An intertidal marine benthic algal vegetation and vertical distribution at Kangnung and it’s vicinity, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method. Marine algae identified from the area were 116 species; 15 green, 31 brown and 70 red algae. The dominant species were Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Undaria pinnatifida, Dictyota dichotoma, Gelidium amansii, Corallina pilulifera, Carpopeltis affinis, Grateloupia filicina, Pachymeniopsis elliptica and Chondrus ocellatus at study sites. The vertical distribution of intertidal marine algae was divided into three distinct zones. They were characterized by Porphyra tenera at the upper, Enteromorpha spp. and Ulva pertusa at the middle, and Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fusiformis and Pachymeniopsis elliptica at the lower zones, respectively. The vertical distribution of subtidal zone algae were characterized by Laminaria spp. at 15m depth and Kjellmaniella crassifolia at 15 to 25 m depths, whereas Agarum cribrosum was dominant at the lower zone than 25 m depth.
The clonal seaweed Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) forms extensive stands at low intertidal elevations on wave-sheltered rocky shores of the North Atlantic. This study investigates if this bushy alga acts as a foundation species in such habitats. The abundance (percent cover) of C. crispus, all other algae, and invertebrates was measured in 390 quadrats spanning 350 km of coast in Nova Scotia, Canada. In these low-intertidal habitats, fucoid algae are the largest organisms and can form extensive canopies, but their cover was unrelated to benthic species richness and to C. crispus cover. Species richness, however, increased with C. crispus cover from low to intermediate cover values, showing little change towards full C. crispus cover. Species composition (a combined measure of species identity and their relative abundance) differed between quadrats with low (0-1%) and high (60-100%) cover of C. crispus. High C. crispus cover was associated to more invertebrate species but fewer algal species than low C. crispus cover. However, the average abundance of algal and invertebrate species occurring in both cover groups was often higher under high C. crispus cover, contributing to a higher average richness at the quadrat scale. Overall, only 16% of the observed variation in species richness was explained by C. crispus cover. Therefore, this study suggests that C. crispus acts as a foundation species but with a moderate influence.
A subtidal marine benthic algal vegetation at Ulleungdo Island, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method at seven stations in May and August 2014. The total number of marine algal species was 148 species composed of the green algae of 12 species, the brown algae of 40 species and the red algae of 96 species. Mean biomass in dry weight was $94.8g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in study sites, $98.1g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in upper tidal level, and $86.6g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in middle level. The R/P and (R+C)/P value reflecting flora characteristic were 1.9 and 2.3, respectively. Three groups produced by cluster analysis, one including sites Neunggeol, Daepung, Jukdo, second including sites Gongam, Ssangjeongcho and the other including sites Gwaneum, Hangnam, showed meaningful difference in similarity (about 40%), each other. The number of marine algal species and biomass in Ulleungdo Island area were markedly reduced comparing that in the previous studies. This result may suggest probably change of algal vegetation in future, considering the physical and chemical pollutions loaded in the coastal marine environment of this area.
The purpose of this study is on identifying the restoration guidelines of supplementary village grove and villageside forest in case of Neunggil village in Jinan county of Korea. These forests were managed very well before industrialization by village residents in order to obtain fuels and organic fertilizers traditionally. But recently, these forests were abandoned by using natural gas, oil and chemical fertilizer. Therefore, species diversity of these forests was downward and traditional rural landscape was lost. Accordingly, this study suggested the restoration guidelines of these forests through restoring the relationship between man and nature. For this, vegetation map was made by quadrat method. And management guidelines of these forests were suggested by the analysis of vegetation map. Also, for the restoration of supplementary village grove, Miyawiki professor's method of Yokohama university through introducing potential natural vegetation was suggested.
Macroalgae are important primary producers in marine ecosystem. They don't only play an important role as bioindicators but also provide economic resources for humans. Seasonal and vertical variations in seaweed species composition and biomass were examined to determine the ecological status of seaweed beds around Udo, near Jeju Island. We obtained samples at two sites in the high-intertidal to subtidal zones using the quadrat method between June 2010 and May 2011. A total of 262 species were collected, including 31 green, 61 brown, and 170 red algae. The composition of algal species revealed a decrease in species growing in cold water in comparison with the list 20 years ago. The macroalgal mean biomass (g wet wt $m^{-2}$) was 3,476 g and 2,393 g from the two sites, respectively. Ecklonia cava had the greatest biomass at both sites. The seasonal dominant species by biomass at site 1 from the low-intertidal to 1-3 m depth of the subtidal zone was mostly comprised of thick-leathery form, such as Sargassum hemiphyllum, S. coreanum, and Ecklonia cava, whereas site 2 was comprised of the turf form, such as Chondrophycus intermedius, Chondracanthus intermedius, Dictyopteris prolifera, and Gelidium elegans. The current ecological status of the seaweed community in Udo is stable based on diversity and dominance indices.
