  • Reorganization is essential part of data base maintenanc work and the reasonable reorganization points can be determined from the trade-off between reorganization cost and performance degradation. There has been many reorganization models so far, but none of these models have assumed nonlinear search cost function. This paper presents the existensions of two existing linear reorganization models for the case where the search cost function is quadratic. The higher performance of these extended models was shown in quadratic search cost function case.

  • Traditionally one convex cost function for each generation is assumed in economic power dispatch. However, it is more realistic to represent the cost function as a piecewise quadratic function rather than one convex function. This paper presents evolutionary algorithm approaches to solve the problems of economic power dispatch with quadratic cost functions and piecewise quadratic cost functions. To improve GA, EP and ES characteristics. optimization methods combining GA with ES and EP with ES are proposed. The results for the proposed algorithms are compared with those of numerical method and show the better solutions in the ELD problem.

  • MPC or model predictive control is representative of control methods which are able to handle physical constraints. Closed-loop stability can therefore be ensured only locally in the presence of constraints of this type. However, if the system is neutrally stable, and if the constraints are imposed only on the input, global aymptotic stability can be obtained; until recently, use of infinite horizons was thought to be inevitable in this case. A globally stabilizing finite-horizon MPC has lately been suggested for neutrally stable continuous-time systems using a non-quadratic terminal cost which consists of cubic as well as quadratic functions of the state. The idea originates from the so-called small gain control, where the global stability is proven using a non-quadratic Lyapunov function. The newly developed finite-horizon MPC employs the same form of Lyapunov function as the terminal cost, thereby leading to global asymptotic stability. A discrete-time version of this finite-horizon MPC is presented here. The proposed MPC algorithm is also coded using an SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) algorithm, and simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the method.

  • This paper discusses a paradox in an Indefinite Quadratic transportation Problem. Here, the objective function is the product of two linear functions. A paradox arises when the transportation problem admits of a total cost which is lower than the optimum cost, by transporting larger quantities of goods over the same route. A sufficient condition for the existence of a paradox is established. Paradoxical Range of flow is obtained for any given flow in which the corresponding objective function value is less than the optimum value of the given transportation problem. It is illustrated with the help of a numerical example.

  • In this study, an adaptive evolutionary computation(AEC), which uses adaptively a genetic algorithm having global searching capability and an evolution strategy having local searching capability with different methodologies, is suggested. This paper develops AEC for solving ELD problem with piecewise quadratic cost function. Numerical results show that the proposed AEC can provide accurate dispatch solutions within reasonable time for the ELD problem with piecewise quadratic cost function.

  • In this paper, we consider the robust pole assignment and the upper bound of quadratic cost function for the linear systems with time-varying uncertainy. The considered uncertainties are both the norm bounded unstructured case and the structured case that has the matrix polytope type uncertain structure. We derve conditions that guarantee the robust pole assignment inside a disk in the L.H.P. and the robust stability. Also, we derive the upper bound of quadratic cost for thil pole assigned systems. Finally, we show the usefulness of our results by an example.

  • This paper presents an application of optimization method for efficient operation in micro grid. For operational efficiency, the objective function in a diesel generator consists of the fuel cost function similar to the cost functions used for the conventional fossil-fuel generating plants. The wind turbine generator is modeled by the characteristics of variable output. The cost function of fuel cell plant considers the efficiency of fuel cell. Particle swarm optimization(PSO) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP) are used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation. Also, from the results this paper presents the way to attend power markets which can buy and sell power from upper lever grids by connecting a various generation resources to micro grid.

  • In this paper, we present a new cost function for subband block adaptive algorithm and block conjugate gradient algorithm for noise cancellation of acoustic signal. For the cost function, we process the subband signals with data blocks for each subbands and recombine it a whole data block. After these process, the cost function has a quadratic form in adaptive filter coefficients, it guarantees the convergence of the suggested block conjugate gradient algorithm. And the block conjugate gradient algorithm which minimizes the suggested cost function has better performance than the case of full-band block conjugate gradient algorithm, the computer simulation results of noise cancellation show the efficiency of the suggested algorithm.

  • We consider a proportionate flow shop problem with controllable processing times. The objective is to minimize the sum of total completion time and total compression cost, in which the cost function of compressing the processing times is non-decreasing concave. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time by reducing it to a polynomially solvable 0-1 unconstrained quadratic program.

  • In this paper, a new procedure for selecting weighting matrices in linear discrete time quadratic optimal control problem (LQ-problem) is proposed. In LQ-problems, the quadratic weighting matrices are usually decided on trial and error in order to get a good response. But using the proposed method, the quadratic weights are decided in such a way that all poles of the closed loop system are located in a desired region for good responses as well as for stability and values of the quadratic cost function are kept less then a specified value.
