Open release remains the gold standard in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome in cases where conservative treatment fails. However, the efficacy of carpal tunnel release in the elderly has been debated in the literature throughout the years. This review aims to review the current evidence pertaining to the efficacy of carpal tunnel release in the elderly. Based on the current evidence, the outcome of carpal tunnel release is unpredictable in the elderly. Elderly patients are also less satisfied with the operation compared to younger patients. The authors recommend that these messages be conveyed to elderly patients before surgery. Moreover, open carpal tunnel release should be offered in the early stages of treatment whenever operative management is indicated.

Glomus tumours are vascular hamartomas that are commonly found in the hand, particularly the subungual region. They appear as solitary or multiple tumours, and often present as a bluish discoloration of the nail plate. Different diagnostic tests are outlined, as well as imaging studies such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis of these tumours are common, while a familial tendency is a potential risk factor but not yet proven. Complete surgical excision often results in complete symptomatic relief, while recurrences are largely due to incomplete excision or the growth of a new glomus tumour. This article aims to review the key aspects of glomus tumours and provide a diagnostic algorithm so that the lesion can be recognized and treated earlier.

The paper discussed various techniques for islanding detection and described in detail the working principles of ROCOF and vector shift relays. A simulator was used to investigate why the stability of both types of relays maybe affected by network and load switching, short-circuit faults and in the case of a ROCOF relay the loss of bulk generation or the tripping of a transmission feeder. Finally, to enhance the reliability of Loss of Mains protection, a new islanding detection technique based on a GPS synchronized phasor measurement system was proposed.

Random network coding can be viewed as a single block code applied to all source packets. To manage the concomitant high coding complexity, source packets can be partitioned into generations; block coding is then performed on each set. To reach a better performance-complexity tradeoff, we propose a novel concatenated network code which mixes generations while retaining the desirable properties of generation-based coding. Focusing on the code's erasure performance, we show that the probability of successfully decoding a generation on erasure channels can increase substantially for any erasure rate. Using both analysis (for small networks) and simulations (for larger networks), we show how the code's parameters can be tuned to extract best performance. As a result, the probability of failing to decode a generation is reduced by nearly one order of magnitude.

In this study, we prepared alcohol extracts of the larva, pupa, queen, and cocoon (clony) of B. ignitus, B. terrestris, and B. h. sapporoensis, and tested the anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts by using a rat model of adjuvant-induced edema. The extracts derived from the queen of B. ignitus, the queen of B. terrestris, and the cocoon of B. ignitus decreased hind paw edema after 1 day of i.p. administration. These extracts also induced vasorelaxation and NO production in calf pulmonary artery endothelial cells. These results suggest that bumblebee alcohol extracts has anti-inflammatory and vasorelaxant properties.

서왕모(西王母) 존숭 현상은 고금에 걸쳐 중국은 물론 한국에서도 많은 관심의 대상이 되었던 이른바 '문화적 흐름'의 한 현상을 엿볼 수 있는 대상에 해당한다. 서왕모에 관한 이같은 문화적 흐름을 이해하는 것은 동아시아 여성과 관련된 신화는 물론 여성관의 변모를 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 의미가 있다. 가부장제 사회의 정착과 더불어 여신과 남신의 관계도 점차 차이에서 차별의 관계로 만들어진다. 이에 여성은 의미를 부여하는 주체보다는 의미를 부여받는 대상으로 변화함에 따라 여신의 탈신성화가 일어나게 된다. 본고는 여신의 탈신성화 경향에 나타난 여신의 남신의 보조자 혹은 배우자로 탈바꿈하는 이런 변천 과정에는 음양론 사유가 작동하고 있음을 서왕모 인식 변화에 초점을 맞추어 살펴보았다. 음양론은 중국의 철학은 물론 문화와 역사 및 예술을 이해하는 관건인데, 이런 점은 신화와 여성이란 주제에도 그대로 적용되었다. 서왕모가 반인반수(半人半獸)의 여신으로 규정되다가 여선으로 변모하는 과정에서 특히 주목할 것은 이른바 절대 미인이면서 예술적 재능을 가진 인물로 묘사된다는 점이다. 본고에서는 이같은 절대미인이면서 예술적 재능을 가진 서왕모에 대한 인식에는 음양론 차원에서 이해된 여인상 및 가부장제 사회에서 남성이 바라는 여인상에 대한 바람이 담겨 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 『산해경(山海經)』의 서왕모는 하늘의 재앙과 형벌을 주관하는 반인반수의 공포감을 주는 형상이지만, 한대에는 벽사(闢邪)와 기복(祈福)의 대상으로 신앙화되고, 위진남북조의 지괴소설(志怪小說)에서는 장생불사를 주관하는 여선(女仙)으로 변모하는 과정에 담긴 서왕모에 관한 인식 변화에는 음양론 관점에서 봤을 때 주대 종법제(宗法制)에 의한 가부장제 확립과 더불어 이후 형성된 음양론에서의 양 위주의 사유 및 남성 위주의 시선이 작동하고 있었음을 알 수 있었다.

