PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of videoconferencing-based telerehabilitation exercise program on the gait, knee function, and quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Forty-eight subjects, who were diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee by the radiologic findings, history, and a physical examination, were assigned randomly to a Control group, Experiment group I, and Experiment group II. The control group did not perform any exercise program and were educated in understanding and managing the disease of knee osteoarthritis for only one hour. Experimental groups I and II were provided with an exercise guidelines book for knee osteoarthritis, and the same exercise programs were conducted by face-to-face visits and non-face-to-face using telerehabilitation for eight weeks, respectively. To verify the effectiveness of each exercise program, the gait speed, knee disability index, and health related quality of life were measured. All assessments were conducted twice before and after the intervention. RESULTS: The participants who underwent both face-to-face and telerehabilitation exercise programs showed an improved gait speed, knee function, and health-related quality of life. In particular, there was no significant difference between the telerehabilitation exercise group and the direct face-to-face exercise group in improving the knee joint function and health related quality of life. CONCLUSION: A these findings the telerehabilitation exercise program for patients with knee osteoarthritis can alternate or supplement the face-to-face exercise program. Therefore, the telerehabilitation exercise program should be used not only as a substitute supplement program but also as an intervention for various diseases.
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a 'overcoming cancer program' on knowledge, self efficacy, and quality of life, therapeutic compliance for patients with lung cancer. Method: Research design of this study was a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study. Subjects for this study were 16 lung cancer patients for the control group, and 12 lung cancer patients for the experimental group. The experimental group participated in the program once a week for 4 weeks. Data were collected before and after the program. Nonparametric statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: The results of this study were as follows: In the pretest, there were no significant differences in general characteristics, knowledge, self efficacy and quality of life between the two groups. In the posttest, there were significant differences in knowledge, self efficacy between the experimental and the control groups. But there were no significant differences in therapeutic compliance and quality of life between the two groups. Conclusion: From the results above, it can be concluded that program was effective to improve knowledge and self-efficacy for patients with lung cancer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a comprehensive rehabilitation program on physical function, immune response, fatigue and quality of life in mastectomy patients. Method: The subjects included fifty-five patients with breast cancer (27 in the control group and 28 in the experimental group). The subjects in the experimental group participated in a comprehensive rehabilitation program for10 weeks, which was composed of 1 session of education, 2 sessions of stress management, 2 sessions of exercise, and 1 session of peer support group activity per week. Result: The results revealed anincrease in shoulder extension, abduction, external rotation, and internal rotation of the affectedupper extremity, and in shoulder extension and abduction of the healthy upper extremity. Also an increase in quality of life and a decrease in fatigue were significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group. However, the results revealed that the natural killer cell ratio of the experimental group increased but there was no significant difference from that of the control group. Conclusion: The 10-week comprehensive rehabilitation program showed a large affirmative effect on physical function, fatigue and quality of life of breast cancer patients after a mastectomy.
The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the Self Efficacy Promotion and Exercise Training Program to decrease anxiety and depression and to increase the quality of life for kidney transplant recipients. The subjects were selected randomly among the patients who underwent renal transplant at three major transplantation hospitals in Seoul, Korea. The observed subjects in this study consisted of 56 patients who had renal transplantations between one to twelve months prior to this study. The patients did not take any regular physical exercise. This study was carried out between November, 1999 and March, 2000. The study groups were divided into 3 groups; exercise training group (n=16), self efficacy group (n=18) and control group (n=22). The exercise training group received self efficacy promotion and exercise training program for 12 weeks. The self efficacy group received self efficacy promotion education, but no exercise training was given. The control group was not offered any education. The anxiety, depression and quality of life were evaluated 3 times, before the experiment, after 8 weeks and after 12 weeks. The data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, ANOVA and $Scheff\acute{e}$ test. The results were as follows: 1. After the experiment, anxiety and depression scores of the exercise training group and self efficacy group were more significantly decreased than those of the control group (p=.05). 2. After the experiment, the quality of life score of the exercise training group and self efficacy group were more significantly increased than those of the control group (p=.05). This study showed that the Self Efficacy and Exercise Training Programs were effective. Therefore, it is expected that the Self Efficacy Promotion and Exercise Training Program could be widely applied as an effective independent nursing intervention to decrease anxiety and depression and to increase quality of life for kidney transplant recipients.
Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of a Program Promoting Efficacy Expectation, as to whether the program improved self-efficacy, health promotion behavior and quality of life for rural middle-aged women. The program was based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory and Pender's health promoting behavior theory. Method: The research design was a quasi experimental, nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected from August 25 to December 7, 2000. The participants were 40 to 59 year old women who resided on Je-ju island. Among the 83 participants, 43 were assigned to experimental group and the rest to the control group. Results: The level of self efficacy and the degree of health promoting behavior of participants in the experimental group was higher than those in the control group (t=12.82, p=0.0001; t=14.13, p=0.0001). Also, the level of quality of life in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (t=12.02, p=0.0001). Conclusion: The Efficacy Expectation Promotion Program was an effective nursing intervention for improving self-efficacy, health promotion behavior and quality of life. Therefore, when nurses are planning programs directed at improving health promotion behavior in rural middle aged women, they should consider the concept of self-efficacy.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dance sports on physiological variables, depression and quality of life in the elderly. The study was performed on a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design for 47 elderly, who were conveniently assigned to experimental group and control group. The experimental group were selected from D-welfare facility and the control group were selected from G-elderly church club in G-city. The data were collected from April 2, 2001 to June 30, 2001, and analyzed by frequency, $x^2$-test, t-test and paired t-test using SAS/PC program. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. The first hypothesis, "the experimental group would have improved physiological variables than the control group.". 1-1. The hypothesis, "the experimental group would have lower blood pressure than the control group" was rejected. 1-2. The hypothesis, "the experimental group would have lower heart rate than the control group" was supported(t=-2.031, p=0.048). 1-3. The hypothesis, "the experimental group would have higher peripheral vessel $O_2$ Saturation than the control group" was rejected. 2. The second hypothesis, "the experimental group would have lower depression score than the control group" was supported(t=2.832, p=0.006). 3. The third hypothesis, "the experimental group would have higher quality of life score than the control group" was supported(t=2.604, p=0.012). After 12 weeks of dance sports program, it was shown that the program was effective to improve the physiological varibles, reduce depression and improve quality of life.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and to determine the effects of an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: Subjects consisted of 58 CAD patients (experimental group: 30, control group: 28). The experimental group participated in an integrated symptom management program for 6 months which was composed of tailored education, stress management, exercise, diet, deep breathing, music therapy, periodical telephone monitoring and a daily log. The control group received the usual care. Results: The experimental group significantly decreased symptom experiences and the level of LDL compared to the control group. The experimental group significantly increased self care activity and quality of life compared to the control group. Although no significant difference was found in cardiac recurrence, the experimental group had fewer recurrences. Conclusion: These results suggest that an integrated symptom management program for prevention of recurrent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention can improve symptom aggravation, recurrent rate, self care activity and quality of life. Nursing interventions are needed to maintain and further enhance the quality of life of these patients and the interventions should be implemented in the overall transition period.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a home based exercise program for patients with stomach cancer who were undergoing oral chemotherapy. Methods: The home-based exercise program was developed from the study findings of Winningham (1990) and data from the Korea Athletic Promotion Association (2007). The home-based exercise program consisted of 8 weeks of individual exercise education and exercise adherence strategy. Participants were 24 patients with stomach cancer who were undergoing oral chemotherapy following surgery in 2007 or 2008 at a university hospital in Seoul. Patients were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (11) or control group (13). The effects of the homebased exercise program were measured by level of cancer related fatigue, NK cell ratio, anxiety, and quality of life. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 13.0 version. Results: The degree of cancer related fatigue and anxiety in the experimental group decreased compared to the control group. The NK cell ratio and the degree of quality of life of experimental group increased while that of the control group decreased. Conclusion: This study result indicate the importance of exercise and provide empirical evidence for continuation of safe exercise for patients with cancer during their chemotherapy.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the ICPP on cognitive function, level of depression, and quality of life of older adults. Methods: This study follows a pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group, quasi-experimental design. The subjects of this study were elderly people aged 65 years or older registered at comprehensive social welfare centers. A total of 42 participants took part: 21 in the control group and 21 in the experimental group. Data collection was conducted between September 18, 2017 and November 2, 2017. The ICPP was conducted for the experimental group for 6 weeks as a group program (3-4 times a week, for a total of 20 sessions). The control group underwent a simple exercise program for 6 weeks (once a week, for a total of 6 sessions). Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement in their cognitive function, level of depression, and quality of life. Conclusion: These results suggest that the ICPP helps improve cognitive function, alleviates depression, and increases quality of life, and is expected to be an effective nursing intervention for older adults.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Mindfulness Meditation program on sleep, depression and quality of life in the institutionalized elderly women.
