  • Explosively activated pyro-technic device is used to release exhausted rocket booster or payloads at prescribed times in the rocket's flight. It creates pyro-shock environment that rocket or payload components must survive. With the shock spectra acquired from flight data, laboratory test should be performed before flight to check whether all of component can sustain the shock environment. The pyro-shock environment simulation was created by the resonance fixture response to a projectile impact. Desired shock spectra is realized by adjusting the natural frequency of resonance plate and the velocity of impact hammer. This paper describes the development process of Pyro-shock testing machine, which is designed and tested by Korean engineers, to verify components of Korean Sounding Rocket(KSR-3) and the other Korean space vehicle. Both analytical and experimental techniques are introduced in this paper.

  • Pyro-shock measurement system in launch vehicle is necessary to validate structural robustness and to prepare environmental qualification criteria for launch vehicle systems. This paper describes design, development and function test of prototype pyro-shock recorder to be employed on KSLV-I in the near future. Due to the limitation of telemetry transmission rate, pyro-shock recorder acquires and stores the shock sensor data with high sampling rate in short period and sends the data to the KSLV-I telemetry system with lower data rate. Signal conditioning in pyro-shock recorder is designed to enhance signal-to-noise ratio through proper placement of anti-aliasing filter.

  • The purpose of the pyro-shock compliant joint is to isolated vibration using the compliant material in order to prevent the shock generated by pyro propulsion at the electronics equipment. The performance of the pyro-shock compliant joint can be determined by measuring bending natural frequency and transmissibility. In this study, we established the design requirements based on bending natural frequency and transmissibility results of the reference model. We developed a compliant material with sufficient shock compliant properties and a pyro-shock compliant joint for the new rocket. This results can be used to develop a pyro-shock compliant joint for any rocket using the compliant material and performance measurement.

  • A satellite is exposed to various impact environment until orbit entry. It is particularly undergoing the biggest impact by pyro shock, which is generated when the launch vehicle stages are separated or the satellite is separated from the launch vehicle. In this paper, due to the fact that the pyro shock is prerequisite for performing the test and verification on the ground, we developed an air-gun type shock tester for NEXTSat-1 shock test at the KAIST SaTReC along with the development of program introduced by LabVIEW software. The program operated in shock tester is consist of data measurement and analysis with the convenient implementation of user interface and its easy modification of the code.

  • Canister with composite sandwich panel has been suggested owing to its higher stiffness and strength over a weight for square shaped canisters. The pyro shock induced by a short time explosion inside a canister is generally considered to be the most severe source of load affecting on the entire structure. Therefore, in this study, the approach and modeling method to identify the effect of pyro shock on canister with composite sandwich panel in a numerical way were mainly discussed. Moreover, the verification was implemented through comparison with test results.

  • Explosive bolts are reliable and efficient mechanical fastening devices having the special feature of a built-in release. The disadvantage of explosive bolt lies in that it is based on the high explosive effect of a pyrotechnic charge. The aim of the present work is to propose a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. The pyro-lock using the pressure cartridge has the release characteristic without fragmentation and minimum pyro-shock. The present work is focused on the design, the interpretation of structure, the separation mechanism, separation force, and the results of various tests.

  • Most of the guided weapons have been kept and transferred at the launching tube and fired in case of necessity in these day. Launching tube is a kind of case to protect the guided weapons from external environments and conducted as a guide when they are fired. When we attached the guided weapons to launching tube we usually has used explosive bolt. Explosive bolts have been used explosives when they had to be separated. But when they are separated there are some bad effects; a flame, fragments and pyro-shock. Because of these bad effects there are many restriction to use bolt as joining devices to precision guided weapons. To solve these problems we invented ball type bolt. Unlike explosive bolt, ball type bolt is separated without a flame, fragments and pyro-shock. And it also has a good mechanical properties as much as those of explosive bolt.

  • Pyrotechnic separation devices have been widely used as holding and release mechanism for deployable appendage. However, pyro-shock can cause temporal or permanent damage on shock sensitive components such as electronics, mechanism, and brittle components. This study proposed a low-stiffness blade based passive shock absorber using a multi-layered stiffener laminated with viscoelastic acrylic tapes for reducing transmitted pyro-shock upon explosion of pyrotechnic separation devices. The multi-layered structure with viscoelastic tape has high-damping characteristics to effectively secure structural integrity of low-stiffness blades under the launch environment. The design effectiveness was verified through a shock test by dropping a pendulum. The structural integrity of the shock absorber under a launch environment was evaluated through structural analysis under load conditions with a deployable payload.

  • Pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is characterized as a transient vibration phenomena which shows large acceleration and high frequency range up to 10kHz during the operation of separation devices where explosives are used. During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyro-shock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, characteristics of pyroshock are introduced briefly, and PEEK washer shock absorber is applied for the reduction of pyroshock in the high frequency range. With some electronic devices, reduction characteristic of pyroshock using washer type shock absorber are studied. Random vibration tests are also performed for the verification of vibrational characteristics.

  • In this paper, a SDINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System) rapid initial alignment technique robust to the pyro-shock in multi-launch rocket system is proposed. The proposed method consists of three steps. Firth, transfer alignment is performed to estimate misalignment between MINS(Master INS) and SINS(Slave INS), and the estimated misalignment is written in the memory when transfer alignment is completed. Next, the pre-filtering process is performed to get rid of the acceleration error induced by launcher vibration. Finally, the horizontal alignment is performed to compensate misalignment variation caused by pyro-shock. We verified the performance of the proposed alignment method comparing with the conventional transfer alignment method. The simulation shows that the proposed initial alignment technique improves alignment performance.
