  • Payload fairing protects satellites and electrical equipments from the external environment. Payload fairing is jettisoned before satellite separation. Assembly frame for the separation of payload fairing were assembled with shear bolts. The role of shear bolts is to support structural load during flight and they are cut by explosion of pyro. The assembly frame which is connected by shear bolts is separated after the cutting of shear bolts. In this paper, structural tests and analysis were done for the design of the shear bolt. Compression, bending and shear load apply to the hardware including assembly frame. Test results showed that design of the shear bolt satisfied both structural strength for the support of flight load and required low strength for the cutting of shear bolts.

  • The non-explosive release device using jack mechanism is designed and fabricated for the small satellite. As a triggering actuator for the release device, a piezo rotory motor with torque of more than $1.7kgf{\cdot}cm$ is employed to guarantee stable activation. For performance tests of separation device, we conducted release time test, preload test and shock test. The device was operated within 1.172sec and activated stably under load of 45kgf. Maximum shock was measured as 18G that is much less than the pyro-separation device produces. We confirmed the possibility as a satellite separation device through above presented tests.

  • The feasibility study into the development of turbine spinners, which start up the turbo-pump, has been carried out and the design requirements and parameters ranges have been presented. Turbine spinners use the solid propellant as such composite propellant based AN compound with high energy plasticizers, coolants, and phase stabilizer which relieves a sensible volume change due to the phase transformation of AN near room temperature. Propellants which have a homing rate of $0.2{\sim}0.3\;mm/s$ and pressure exponent ranged from 0.3 to 0.6, showed stable burn-out in the standard motor tests. Both the magnitude of ignition energy and its thermal transfer mechanism have been proved to have a tangible effect on the ignition of the pyre starter, and the results of this study showed that a flame temperature of 1400K would be quite adequate to get a stable ignition for the AN composite propellant.

  • This study presents the practical design modification to improve the retracting performance of the pyro-typed high power pretensioner. 3 components of the pretensioner are redesigned and the usefulness of the design modification is verified by the experiment. During the pretensioning process, the gas blast generated from the gunpowder is transferred to the rack-pinion gear through the manifold. The rack-pinion gear is connected with the spool where the webbing is rolled up. According to the rotation of the pinion, the spool is turned and the webbing is winded. To help the gas blast flow well, the shape of the inner cross section of the manifold is changed. The spur gear design program is developed and used to find the best combination of the rack-pinion gear pair to increase the power transmission efficiency. The pinion guide is installed on the spool to prevent the vibration of the pinion. As a result of the experiment, the amount of the web retraction length is increased when every single design modification is applied. Therefore, the retracting performance of the pretensioner is considered to be improved if the presented design modifications are applied.

  • This study aims to address the fire characteristics of Double-skin facade using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). To end this, Double-skin facade was classified into the four structures, that is Box, Shaft-box, Corridor, Multistory, through PyroSim program which was based on FDS, and further each structure of fire characteristics were analyzed numerically as well as comparatively in the current study. This study also examined smoke movement, smoke density, smoke detectors, and visibility in order to closely identify the each structure of fire characteristics. The results of the study discovered that the Box structure did not significantly affect smoke which was rising in the other rooms, except for the fire room whereas the Corridor structure had positive effects on Double-skin facade horizontally. In addition, the Shaft-box structure showed the fastest vertical movement by means of the shaft, on the other hand, rising smoke influenced the other rooms as well. The Multistory structure along with rising smoke had a great impact on the other divided rooms in a vertical way.

  • A lead slowing down spectrometer (LSDS) is under development for analysis of isotopic fissile material contents in pyro-processed material, or spent fuel. Many current commercial fissile assay technologies have a limitation in accurate and direct assay of fissile content. However, LSDS is very sensitive in distinguishing fissile fission signals from each isotope. A neutron spectrum analysis was conducted in the spectrometer and the energy resolution was investigated from 0.1eV to 100keV. The spectrum was well shaped in the slowing down energy. The resolution was enough to obtain each fissile from 0.2eV to 1keV. The detector existence in the lead will disturb the source neutron spectrum. It causes a change in resolution and peak amplitude. The intense source neutron production was designed for ~E12 n's/sec to overcome spent fuel background. The detection sensitivity of U238 and Th232 fission chamber was investigated. The first and second layer detectors increase detection efficiency. Thorium also has a threshold property to detect the fast fission neutrons from fissile fission. However, the detection of Th232 is about 76% of that of U238. A linear detection model was set up over the slowing down neutron energy to obtain each fissile material content. The isotopic fissile assay using LSDS is applicable for the optimum design of spent fuel storage to maximize burnup credit and quality assurance of the recycled nuclear material for safety and economics. LSDS technology will contribute to the transparency and credibility of pyro-process using spent fuel, as internationally demanded.

  • Explosive bolt is one of separation device that uses high explosive charge, and is separated by pressure formed by an explosion and the resulting shock waves. Explosive bolt having such a mechanism would have to be designed to minimize shock and debris formation generated during separation. In this study, separation tests were carried out with distance as variable for restraining the explosive bolt (Air Gap). Bolt release and its separating shape with variation of air gap is observed, and we used accelerometer to measure the shock wave transmitted through a bound object. In addition, separation behavior of explosive bolt is analyzed using ANSYS AUOTODYN program. By comparing the results of previously performed experiments and analysis, we could confirm the effects of air gap to the release behavior of explosive bolt, and decide optimum constraining environment for specific separation bolts.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis of the surface gas temperature on turbine blades has been performed to investigate the temperature profiles characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine driven by high temperature and pressure gas of pyro-starter with two different types of turbine blade edge shape. In order to examine the surface gas temperature on turbine blades at initial starting, computations tlave been carried out at several turbine rotational speeds in the range of $0{\sim}10,000$ rpm for each type of turbine edge shape. "Sharp" edge and "Round" edge types were taken as the turbine edge shape factor. As turbine rotational speed increased, the average temperature of turbine blades was further decreased. It was also found that the surface temperature of turbine blades with a sharp edge was lower than round-type edge turbine blades.

  • In this study, we have fabricated the 3 wt% $Li_2CO3$ doped $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$ thick films on the Ag/Pd printed $Al_2O_3$ substrates for the LTCCs (Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) applications. From the X-ray diffraion analysis, 3 wt% $Li_2CO3$ doped BST thick films on the Ag/Pd printed $Al_2O_3$ substrates, which sintered at 900 $^{\circ}C$ have perovskite structure without any pyro phase. The dielectric properties of 3 wt% $Li_2CO3$ doped BST thick films were measured from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. To investigate the electrical properties of 3 wt% $Li_2CO3$ doped BST thick films, we employed the impedance spectroscopy. The complex impedance of 3 wt% $Li_2CO3$ doped BST thick films were measured from 20 Hz to 1 MHz at the various temperatures.

  • In this paper, a SDINS(strapdown inertial navigation system) rapid initial alignment technique with adaptive time delay compensation is proposed. The proposed method consists of two steps. In first step, misalignment and data latency are estimated by conducting pre-transfer alignment. Then, hybrid alignment is designed to rapidly find the misalignment changes induced by pyro-shock. To improve the performance of hybrid alignment, adaptive time delay compensation method is suggested. We verify the performance improvement of the proposed alignment scheme comparing with the conventional transfer alignment method by van test. The test result shows that the proposed alignment technique improves alignment performance.