To estimate seaweed biomass or standing crop, a nondestructive sampling can be beneficial because of not much destroying living plants and saving time in field works. We suggest a methodological procedure to estimate seaweed biomass per unit area in marine benthic habitats by using species-specific regression equations. Percent cover data are required from the field samplings for most species to convert them to weight data. However, for tall macroalgae such as kelps we need density data and their size (e.g., size class for subtidal kelps) of individuals. We propose that the field sampling should be done with 5 replicates of 50 cm x 50 cm quadrat at three zones of intertidals (upper, middle, lower) and three depth points (1, 5, 10 m) in subtidals. To obtain a reliable regression equation for a species, a substantial number of replicate is necessary from destructive samplings. The regression equation of a species can be further specified by different locality and different season, especially for the species with variable morphology temporally and spatially. Example estimation carried out in Onpyung, Jeju Island, Korea is provided to compare estimated values with real weight data.
At Koppl area, undamaged natural habitat of sundew, I have analysed interspecific affinities and community composition through mathematical method and important environmental factors. Interspecific affinities of the species with frequency of more than 5% in vegetation table were analysed through chi-square test and showed obvious group of Drosera rotundifolia, Vaccinium uliginosum, Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum angustifolium and 21 species. The result of ordination anlysis using DECORANA of VESPAN II showed eigenvalue of 0.6047 for axis I, 0.2024 for axis II and 0.0763 for axis Ⅲ. And it divided into 4 groups of quadrat number 1-5 for Sphagnum squarrosum-community, 6-10 for Crepis paludosa-community. 11-25 for Carex panicea-community and 26-35 for Scorpidium scorpioides-community. By the classification using TWINSPAN, the 7 areas divided into 2 groups of 1-10 and 11-35 at first level of division with high eigenvalue of 0.588 and indicator was Sphagnum squarrosum. At second level of division it divided into 4 groups as the results of DECORANA with eigenvalues of 0.268 and 0.423 and indicators were Pinguicula vulgaris and Scorpidium scorpioides. Microclimatic environment of studied area was low in temperature and high in humidity and soil environment showed high in field moisture capacity, acid, high organic matter content, low NO3 and K2O content, compare to normal soil, and high ground water level.

It is important to consider urban parks and greenery not only from the viewpoint of amenity or aesthetics but also from the viewpoint of biodiversity. In this study, we focused on bryophytes (mosses), and analyzed how existence of artificial structures in urban greeney, such as concrete curbs and stone walls, affect species diversity of bryophytes. Kyoto Gyoen in Kyoto City, western Japan, was selected as the study site. In consideration of kinds of substrates on which bryophytes grow, microhabitats of Kyoto Gyoen were divided into ten types including concrete curbs and stone walls. In each type of microhabitats, we selected the area where bryophyte diversity was highest, and established a quadrat for bryophyte flora survey. Our results showed that the number of bryophyte species and growth forms and the value of diversity indices on concrete curbs or stone walls were higher than the averages of those. The bryophyte species were divided into the four groups by TWINSPAN as follows: Group A (epiphyte species), Group B (rocky species), Group C (roadsides, grassland or forest species), and Group D (waterside species). Bryophytes classified into Group B (rocky species) were mainly recorded on concrete curbs or stone walls. It was considered that the existence of artificial structures (concrete curbs and stone walls) provided favorite habitats for the bryophytes classified into Group B (rocky species), which mainly grows on concrete or rocks, and enhanced species diversity of bryophytes in Kyoto Gyoen.
In this study I try to show some numerical analogy between Leibniz's binary system anc I-ching's symbolic system of duo rerum principia, imagines quator, octo figurae am 64 hexagrams. But, there is really a formal logical accordance in their symbolic foundations, on which are based especially the Wittgenstein's 16 truth-tables in his Tractatus-logico-philosophicus(5.101) am 16 hexagrams, as long as we interpret with the binary values 0 am 1, i.e. the Bi-Polarity, the logical tradition from J. Boole, G. Frege through B. Russell and AN. Whitehead to R. Wittgenstein. So, I argue that the historical and theoretical root of that tradition goes back to the debate between Bouvet and Leibniz about the mathematical structure of I-ching' symbols and the Leibnizian binary arithmetic. In the letter on 4. 11. 1701 from Peking to Leibniz, Bouvet wrote that the I-Ching's symbolism has an analogous structure with Leibniz's binary arithmetic. Corresponding to his suggestion, but without exact knowledge, in the letter of 2. January 1967 to the duke August in Braunschweig-Lueneburg-Wolfenbuettel had Leibniz shown already an original idea for the creation of the world with imago Dei which comes from binary progression, dark and light on water.
We surveyed the vegetation of an ecological landscape preservation area (legally protected conservation areas or national parks) and the surrounding areas of Mt. Cheonggye, Republic of Korea, to explore the conservation implications for preservation areas and surrounding transition areas. We calculated diversity indices to identify the properties of the preservation and surrounding areas that are relevant to conservation efforts. We then compared the plant community composition between the areas using field and quadrat surveys in the preservation and surrounding areas. The cover of the dominant species in all tree and herb layers was markedly higher in the preservation area than in the peripheral zones. The species richness indices were significantly higher in the preservation area than in the peripheral zones. Ordination using detrended canonical correspondence analyses showed that the cover of the dominant tree species and rocks could explain the distribution of plant species in the Cartesian space of the ordination. Our results demonstrate that physiognomically designated protected areas match well with ecological data based on diversity indices and ordination analyses and that disturbances in the areas surrounding the ecological landscape of preservation areas can have considerable impacts on plant diversity indices. Hence, the preservation and management of surrounding areas are essential conservation elements for protecting the entire ecological landscape of preservation areas.