본 논문에서는 기 개발된 등급기준 돌연변이 확률조절방법에 여왕벌진화방법을 융합하여 유전자알고리즘의 성능을 향상시키는 방법을 제안한다. 등급기준 돌연변이 확률조절 방법은 유전자알고리즘의 개체가 지역 최적해에 빠지는 것을 방지하고 지역 최적해에 빠졌을 경우 쉽게 빠져나올 수 있게 하는 방법으로 기존 알고리즘에 비하여 일정부분 성능향상을 보였다. 그러나 이 방법은 지역최적해가 많건 적건 간에 전역 최적해가 한 곳에 작은 영역에 있는 문제에서는 그다지 성능이 좋지 않았다. 우리는 그 이유가 이 방법이 전역 최적해로의 수렴성이 부족한 것으로 판단하고 수렴성을 강화시키기 위하여 여왕벌 진화방법을 융합한 알고리즘을 본 논문에서 제안한다. 여왕벌진화방법은 여왕벌의 생식을 모사한 방법으로 수렴성을 강화시킬 수 있는 방법이다. 제안한 방법의 성능을 측정하기위하여 4개의 함수최적화문제에 적용해본 결과 우리가 예상한대로 전역 최적해가 한 곳에 작은 영역에 몰려있는 문제에서는 상당한 성능향상이 일어나는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 그러나 전역 최적해가 넓은 영역에 걸쳐있는 문제에서는 성능향상이 거의 없었으며 전역 최적해가 여러 곳에 멀리 떨어져 있는 문제에서는 강한 수렴성으로 인하여 오히려 성능이 나빠지는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 실험결과로 보았을 때 본 논문에서 제안한 방법은 전역 최적해가 한 곳에 몰려있는 문제에서 매우 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Most of the photoperiodic responses result in a sharp contrast between development in long and short days, so that qualitative observations are quite sufficient to establish that development is under photoperiodic control, and qualitative information of this type is all that is available for many of the responses (Dring 1984). However, we need to devise some quantitative measurement of the response in order to study the physiological mechanism of photoperiodic control. We report here the quantification of photoperiodic control of erect thalli production of Sargassum muticum in different daylength regimes. (omitted)

실시간으로 매설된 송유관이나 가스관의 내부에 누설자속 (Magnetic Flux Leakage: MFL) 탐지용 피그를 통과시킴으로서 부식을 모니터한다[1]. NdFeB 자석과 같은 강한 영구자석으로 배관을 자화시키면 부식에 의한 결함 근처에서 자속이 누설되고, 그 MFL은 Hall 프로브나 유도코일에 의해 탐지된다. 자기이방성을 이용하여 응력에 의만 누설자속신호 변화를 계산할 수 있다. MFL 신호를 정밀하게 분석하기 위해서는 측정프로브의 측정속도와 내부압력응력과 같은 운용조건을 고려하여야 한다[2]. (중략)

In this paper, we prove a fixed point theorem for G-contractive type non-self mapping in cone metric space endowed with a graph. Our result generalizes many results in the literature and provide a new pavement for solving nonlinear functional equations.
