driving simulator system. The proposed method is able to detect R waves and R-R interval calculation in the ECG. Heart rate variability (HRV) was investigated for the time domain to determine the changes in driver's conditions.
