  • IEEE802.15.3 and IEEE802.15.4 have defined the hybrid MAC protocols based on TDMA and CSMA where a multi-frame TDMA structure is employed so that multiple data frames can be transmitted within one timeslot to guarantee minimum delay bounds of isochroous traffic. However, TDMA has an intrinsic problem that cannot dynamically allocate optimal length of timeslot to each station. Therefore the idle timeslot can be produced by stations when each transmission queue is instantaneously empty during its timeslot, which would waste lots of timeslots especially in the multi-frame TDMA systems. In this paper, we propose a more flexible multiple-access scheme for the multi-frame TDMA system based on the concept of virtual slot which is accessible by every station with the highest priority for slot owner and lower priority for other stations. Finally, our simulation results from various environments show that proposed scheme can achieve magnitude improvement of total system throughput and average message delay by maximizing channel utilization.

  • In this paper a GFC protocol based on HMR(High-speed Multimedia Ring) with a dynamic quota allocation is proposed and the performance of proposed protocol is evaluated by simulation. The HMR a medium access protocol proposed for Gbit ATM-LAN, can be applied to the GFC protocol without any modification because it uses only 4 bits for medium access of several topologies such as bus, ring and stared-bus, and priority control for satisfaction of different QoS(Quality of Service) requirements. The quota allocation method of HMR called static quota allocation has a problem of excessive access delay for the traffic with high burstness. In this paper a dynamic quota allocation method which allocates quota to the nodes according to the queue length is proposed and the performance of HMR with dynamic quota allocation is evaluated by seven simulation scenarios of CCITT. The HMR with proposed method shows better shows better access delay characteristics than the HMR with static quota allocation. Also the simulation results show that access delay performance of HMR is better than that of ATMR proposed by Japan and is similar to that of DQDB proposed by Australia.

  • Various types of error are caused due to many factors of various environment in air interface channel of wireless communications. In this case, the reliability of the channel is much lower than that of wired case. IEEE 802.15.3 high-rate WPAN, which operates in an ad hoc networking environment, is more susceptible to such errors. The problem has been investigated for wireless LANs, for example, as follows. If the queue size of a certain node is longer than that of other nodes, the node estimates that its channel state is bad and the resource of the node is decreased. However this method has a disadvantage that a central controller must always monitor the status. To avoid this disadvantage, in this paper, a new MAC protocol that the throughput of overall piconet is increased by LDS (Link-status Dependent Scheduling) is proposed.

  • We define the incomplete medium sharing system as a multi-channel shared medium communication system where any types of constraints are imposed to the set of channels that may be allocated to any transmitter-receiver node pair. A set of distributed MAC schemes are proposed, all of which are based on the CSMA/CA scheme employed in IEEE 802. 11 WLAN standards. Distributed MAC schemes are proposed in three different forms, which can be differentiated by the number and the location of back-off timers; that is, (1) one timer for all queues destined for different receiver nodes, (2) multiple timers at individual transmission queues, (3) multiple timers for individual channels. Through an extensive set of computer simulations, the performances of the proposed MAC schemes show that the MAC scheme with timers at individual transmission queues outperform the others in terms of throughput and delay for most cases considered. The complexity of the proposed schemes is also compared, and the first scheme obviously turned out to be the simplest, and the complexity of the second and third schemes depends on the number of receiver nodes and the number of channels, respectively.

  • Recent development of electronic commerce enables the use of Electronic Stock Trading Systems(ESTS) to be expanded. In ESTS, information with various sensitivity levels is shared by multiple users with mutually different clearance levels. Therefore, it is necessary to use Multilevel Secure Database Management Systems(MLS/DBMSs) in controlling concurrent execution among multiple transactions. In ESTS, not only analytical OLAP transactions, but also mission critical OLTP transactions are executed concurrently, which causes it difficult to adapt traditional secure transaction management schemes to ESTS environments. In this paper, we propose Secure One Snapshot(SOS) protocol that is devised for Secure Transaction Management in ESTS. By maintaining additional one snapshot as well as working database SOS blocks covert-channel efficiently, enables various real-time transaction management schemes to be adapted with ease, and reduces the length of waiting queue being managed to maintain freshness of data by utilizing the characteristics of less strict correctness criteria. In this paper, we introduce the process of SOS protocol with some examples, and then analyze correctness of devised protocol.

