  • Ignition characteristics of a vertical solid fuel plate with block have been investigated experimentally. For low radiant heat flux, ignition does not occur in a vertical solid fuel plate without block. In the case with the block on a vertical fuel plate, however, ignition can occur by increasing the residence time and the time to absorb the incident radiation flux by fuel vapor in gas phase. The ignition occurs below block and the point varies according to the block location and the block height. As the block height increases, the block locates at higher position, and the hot wall temperature increases, the ignition delay time decreases. Also as the initial temperature of fuel plate rises, the ignition delay time of the solid fuel plate decreases. The temperature distribution of solid fuel plate with block is nearly proportional to the radiant heat flux distribution. Therefore, the effect temperature by natural convection heat transfer is of the same order as that of inhibition of temperature increase by pyrolysis.

  • Gas porosity which is a common defect in aluminum alloy casting, is also thought to be severer in aluminum alloy castings produced by lost foam process due to the pyrolysis of the polystyrene foam pattern during pouring. Fundamental experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of process variables such as the melt treatment, the cooling rate and pouring temperature on the density and mechanical properties in A356.2 castings with simple bar shape. The density of grain refined specimen was slightly lower than that of degassed one, but was higher than that of no treated one and that of shot ball packed specimen was higher than the other specimens. The tensile strength and elongation were in the ranges of $200{\sim}230MPa$ and $0.5{\sim}1.5%$ respectively. The density and hardness of lost foam cast specimens decreased with increase in pouring temperature.

  • We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes in a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by the thermal CVD usign $C_2H_2$ gas. Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, growth of carbon nanotubes has been achieved by several methods such as laser vaporization, arc discharge, and pyrolysis. In particular, growth of vertically aligned nanotubes is important to flat panel display applications. Recently, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been grown on glass by PECVD. Aligned carbon nanotubes can be also grown on mesoporous silica and Fe patterned porous silicon using CVD. In this paper, we demonstrate that carbon nanotubes can be vertically aligned on catalyzed Si substrate when the domain density of catalytic particles reaches a certain value. We suggest that steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically and each nonotubes are grown in bundle.

  • Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate the structure of coal tar pitch heat-treated up to $3000^{\circ}C$ by using 514.5 run Ar ion laser line. Four critical temperature ranges were found on pyrolyzing coal tar pitch, which correspond to four distinct processes from disordered carbons to the well-ordered graphite structure. The range of heat treat temperature (HTT) below $1000^{\circ}C$ corresponds to gas evolution during the pyrolysis of coal tar pitch. Above the HTT are correlated to rearrangements of enlarged molecules, growth of the molecules along the direction of plane, finally stacking in the normal direction of the plane, in the respective HTT ranges of 1000-2000, above 2000 and $2500-3000^{\circ}C$.

  • The silica containing carbon (C-SiO$_2$) membranes were fabricated using poly(imide siloxane) (PIS) having -CO- swivel group. The characteristics of porous C-SiO$_2$ structures prepared by the pyrolysis of poly(imide siloxane) were related with the micro-phase separation between the imide block and the siloxane block. Furthermore, the nitrogen adsorption isotherms of the CMS and the C-SiO$_2$ membranes were investigated to define the characteristics of porous structures. The C-SiO$_2$ membranes derived from PIS showed the type IV isotherm and possessed the hysteresis loop, which was associated with the mesoporous carbon structures, while the CMS membranes derived from PI showed the type I isotherm. For the molecular sieving probe, the C-SiO$_2$ membranes pyrolyzed at 550, 600, and 700$^{\circ}C$ showed the O$_2$ permeability of 924, 1076, and 367 Barrer (1 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-10/㎤(STP)cm/$\textrm{cm}^2$$.$s$.$cmHg) and O$_2$/N$_2$ selectivity of 9, 8, and 12.

  • Iron(Fe)-Molybdenum(Mo) alloyed nanoparticles and nanowires were produced by the chemical vapor condensation(CVC) process using the pyrolysis of iron pentacarbonyl($Fe(CO)_5$) and Molybdenum hexacarbonyl($Mo(CO)_6$). The influence of CVC parameter on the formation of nanoparticle, nanowire and size control was studied. The size of Fe-Mo alloyed nanoparticles can be controlled by quantity of gas flow. Also, Fe-Mo alloyed nanowires were produced by control of the work chamber pressure. Moreover, we investigated close correlation of size and morphology of Fe-Mo nanoparticles and nanowires with atomic quantity of inflow precursor into the electric furnace as the quantitative analysis. Obtained nanoparticles and nanowires were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

  • Vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) nano-materials such as carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers were directly grown on the surface of the stainless steel mesh pre-treated by reduction. The reduction of the stainless steel mesh by hydrogen formed small catalytic particles and large particles with bi-modal distribution on the metal surface. When the VGCFs were synthesized on the reduced mesh, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were dominantly grown from the small catalytic particles without supplying hydrogen gas. However, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were dominantly grown from the large catalytic particles with hydrogen.

  • The pyrolysized carbon xerogel and aerogels were prepared from the sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) followed by the dry process under ambient pressure and supercritical carbon dioxide condition respectively. The thermal behaviour of RF polymer xerogel was investigated with TGA analyzer to correspond with the pyrolysis process. The surface properties such as particle size, morphology and the point of zero charge of the pyrolysized porous carbon aerogels were studied for the precious metal catalyst supported media. It was found that the volume of the polymer aerogel decreased because of the significant linear shrinkage and weight loss of polymer gel during the carbonization. The point of zero charge of the carbon aerogel pyrolysized at $1050^{\circ}C$ under inert gas flow was about 10.

  • Recently, the amount of thermosetting plastic wastes have increased with the production of reinforced plastic composites and causes serious environmental problems. The epoxy composites, one of the versatile thermosetting plastics with excellent properties, cannot be melted down and remolded as what is done in the thermoplastic industry. In this research, a series of experiments that recovers carbon fibers from carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites for train body was performed. We experimentally examined various decomposition processes and compared their decomposition efficiencies and mechanical property of recovered carbon fibers. For the prevention of tangle of recovered carbon fibers, each composites specimen was fixed with a Teflon supporter and no mechanical mixing was applied. Decomposition products were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), and universal testing machine (UTM). Carbon fibers could be completely recovered from decomposition process using nitric acid aqueous solution, liquid-phase thermal cracking and pyrolysis. The tensile strength losses of the recovered carbon fibers were less than 4%.

  • The flame-retardant (FR) treatments of wool fibers using Hexafluorozirconate/titanate salts and tetrabromophthalic anhydride can cause skin irritation and gas toxicity due to Zr and Br compounds respectively. A water-soluble polyfunctional cyclophosphazene derivative, synthesized through substitution reaction of Hexachloro cyclophosphazene and N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl] metacrylamide, was applied as a durable flame-retardant for wool fabrics. Also, a crosslinked structure was introduced to improve washing durability of the FR-wool, up to 10 laundering cycles, using Acrylamide(AAm) and Triacryloylhexahydrotriazine (TAHT) as a comonomer and a crosslinker respectively. The mole ratios of the TAHT and AAm concentrations compared to the Dichloro tetrakis{N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamido} cyclcophosphazene (DCTDCP) were optimized to 1.33 and 7.5 respectively. In addition, the pyrolysis and combustion properties of the FR wool were assessed using LOI, TGA and microcalorimetry suggesting a solid-phase FR mechanism.
