Quench recovery characteristics of YBCO thin film type superconducting fault current limiter (YBCO 박막형 초전도 한류소자의 퀜치 회복 특성에 관한 연구)

  • For the application of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) to the protection system, quench recovery characteristics of Au/YBCO thin film were investigated. The Au/YBCO thin film was designed as a SFCL element with a bi-spiral pattern. The SFCL element limited the fault current successfully. For the analysis of the recovery to superconducting state, we measured resistance variation of the SFCL element after the quench. In addition, in order to investigate the dependence of quench characteristics of SFCL on the $LN_2$ cooling condition, we measured the recovery time under a pressure of 1, 2 and 3 atm. As the results, the recovery time increased in proportion to the duration of the fault currents. In the sub-cooled condition, while the quench development was exactly the same, the recovery time was shortened as the pressure increased.

  • Since a stabilizer of YBCO coated conductor (CC) plays a very important role of bypassing over-current and transferring heat generated in the moment of fault, it is one of big issues to determine the material of the stabilizer and its dimension for the high performance of the HTS power application system. Especially, in the case of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which requires it to react immediately to the occurrence of fault, characteristics of stabilizer are decisive in limiting fault current and recovering superconducting properties during and after quenching. In this paper, the quench / recovery characteristics of YBCO CCs with various thickness of stabilizer were analyzed. The quench/recovery test carried out at 20 $V_{rms}$, 5 cycles (60 Hz) and results showed that as the thickness of the stabilizer decreased, both the final approach temperature and the recovery time decreased.

  • A serious problem in using YBCO films for fault current limiter is inhomogeneities caused by imperpect manufacturing. So simultaneous quenches are a difficult problem which elements for current limiting are connected in series for increasing voltage ratings. We investigated extended electric field - current characteristics for current limiting element of YBCO film when 0-130mT magnetic field is applied. And quench characteristics were investigated in over all element and between elements of YBCO films. From the experiments, it was shown that applied magnetic fields using solenoid coil induced uniform quench distribution for over all stripes and simultaneous quench in all elements for current limiting of YBCO film was realized.

  • The resistive fault current limiter (SFCL) is a very attractive device for power networks. But it has a serious Problem in using YBCO films for fault current limiter is inhomogeneities caused by imperpect manufacturing. So simultaneous quenches are a difficult problem which elements for current limiting are connected in series for increasing voltage ratings. We have achieved resistive fault current limiter of 1.2kV/20A rating using magnetic field.

  • The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) connects the two parallel windings in parallel with a ferromagnetic core. We suggest that the double quench flux-lock type SFCL should add a third winding. We analyzed characteristics of the fault current and the peak current using the quench of the high-Tc superconducting element. The proposed SFCL's inductances of a primary winding and the third winding were fixed and the amplitude of inductance of the secondary winding was changed. We found that the fault current can be more effectively controlled through the analysis of the equivalent circuit and the short-circuit tests.

  • To limit fault current in a power system, superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) using high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils have been developed by many research groups so far. Non-inductive winding of HTS coils used for SFCLs can be classified into solenoid winding and pancake winding. Each of winding is expected to have different quench and recovery characteristics because the structure of solenoid winding differs from pancake winding's. Therefore it is important to the SFCLs application to investigate characteristics of each winding. In this paper, we deal with quench and recovery characteristics of four kinds of winding : solenoid winding, pancake winding without spacers, and with spacers of 2 and 4 mm thickness. In order to obtain quench and recovery parameters of coils, short circuit tests were performed in liquid nitrogen.

  • We have studied quench characteristics for current limiting elements of YBCO films in applied fields of 0 - 130 mT. The films were deposited on sapphire substrates and covered by gold top layer. The current limiting element consists of 2 mm wide YBCO stripes connected in series. The electric field - current density (E-J) measurements showed that the presence of applied magnetic fields induces uniform quench distribution for the stripes, otherwise non-uniform quenches were observed. We suggest that suppressing the critical current by increased fields due to fault current effectively forced the stripes of higher Jc(0) to quench, resulting in equalizing quench times.

  • A quench phenomenon is caused by an external disturbance in a superconducting magnet, where the magnet is operating in a cryogenic environment. The heat coupling between the layers and pancakes of the magnet can induce the normal zone propagation with fast speed. In order to analyze quench behavior in a pancake-shaped superconducting magnet, a quasi-three-dimensional model is proposed. A moving mesh finite volume method is employed in solving the heat conduction equation. The quench process of the superconducting magnet is studied under the various operating conditions and cooling conditions.

  • YBCO film을 이용하여 2 stripe-meander 형태의 초전도 한류기를 제작하고 시험하였다. 초전도 film의 hot spot에 의해 발생하는 열을 분산시키기 위해 gold shunt layer를 입혔다. 사고각 $0^{\circ}$에서 사고발생 후 최초 quench 전류값은 $9.56A_{peak}$이었고 약 0.63 msec동안 fast quench 가 진행되고 이후에는 gold층의 열발생에 의한 저항증가가 약 3주기동안 진행된 후 안정되었다. 사고각 $45^{\circ}$$90^{\circ}$ 에서는 전류가 상승하는 도중 혹은 최고지점에서 사고가 발생했기 때문에 fast quench time이 각각 0.56 msec와 0.26msec를 보였다. 초전도 한류기를 적용하였을 때 사고전류는 사고직후 약 5배, 3주기후에는 약 8.5배까지 효과적으로 제한함을 알 수 있었다.

  • Quench characteristics of HTS cable conductor due to external magnetic field were investigated. Firstly, the influence of critical characteristics of HTS tape on locally applied magnetic field was examined. Secondly, critical current of HTS tapes, which are wound on surface of former, were measured respectively, before the experiment for quench characteristics, Finally, 50mT and 100mT were applied to HTS cable conductor and quench characteristics were investigated through V-I curves. As the results, same as the result of HTS tape, HTS cable conductor showed strong dependence on external magnetic field with direction and magnitude.
