Development and Validation of Predictive Model for Salmonella Growth in Unpasteurized Liquid Eggs

  • Liquid egg products can be contaminated with Salmonella spp. during processing. A predictive model for the growth of Salmonella spp. in unpasteurized liquid eggs was developed and validated. Liquid whole egg, liquid yolk, and liquid egg white samples were prepared and inoculated with Salmonella mixture (approximately 3 Log CFU/mL) containing five serovars (S. Bareilly, S. Richmond, S. Typhimurium monophasic, S. Enteritidis, and S. Gallinarum). Salmonella growth data at isothermal temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}C$) was collected by 960 h. The population of Salmonella in liquid whole egg and egg yolk increased at above $10^{\circ}C$, while Salmonella in egg white did not proliferate at all temperature. These results demonstrate that there is a difference in the growth of Salmonella depending on the types of liquid eggs (egg yolk, egg white, liquid whole egg) and storage temperature. To fit the growth data of Salmonella in liquid whole egg and egg yolk, Baranyi model was used as the primary model and the maximum growth rate and lag phase duration for each temperature were determined. A secondary model was developed with maximum growth rate as a function of temperature. The model performance measures, bias factor ($B_f$, 0.96-0.99) and $r^2$ (0.96-0.99) indicated good fit for both primary and secondary models. In conclusion, it is thought that the growth model can be used usefully to predict Salmonella spp. growth in various types of unpasteurized liquid eggs when those are exposed to various temperature and time conditions during the processing.

  • The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are high fever, cough, headache, and fever. These symptoms may vary from person to person, but checking for "fever" is the government's most basic measure. To confirm this, many facilities use thermographic cameras. Since the previously developed thermographic camera measures body temperature one by one, it takes a lot of time to measure body temperature in places where many people enter and exit, such as multi-use facilities. In order to prevent malfunctions and errors and to prevent sensitive personal information collection, this research team attempted to develop a facial recognition thermographic camera. The purpose of this study is to compensate for the shortcomings of existing thermographic cameras with disaster safety IoT integrated solution products and to provide quarantine systems using advanced facial recognition technologies. In addition, the captured image information should be protected as personal sensitive information, and a recent leak to China occurred. In order to prevent another case of personal information leakage, it is urgent to develop a thermographic camera that reflects this part. The thermal imaging camera system based on facial recognition technology developed in this study received two patents and one application as of January 2022. In the COVID-19 infectious disease disaster, 'quarantine' is an essential element that must be done at the preventive stage. Therefore, we hope that this development will be useful in the quarantine management field.

비관세조치 현황분석을 통한 대응방안 (Countermeasures through Non-triff Status Analysis)

  • WTO설립과 FTA협정의 증가로 관세는 낮아지고 있으나 무역구제조치와 무역기술장벽(TBT), 위생검역(SPS), 통관규제 등의 비관세조치들이 무역장벽이 되어 자유무역을 제한하고 있다. 수출주도 경제성장을 이룬 우리나라는 증가하는 비관세조치들에 대하여 대응방안을 제시하여야 한다. 비관세조치들은 복잡하고 국가마다 적용되는 것이 다르므로 유형별, 산업별, 국가별로 맞춤형 대응방안을 제시하여야한다. 이를 위해 비관세조치DB를 구축하여야한다. 이런 비관세조치들을 수집하고 분석하여 대응방안을 제시하기 위해서는 정부 산하의 전담조직이 반드시 필요하다. 그리고 비관세조치에 대한 상대국 간의 협의 등과 WTO위원회에서 활동이 중요하다. 또한 비관세조치에 관한 역량과 전문성을 가진 전문 인력 양성이 필요하다. 기존의 연구가 각 국가의 비관세조치현황을 토대로 한 연구나 국제기구의 보고서 등을 통하여 분석하였기 때문에 조치유형의 식별과 국가 간 비교분석에 한계가 있었다. 그러므로 본고는 규제의 식별과 국가 간 비교가 가능한 WTO I-TIP의 비관세조치DB를 바탕으로 분석하였다.

2020년 코로나-19 관련 한국 주요 신문에서 방역관련 주요 주제어 분석 (Analysis on the Key Words related to Healthcare Issues of the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 in Major Korean Newspapers, 2020)

