Analysis of Joint Transmit and Receive Antenna Selection in CPM MIMO Systems

  • In wireless communications, antenna selection (AS) is a widely used method for reducing comparable cost of multiple RF chains in MIMO systems. As is well known, most of literatures on combining AS with MIMO techniques concern linear modulations such as phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The combination of CPM and MIMO has been considered an optimal choice that can improve its capacity without loss of power and spectrum efficiency. The aim of this paper is to investigate joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) in CPM MIMO systems. Specifically, modified incremental and decremental JTRAS algorithms are proposed to adapt to arbitrary number of selected transmit or receive antennas. The computational complexity of several JTRAS algorithms is analyzed from the perspective of channel capacity. As a comparison, the performances of bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency are evaluated via simulations. Moreover, computational complexity of the JTRAS algorithms is simulated in the end. It is inferred from discussions that both incremental JTRAS and decremental JTRAS perform close to optimal JTRAS in BER and spectral efficiency. In the sense of practical scenarios, adaptive JTRAS can be employed to well tradeoff performance and computational complexity.

  • This paper derives the symbol error probability for quadrature amplitude modulation(QAM) with L-fold space diversity in Rayleigh fading channels. Two combining techniques, maximal ratio combining(MRC) and selection combining(SC), are considered. The formula for MRC space diversity is obtained by averaging the symbol error probability of M-ary QAM in an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel over a chi-square distribution with 2L degrees of freedom. The obtained formula overcomes the limitations of the earlier work, which has been limited only to deriving the symbol error rate(SER) of QAM with two branch MRC space diversity. The formula for SC space diversity is obtained by averaging the symbol error probability of M-ary QAM in an AWGN channel over the distribution of the maximum signal-to noise ratio among all of the diversity channels for SC space diversity has been reported yet. Analytical results show that the probability of error decreases with the order of diversity gain per additional branch decreases as the number of branches becomes larger. On the other hand, the performance of 16 QAM with MRC becomes much better than that of SC as the number of branches becomes larger. By giving the order of diversity, L, and the number of signal points, M, we have been able to obtain the SER performance of QAM with general space diversity. These results can be used to determine the order of diversity to achieve the desired SER in land mobile communication system employing QAM modulation.

A Study on Performance Requirement of I/Q Impairments for RF Implementation in W-CDMA User Equipment (W-CDMA 사용자장치 RF 구현을 위한 I/Q 열화성능요구규격 연구)

  • This paper deals with performance degradations caused by RF I/Q impairments such as amplitude mismatch and phase mismatch in W-CDMA user equipment which uses QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation. The impacts of I/Q impairments on the BER(Bit Error Rate) are analyzed by using the variations of adjacent symbol distance. The BER versus amplitude mismatch and phase mismatch with QPSK constellation is reviewed through Matlab simulation. Performance degradation produced by RF I/Q impairments is measured with the implemented RF transceiver and modulation/demodulation test equipments through EVM(Error Vector Magnitude). The minimum performance requirements of amplitude mismatch and phase mismatch in W-CDMA user equipment are presented from the point of hardware implementation and the test method of the impairments is also included.

  • This paper presents bit splitting methods to apply multilevel modulation to iterative codes such as turbo code, low density parity check code and turbo product code. Log-likelihood ratio method splits multilevel symbols to bits using the received in-phase and quadrature component based on Gaussian approximation. However it is too complicate to calculate and implement hardware due to exponential and log calculation. therefore this paper presents Euclidean, MAX and Sector method to reduce the high complexity of LLR method. We propose optimal bit splitting method for three iterative codes.

  • 본 논문에서는 멀티 코드 CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access)시스템에서 고속의 멀티미디어 서비스를 지원하기 위해 정보 데이터열을 QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) 부호화하는 방법을 제안한다. 송신 구조는 입력 비트를 정진폭 다중부호 이진직교 변조(Constant amplitude code biorthogonal modulation: 이하 CACB라 칭함)로 부호화하여 전송 심볼의 크기를 일정하게 하고 이렇게 이진화된 신호를 QAM 부호화하여 전송속도를 높인다. 복조기의 구조는 수신된 신호로부터 QAM 연판정기 블록을 거쳐 생성된 신호를 CACB 복호화기를 거쳐 데이터를 복조해 낸다. 제안된 시스템은 기존의 멀티 코드 방식에 비해 대역폭 효율을 크게 개선시킬 수 있어 전송 속도를 많이 향상시킬 수 있고, 멀티 코드 방식을 기반으로 하기 때문에 디지털 가전기기나 3세대 이동통신과, WPAN과 관련된 무선 네트워크 응용과 같은 미래의 고속의 무선 멀티미디어 서비스를 지원하기에 적합하다.