  • This paper proposes history-aware random early detection (HRED), a modified version of RED, to lessen bandwidth monopoly by a few of stations employing multiple parallel TCP flows. Stations running peer-to-peer file sharing applications such as BitTorrent use multiple TCP flows. If those stations share a link with other stations with only a small number of TCP flows, the stations occupy most of link bandwidth leading to undesirable bandwidth monopoly. HRED like RED determines whether to drop incoming packets according to probability which changes based on queue length. However it adjusts the drop probability based on bandwidth occupying ratio of stations, thus able to impose harder drop penalty on monopoly stations. The results of simulations assuming various scenarios show that HRED is at least 60% more effective than RED in supporting the bandwidth fairness among stations and at least 4% in utilization.

  • Traffic information can be broadly categorized into point information and spatial information. Point information can be obtained by chocking only the presence of vehicles at prespecified points(small area), whereas spatial information can be obtained by monitoring large area of traffic scene. To obtain spatial information by image processing, we need to track vehicles in the whole area of traffic scene. Image detector system based on global tracking consists of video input, vehicle detection, vehicle tracking, and traffic information measurement. For video input, conventional approaches used auto iris which is very poor in adaptation for sudden brightness change. Conventional methods for background generation do not yield good results in intersections with heave traffic and most of the early studies measure only point information. In this paper, we propose user-controlled iris method to remedy the deficiency of auto iris and design flame difference-based background generation method which performs far better in complicated intersections. We also propose measurement method for spatial traffic information such as interval volume/lime/velocity, queue length, and turning/forward traffic flow. We obtain measurement accuracy of 95%∼100% when applying above mentioned new methods.

  • APON, the subscriber network using bus or tree topology, requires MAC protocol, because it shares the uplink channel for many subscribers to transmit data to OLT. Although various MAC schemes, which consider each QoS characteristics of traffic are proposed considering transmission characteristics of ATM traffic class, existing schemes reduce the network efficiency by increasing transmission overhead in frame. In this paper, we propose new MAC scheme, which shows similar performance as those of existing schemes but does not increase transmission overhead. To prevent increasing transmission overhead, the proposed scheme encodes the information about each cell information of traffic of the local queue in RAU transmitted periodically from ONU to OLT Thus, the proposed MAC scheme shows similar performance as those of existing ones and increases efficiency of entire network.

  • For the last several decades, many researches have been performed to distribute bandwidth fairly between sessions. In this problem, the most important challenge is to realize a scalable implementation and high fairness simultaneously. Here high fairness means that bandwidth is distributed fairly even in short time intervals. Unfortunately, existing scheduling algorithms either are lack of scalable implementation or can achieve low fairness. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm that can achieve feasible fairness without losing scalability. The proposed algorithm is a Hierarchical Deficit Round-Robin (H-DRR). While H-DRR requires a constant time for implementation, the achievable fairness is similar to that of Packet-by-Packet Generalized Processor Sharing(PGPS) algorithm. PGPS has worse scalability since it uses a sorted-priority queue requiring O(log N) implementation complexity where N is the number of sessions.

  • In the guaranteed service, a real-time scheduling algorithm must achieve both high level of network utilization and scalable implementation. Here, network utilization indicates the number of admitted real-time sessions. Unfortunately, existing scheduling algorithms either are lack of scalable implementation or can achieve low network utilization. For example, scheduling algorithms based on time-stamps have the problem of O(log N) scheduling complexity where N is the number of sessions. On the contrary, round-robin algorithms require O(1) complexity. but can achieve just a low level of network utilization. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm that can achieve high network utilization without losing scalability. The proposed algorithm is a Hierarchical Round-Robin (H-RR) algorithm that utilizes multiple rounds with different interval sizes. It provides latency bounds similar to those by Packet-by-Packet Generalized Processor Sharing (PGPS) algorithm using a sorted-Priority queue. However, H-RR requires a constant time for implementation.