  • 이 연구는 2020년 코로나-19 관련 신문기사를 유행기간에 따른 방역조치 범주별 주요 주제어 중심으로 분석하여, 한국 사회에서 코로나-19관련 방역에 대한 보도의 전체적인 내용과 경향을 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 2020년 2월 17일부터 12월 31일까지 보수, 중도, 진보 성향의 세가지 신문의 코로나-19 관련 기사를 이용하여 분석하였으며, 이 중 월요일과 목요일의 1면기사를 대상으로 하였다. 수집된 자료는 R studio를 이용하여 코로나-19 유행기간에 따른 각 범주별 주제어 언급빈도의 관련성을 카이제곱검정 등을 통하여 확인하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2020년 코로나-19 유행기간별로 한국의 3대 신문의 1면 기사에서 방역조치 범주별 주요 주제어를 분석한 결과, 비약물적 조치가 54.3%로 가장 많았으며, 3Ts(검사, 추적, 치료 및 백신) 31.9% 순이었다. 둘째, 유행기간별 기사의 건수는 제1차 휴지기가 28.5%로 가장 많았고, 비약물적 조치 기사는 제1차 휴지기 30.6%, 3Ts 제1차 유행기 28.6%로 가장 많아 유행기간별로 방역조치 범주별 주요 주제어 보도가 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<0.05) 셋째, 비약물적 조치 범주에서 주요 주제어를 분석한 결과, 전체적으로 사회적 거리두리가 33.9%로 가장 많았으며, 공공시설 제한운영이 17%, 영업제한 14.2%, 마스크와 손씻기 12.3% 등 순이었다. 유행기간별로 비약물적 조치는 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<0.01). 넷째, 3Ts(검사, 추적, 치료) 및 백신 등 범주에서 주요 주제어을 분석해 보면, 전체적으로 진단검사가 41.8%, 역학조사 및 병상관련이 각각 20.9%였으며, 치료제 및 백신이 16.5% 등 순이었으며, 유행기별로 3Ts(검사, 추적, 치료) 및 백신 등 주제어가 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<0.01). 2020년 코로나-19 관련 신문기사를 유행기간에 따른 방역조치 범주별 주요 주제어을 분석한 결과, 비약물적 조치가 가장 많았고, 유행기간별로 방역조치 범주별 주요 주제어 보도가 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 있었음을 확인하였다.

부분예산분석을 이용한 오제스키병 발생 농가의 경제적 손실 추정 (Partial Budget Modeling of Economic Losses of Aujeszky's Disease)

  • Aujeszky's disease (AD) is a respiratory, infectious viral illness associated with high mortality, especially in neonatal piglets and has frequently been considered an economically important disease in many endemic countries. Although AD is still occurring in a geographically defined region in Korea, little attention has been paid to the economics of AD. In this study, partial budget technique was used to develop a simulation model to measure financial losses following the disease epidemic in a swine operation utilizing stochastic or deterministic parameters from the literatures and the index case herd of AD occurred in 2005, where available and applicable. For the infected case herd with a 12500-pig, the total economic loss for this operation was estimated to be about 199 million Korean won (95% confidence interval [CI] 148,645,000-250,741,000). Given net loss due to death of a pig at sow level was 119,000 won, total loss for the case herd with 1200 sows accounted for 143 million won (95% CI 92,599,000-193,729,000). The net loss of the death of one pig at growing and fattening level resulted in loss of 46,000 won (95% CI 40,000-53,000) and 126,000 won (95% CI 122,000-131,000), respectively. Taking into account for the number of pigs raised in the case herd, total loss amounted to 8 million won (95% CI 7,167,000-9,347,000) and 12 million won (95% CI 11,959,000-12,891,000), for growers and fatteners, respectively, assuming 63% of saved feed intake when a pig dies halfway through the respective period. Under the model's assumptions, suckling pig mortality was the major factors of loss in estimating the economic consequences (approximately 71.8% of the total loss). The high economic losses of a herd infected with AD suggest that the effective and region-specific control measures should be implemented in disease endemic foci.

The COVID-19 pandemic: an unprecedented tragedy in the battle against childhood obesity

  • The childhood obesity pandemic has emerged as an important public health problem in many countries. Obese children are likely to become obese adults, and adult obesity is associated with an increased risk of morbidity. Therefore, controlling the childhood obesity epidemic has become a top public health priority worldwide. The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may significantly impede this important mission and constitute an unprecedented tragedy in the global battle against childhood obesity. This manuscript presents evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic will aggravate the childhood obesity epidemic and lead to significant weight gain in school children by creating an unprecedented obesogenic environment. Within the last few months, many countries took uncompromising measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including school closures and quarantine. While these steps are often necessary to ensure infection control, they may have a significant negative effect on children's mental and physical health. Physical, nutritional, and psychosocial factors that promote obesity in children during this special situation complementarily contribute to an unprecedented obesogenic environment. Large-scale quarantine and home confinement will impose new and unfamiliar stressors on children, thereby worsening the childhood obesity epidemic. Most importantly, adverse childhood events resulting from a predicted increase in domestic violence within the next few months will significantly contribute to this concern. The scenario presented in this review is of paramount public health importance and must be considered during future pandemic planning. Involved stakeholders, including governments, schools, and families, must make all possible efforts to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on childhood obesity.