  • A spectral and power efficient modulation technique, named Compact Superposed Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (Compact-SQAM), is introduced. The performance of Compact-SQAM system, in a Linearly and nonlinearly amplified single and multicarrier environment, in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN), intersymbol interference(ISI), timing jitter and adjacent channel interference (ACI), is experimentally analyzed via computer simulation. Various channel conditions, such as channel spacing, between the main and adjacent channels and fade depth on the desired main channel, are examined. Our result shows that Compact-SQAM, and better P(e) performance that other modems using simple Butteroworth type postdetection receive filters. Especially, Compact-SQAM modem achieves higher efficiency of frequency utilization and better P(e) performance than other modems in the severly bandlimited nonlinear multicarrier channels.

Analysis on Spectral Regrowth of Bandwidth Expansion Module by Quadrature Modulation Error in Digital Chirp Generator (디지털 첩 발생기에서의 직교 변조 오차에 의한 대역 확장 모듈에서의 스펙트럴 재성장 분석)

  • This paper presents an effective method to achieve the wideband waveform for high resolution SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) using the frequency multiplication technique. And also this paper analyzes the root causes for the spectral regrowth due to 3rd-order intermodulation in chirp bandwidth expansion scheme using quadrature modulator and frequency multipliers. The amplitude and phase imbalance requirement are defined based on the simulation results in terms of quadrature channel imbalance. This minimizes the degradation of range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio. The wideband chirp generator using the frequency multiplier and memory map scheme was manufactured and the compensation technique was presented to reduce the spectral regrowth of SAR waveform by minimizing the amplitude and phase imbalance. After I and Q channel imbalance adjustment, the carrier level reduces -28.7 dBm to -53.4 dBm. Chirp signal with 150 MHz bandwidth at S-band expands to 600 MHz bandwidth at X-band. The sidelobe levels are reduced by about 8 to 9 dB by compensating the amplitude balance between I and Q channels.

  • We proposed several systems for 1Giga bit Modem. The first, Binary ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) system has a high speed shutter transmitter and no IF(Intermediate Frequency) receiver only by symbol synchronization. The advantage of proposed system is that circuitry is very simple without IF process. The disadvantage of proposed system are that line spectrum occurs interference to other channels, and enhancement to 4-level system is impossible due to its large SNR degradation. The second, Binary phase modulation system has a high speed shutter transmitter and IF-VCO(IF-Voltage Controlled Oscillator) control by base-band phase rotation. Polarity of shutter window is changed by the binary data. The window should be narrow same as above ASK. The advantage of proposed system is which error rate performance is superior. The disadvantage of proposed system are that Circuitry is more complex, narrow pull-in range of receiver caused by VCO and spectrum divergence by the non-linear amplifier. The third, 4-QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation)system has a nyquist pulse transmitter and IF-VCO control by symbol clock. The advantage of proposed system are that signal frequency band is a half of 1GHz, reliable pull-in of VCO and possibility of double speed transmission(2Gbps) by keeping 1GHz frequency-band. The disadvantage of proposed system are that circuit complexity of pulse shaping and spectrum divergence by the non-linear amplifier.

  • MB-OFDM (Multiband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) UWB (ultra wide band) system uses DCM (dual carrier modulation) scheme to achieve high-data rate transmission. The basic idea of DCM is that to transmit the 4 bits more reliably two 16-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) symbols are used and the two 16-QAM sysmbols are allocated to each subcarrier of OFDM with maximum-distance. In the case of using the DCM, if one 16-QAM symbol is broken by deep fadding channel, a receiver can detect the transmitted signal by using another 16-QAM symbol. In the conventional ML(maximum likelihood) decision scheme, since the receiver does not use the CSI (channel state information), loss in diversity can not be reduced. In this paper, we propose improved soft-decision scheme with CSI for higher performance of MB-OFDM UWB systemn.

  • In this paper, we present the performance of iterative decoding with a Turbo decoder and a M-ary QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) demapper. The demappers are designed with Max-Log-MAP algorithm and it's approximated one. In addition, we provide implementing block for the approximated algorithm. From the results of computer simulations, the approximated algorithm of the Max-Log-MAP has little bit worse than the Max-Log-MAP but suggests low complexity for practical implementation.
