  • Aircraft hydraulic oil reservoirs made with aluminum 7075 have an anodized coating to enable airtightness and corrosion resistance. To maintain a stable oil pressure, the internal surface roughness of the reservoir should be less than approximately 0.2 ㎛. To this end, precision polishing must be performed. However, ensuring the processing quality is challenging, as most polishing operations are performed manually, owing to which, the inner surface roughness is not uniform, and the product quality is irregular. Therefore, we developed a special superfinishing machine to realize the efficient inner polishing of an aircraft hydraulic oil reservoir, by using an abrasive film to improve the process throughput and uniformity. In the experiment involving the superfinishing of an anodized aluminum 7075 cylinder specimen by using the proposed machine, a higher surface roughness than that achieved in the repetitive manual polishing process could be realized.

  • Recently the bioremediation technology has been widely used to recover the oil contaminated environments The application of bioremediation agents to oil polluted environments became common and thus many kinds of commercial products were imported into domestic market. In Korea, howcver. the standardization of bioremediation products quality is not yet established and results of efficacy test .ire scarce. In this study five oil spill bioremediation commercial products including microbial inoculants and en'cyme agents are tested for the oil degradation rate. From the results most products shows the strong oil emulsifying phenomena due to the contained chemical oil dispersant and the low oil degradation rate. Product D inhibited the oil degradability of microorganisms even in the natural sea water. From these results it could be concluded that in the near future the laboratory protocol and standardization of products quality for bioremediarion agents should be prepared to activate the effective application of bioremediation technology in Korea.

  • Selection of optimum reaction conditions during deoxygenation process of palm oil is essential factor to obtain the maximum yield of bio-jet fuel. In this context, the deoxygenation of palm oil was carried out in a fixed bed reactor with an internal diameter of 1 inch loaded with a 1 wt.% $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The composition of the organic liquid product(OLP), which can be utilized as a transportation fuel through the upgrading process, was analyzed by a gas chromatography method. The palm oil/hydrogen ratio and hydrogen pressure in the feed affected the decarboxylation(DCB) and hydrodeoxygenation(HDO) reactions, resulting in a change in the composition of the OLP. As the reaction temperature increased, the continuous cracking reaction of the deoxygenation product was promoted and the product composition in the $C_5{\sim}C_{14}$ region was increased. Thus, the results can help to understand the characteristics of deoxidation reaction of palm oil as well as the subsequent process, hydro-upgrading, to obtain the maximum yield of bio-jet fuel.

  • Pyrolysis of polypropylene(PP) Was performed to find the effects of the pyrolysis temperature(425, 450, 475 and $500^{\circ}C$) and the pyrolysis time(35, 50 and 65minutes), respectively. Conversion and liquid yield obtained during PP pyrolysis continuously increased with the pyrolysis temperature( up to $500^{\circ}C$) and the pyrolysis time(up to 65minutes), especially these were more sensitive to the pyrolysis time at $425^{\circ}C$ than other pyrolysis temperatures. Each liquid product formed during the pyrolysis was classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and wax according to the distillation temperature based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. The liquid products of PP pyrolysis up to $450^{\circ}C$ were almost same fractions($26{\pm}3$wt.% gasoline, $20{\pm}2$wt.% kerosene and $23{\pm}2$wt.% light oil) except wax($3{\sim}13$wt.%). On the other hand, the pyrolysis of PP from $475^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$ produced $26{\pm}3$wt.% wax, $24{\pm}1$wt.% gasoline, $18{\pm}1$wt.% kerosene and $16{\pm}1$wt.% light oil. After all, the main liquid product changed from gasoline to wax with increasing pyrolysis temperature.

  • The low temperature pyrolysis of ABS resin has been carried out in a batch reactor under the atmospheric pressure. The effect of the reaction temperature on the yield of pyrolytic oils has been determined in the present study. The oil products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the petroleum product quality standard of Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The conversion reaches 80% after 60 min at $500^{\circ}C$ in the pyrolysis of ABS resin. The amount of the final product was ranked as gas heavy oil > gasoline > gas oil > kerosen based on the yield. The yields of heavy oil and gas oil increase with an increase in the reaction time and temperature.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of shifting errors reported in military tracked vehicles and to improve related quality to prevent recurrence. Methods: A systematic disassembly and inspection of the transmission is carried out and an experimental simulation is conducted to reproduce the shifting error phenomenon. Electrical characteristic tests are subsequently performed and microscopic observation is also carried out on the disassembled connector parts such as pins and fractured surfaces. Results: Oil contamination and swelling deformation are observed in the connector to the vehicle due to oil leakage of its counterpart connector to the transmission. This causes electrical contact failure between both connectors in the fastened state, and it is found that shifting error of the tracked vehicle could occur subsequently. To prevent the recurrence of this phenomenon, comprehensive quality improvement is conducted including product improvement of the wiring harness assembly and strengthening activities for quality control and preventive maintenance. Conclusion: This study is expected to be helpful as a prior case study for cause analysis and recurrence prevention in the event of similar cases in the future.

  • Using Na2CO3 versus NaCl as chemical activator, we compared the quality of activated carbon produced from oil palm fronds as raw material. These activators were selected for comparison because both are readily available and are environmentally friendly. In the manufacturing, we used Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-1995) parameters. For the quality comparison, we determined activated-carbon yield, moisture, ash, volatiles, and fixed-carbon contents; and adsorption capacity of iodine. The best characteristics, assessed by morphological surface analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral analysis, were observed in the carbon activated by Na2CO3 at an activator concentration of 10% and carbonization temperature of 400 ℃. The results were as follows: activated-carbon yield, 84%; water content, 8.80%; ash content, 2.20%; volatiles content, 14.80%; fixed-carbon content, 68.60%; and adsorption capacity of iodine, 888.51 mg/g. Identification using the FTIR spectrophotometer showed the presence of the functional groups O-H, C=O, C=C, C-C, and C-H in the Na2CO3-activated carbon.

  • Domestic vehicle companies have been selling genuine engine oils with higher price than that of the same grade of regular engine oils. In this study, our group investigated the properties of engine oils for 14 kinds of the genuine and equivalent regular engine oil (KS product) species under a fresh as well as used condition recovered after 10,000 km driving. From analytic results, genuine engine oils had similar physical properties to regular engine oils under the fresh condition. But recovered regular engine oils had better properties in lubricity, kinematic viscosity and acid number change than those of recovered genuine engine oils.