돼지 생식기호흡증후군 바이러스의 항체분포 및 역학조사 (Seroprevalence and epidemiological analysis of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in Korea)

  • A nation wide sero-epidemiological survey of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS) was carried out to analyze the current status of the PRRS virus infections in the field using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay(IFA) with the field isolate PL96-1. Since the first report of the antibody detection to PRRSV in 1993, the prevalence of seropositive pigs has increased dramatically and the data indicate that over 21% of the pigs and around 60% of the farms showed seropositives to the PRRS virus. A slightly higher positive rate was recognized in breeders than fattenings and it might be due to the higher age at the time of testings. No significant regional differences were detected in the sero-epidemiological survey. Higher sero-positive rate in growers indicates that PRRSV infection in the field was common after weaning(around 40 days). However, the number of seropositive pigs were declined in fattening pigs. Sows showed around 26% of sero-positive rate that there is a higher chance of continuous virus circulation in the infected farms. Low rate of sero-positivity in boars(9.8%) implies that there is high demand in proper control measures to prevent virus spreading through breeding procedures such as natural or artificial insemination. Therefore it was concluded that PRRSV infection in domestic swine herds is endemic and the positive rate and economic loses will be increased by spontaneous infections in naive farms.

현장 조사를 통한 가축전염병 대응 정책개선 방안 연구 (Study on Policy Improvement Measures to Respond to Infectious Diseases of Livestock through Field Investigation)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구는 가축전염병 가축사체처리 및 방역관리에 대한 특성을 분석하고, 가축전염병 방역과 사후 관리의 실효성을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구방법: 실제로 가축전염병이 발생하여 가축 사체를 처리한 매몰지 및 매몰 관리시설을 현장 방문하여 관리현황과 문제점을 분석하였다. 연구결과: 가축전염병 발생 가축의 매몰방식과 그에 따른 장기적인 후속 관리는 많은 인력과 예산을 투입하게 만들어 비효율적인 방역시스템임을 알 수 있었다. 결론: 2차적인 감염병 전파우려가 없고 후속 관리가 필요 없는 정부와 광역 시도 및 시군구 차원의 통합 가축전염병동물 사체처리 시설 설립 방안의 검토가 필요하다.

  • The present surveys were conducted in attempts to investigate the health situation of horses in Korea through mass-screening the samples serologically, bacteriologically and clinically. A total of 575 horses were sampled randomly, comprising 126 from the Korean Horse Affairs Association, 288 from the Korean Equestrian Federation and 161 from the Jeju ponies. Each of the samples taken was tested for diagnoses of 18 horse diseases including African horse sickness. Summarised below are the results obtained from this surveys. 1. From results of the serological survey it is evident that Korea is currently free from African horse sickness, dourine, glanders, vesicular stomatits, equine piroplasmosis, equine viral arteritis, Venezuelan encephalomyelitis and contagious equine metritis. Constant vigilence with strengthened quarantine measures is thus vital for maintaining freedom of any those diseases in Korea. 2. No clinical case was observed with any of signs or symptoms of infectious lymphangitis, anthrax and infestations with ringworm, mange or scab. However, continuous follow-up is required for establishing the evidence of no occurrence of the diseases in Korea. 3. One case of seropositive to equine infectious anemia may fully justify systematic and regular testings for the whole population of horse in Korea. 4. It is manifested that equine rhinopneumonitis, Japanese encephalitis and Getah virus infection are well established in Korea, together with the presence of equine infectious abortion(Salmonella abortus equi). This strongly entails preventive precautions before entry into Korea for the horses participating in the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

고병원성 조류인플루엔자(HPAI) 발생농가 입지특성 (Locational Characteristics of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza(HPAI) Outbreak Farm)

  • 본 연구는 가축질병이 밀집되어 발생했던 지역인 경기도 남부-충청도의 감염농가 입지 특성을 파악하여 가금농가의 질병 발생 확률을 분석하고 조건에 해당하는 지역을 도출하여 가축질병 발생예방과 차별적인 방역지역 선정 및 방역전략 설정의 근거와 보완대책의 기초자료로 사용하기 위해 수행되었다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 반경 3km내 가금농가 1개가 증가하면 HPAI에 감염될 확률이 전 단위에 비해 10.9% 증가한다. 2차선 이상 주요 도로와의 거리 1m가 증가하면 HPAI에 감염될 확률이 전 단위에 비해 0.001% 감소한다. 주요 철새도래지와의 15km 이내에 가금농가가 위치한 경우에서 15~30km로 변화하면 HPAI에 감염될 확률이 46.0% 감소한다. 주요 철새도래지와의 거리가 15km 이내에 가금농가가 위치한 경우에서 30km 이상으로 변화하면 HPAI에 감염될 확률이 88.5% 감소한다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과를 바탕으로 예측확률을 생성하고 도출된 입지요인인' 반경 3km내 가금농가 15개 초과, 주요 도로와의 거리 1km이내, 주요 철새도래지와의 거리 30 km이내'의 실제 지역을 도출하고 감염 비율을 측정하였다. 본 연구의 결과가 지역 내에서 가축질병이 발생할 확률이 높은 지역을 판별하여, 방역 주체가 대상 지역과 농가에 대해 선제적 방역을 실시하거나 차량을 통제하는 등의 차별적인 방역지역과 방역전략을 설정할 때, 그 근거와 보완대책 마련에 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
