  • In this study, the direct water quenching technique is applied to validate the applicability of direct water quenching as a cooling method in the hot stamping process of 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Cooling performance of conventional die quenching and direct water quenching is compared. Higher cooling rate is obtained by hot stamping with direct water quenching compared to die quenching. As the flow rate of cooling water increases, the cooling rate increases, and a high cooling rate of 71 ℃/s is achieved under flow rate conditions of 0.8 L/min. Through direct water quenching, the cooling time required for sufficient cooling of the sheet is reduced. Full martensitic microstructure is obtained under flow rate condition of 0.8 L/min. Hardness increases with increasing flow rate. From these results, it is verified that the direct water quenching is applicable to the hot stamping of thick boron steel sheet.

  • It has already been known that quenching effect is influenced greatly by stirring and changing coolant's temperature on quenching. But according to the past investigations its effect has not been taken into consideration quantitatively in the cooling process. The purpose of this study is that the influence of flow rate and temperature on the quenching effect of cooling water as quenching medium is quantitatively examined by using the open channel. The stream of water in this study is turbulent flow. The temperature of the specimen made of pure copper is measured by CA thermocouple in the vicinity of the surface and recorded by an automatic recorder during the quenching process in city water. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The quenching effect of cooling water generally increases with Reynolds Number(characteristic length; specimen diameter)as shown in the experimental formula; but at the realm of Reynolds Number from 1.2 * 10$^{4}$ to 9.2 * 10$^{4}$, the increasing rate of quenching effect shows little increase. 2. The increasing rate of quenching effect was increased under the flow rate of 221 cm/sec. On the other hand, it was decreased below this flow rate. 3. The quenching effect was influenced by the water temperature and the flow rate. But it was rather dependent upon the former than the latter. 4. Although the quenching effect appeared loosely in the water temperature of 50.deg. C, it was shown that the quenching effect increased in the low flow rate of 31 cm/sec. comparing with the still water. 5. It is desirable to design the quenching system to be over 1.2 * 10$^{4}$ in Reynolds Number or over, 3000$cm^{-1}$ / in V/v in order to increase the quenching effect of the system using open channel.annel.

  • Fluorescence quenching of coumarin 153 and coumarin 481 with N,N-dimethylaniline in various solvents was investigated. Quenching rate constants are related to diffusion-limited rate constants to some extent. It is noted that smaller discrepancy was observed between the diffusion-limited rate constant and the experimental quenching rate constant when the stick boundary condition rather than the slip boundary condition was applied for estimating the diffusion coefficients. In nonpolar solvent like cyclohexane fluorescence quenching is adequately explained by the diffusion controlled process within the experimental error, but in acetonitrile the quenching rate constant was estimated to be consistently smaller than the diffusion limited rate constant. This may suggest that fluorescence quenching of coumarin dyes be affected not only by the molecular diffusion but also by the intramoleccular process such as charge separation.

  • The effect of photoquenching on infrared image of the EL2 center in semi-insulating(S.I.) GaAs has been studied using near infrared transmission techniques. Particular interest is devoted to as-grown and annealed samples of undoped S.I. GaAs. It is found that the quenching mechanism is different in each sample and also the quenching rate is dependent on the materials and the quenching temperature which is somewhat inconsistent with other existing publications.

  • Direct water quenching technique can be used in hot stamping process to obtain higher cooling rate compared to that of the normal die cooling method. In the direct water quenching process, setting proper water flow rate in consideration of material thickness and the size of the area directly cooled in the component is important to ensure uniform microstructure and mechanical properties. In this study, to derive proper water flow rate conditions that can achieve uniform microstructure and mechanical properties, microstructure and hardness distribution in various water flow rate conditions are measured for 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Hardness distribution is uniform under the flow condition of 1.5 L/min or higher. However, due to the lower cooling rate in that area, the lower flow conditions result in a drastic decrease in hardness in some areas in the hot-stamped part, resulting in low martensite fraction. From these results, it is found that the selection of proper water flow rate is an important factor in hot stamping with direct water quenching process to ensure uniform mechanical properties.

  • An Experimental study on the characteristics of high pressure gas quenching system was carried out in the present study. The characteristics of gas quenching system have been studied with high pressure gas chamber and specimen for various gas pressure and velocity which are the design parameter of quenching system. The quenching gas was used compressed air which properties are very similar with Nitrogen gas usually used in industrial gas quenching system. The result shows that the quenching rate of mid surface of specimen is lower than each ends of them which are close to low temperature quenching surface. And to increases the quenching intensity, the increment of quenching gas pressure is more efficient than the increment of quenching gas velocity at the point of reducing the circulation fan power.

  • Emission quenching of photoexcited tris(${\alpha},{\alpha} '$-diimine)-ruthenium(II) complex cations, $RuL_3^{2+}$ (L: 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine; 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine; 1,10-phenanthroline; 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline; 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) by $Cu^{2+}$, dimethylviologen $(MV^{2+})$, nitrobenzene (NB), and oxygen was studied in aqueous homogeneous and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solutions. The apparent bimolecular quenching rate constants $k_q$ were determined from the quenching data and life-times of $^{\ast}RuL_3^{2+}$. In homogeneous media, the quenching rate was considerably slower than that for the diffusion-controlled reaction. The decreasing order of quenching activity of quenchers was $NB>O_2>MV^{2+}>Cu^{2+}$. The rate with $Cu^{2+}$ was faster as the reducing power of $^{\ast}RuL_3^{2+}$ is greater. On the other hand, the rates with NB and $O_2$ were faster as the ligand is more hydrophobic. This was attributed to the stabilization of encounter pair by van der Waals force. The presence of SDS enhanced the rate of quenching reactions with $Cu^{2+}$ and $MV^{2+}$, whereas it attenuated the quenching activity of NB and $O_2$ toward $RuL_3^{2+}$. The binding affinity of quenchers to SDS micelle and binding sites of the quenchers and $RuL_3^{2+}$ in micelle appear to be important factors controlling the micellar effect on the quenching reactions.

  • Quenching of excimer fluorescence from polystyrene-acrylic acid copolymers containing $Eu^{3+}$ has been studied in tetrahydrofuran solution using simple aromatic hydrocarbons as quenchers under steady-state conditions. Aromatic hydrocarbons quenched collisionally the excimer fluorescence and their rate constants of quenching were determined. The magnitude of quenching constant is interpreted in terms of the cube root of the molar volume of quencher. Cycloalkanes were not effective in quenching the excimer fluorescence possibly due to different solubility characteristics from aromatic hydrocarbons.

  • The fluorescence quenching of 2-phenyl-5-(4-biphenylyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) and 1,4-di-[2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)]-benzene (POPOP) by aniline has been carried out in different solvent mixtures of dioxane and acetonitrile at room temperature. The quenching is found to be appreciable and a positive deviation from linearity was observed in the Stern-Volmer plot in all the solvent mixtures. Various rate constants for the quenching processes have been determined using a modified Stern-Volmer equation. From the positive deviations of linear Stern-Volmer plots and the dependence of rate constants on the polarity of the solvents, it has been concluded that both static and dynamic quenching processes are responsible for the observed positive deviation in the Stern-Volmer plot.
