  • The fact that Pyeongtaek Port is located ideally at the central point of the Yellow Sea's Economic Zone and it is very close to the metropolitan area of South Korea which occupies more than 50 percent of the total trade volume in terms of tonnage is providing a good prospect of development for the Port of Pyeongtaek. This study examines the perception of shippers in Kyonggi-do on the development of Pyeongtaek Port, giving some suggestions to the Pyeongtaek Port Authority. It begins with a description of the port such as current economic status, statistics on the economy, trade and investment regarding the Port of Pyeongtaek. According to a particular questionnaire survey conducted in December 2001, the major obstacles to the utilization of the port are as follows: a shortage of liner shipping routes, lack of container handling facilities including container terminal, crane etc., and port sales promotion activity. Therefore the port should make aggressive efforts to attract container cargoes to and from China by expanding port facilities, implementing effective marketing strategies, introducing a customs-free zone/free trade zone, and strengthening port sales etc.

Aims of this study is investigating the regional change of Pyeongtaek city according to the opening of Pyeongtaek port: the change in population and land value by the average distance(27.3km) between Pyeongtaek port and each region and the change in industry and regional industry with location quotient of region. The increasing rate of population and people who work for industry showed an aspect of rising as a place locates near Pyeongtaek port, yet the increasing rate of land value showed little differences. In short, as the area is closer to Pyeongtaek port, the number of population and employees are higher. Yet, the increasing rate of the land value showed little difference. The study showed that manufacturing industry is specialized in rural region(eup myeon region), and tertiary industry is specialized in urban region(dong region) of Pyeongtaek city according to location quotient.

  • This study aims to grasp the hierarchy in the influence areas of port by the intensity of freight shipments and to seek the activating methods for the increase of export and import volumes of Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port. Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port whose major import and export freights are natural gas and automobile, were constructed for the increasing trade with People's Republic of China. This port is expanding the influence in the hinterland and foreland of the port, but core influence area of Pyeongtaek and Dangjin port is rich in trade volume within the radius of 70km. To become international as well as national ports, Pyeongtaek and Dangjin is required to execute the active policy to receive many-sideness of sea route and the recognition of freight holders, forwarders and ship companies in many regions.

  • As China, the world's work shop was transformed into consumption market intermediary products and expensive consumer goods are more in highly demand recently. These will tend to diffuse especially to the west coastal cities of China. The economic growth of China needs to develop hub port facilities more and more in these days. We don't need to explain value of hub port in international trade. Furthermore If we are to retain access convenience of merchant vessel we really must maintain hub ports in Korea. This paper aims to vitalize Pyeongtaek port in times of the Pan Yellow Sea in readiness for an increase of trade between Korean, China, and Japan absorbing economic effects. The Rise of China leads to increase of trade of Korea that make necessary to develop a big and wide port to Pan Yellow Sea times. There is a lot of competition to be a hub port to become a center of international trade in the Pan Yellow Sea market. We need to improve the surrounding environment or facilities and industry clusters flexibly of Pyeongtaek port. It will guide to cost cutting and to raise business efficiency. Ultimately Pyeongtaek port should maintain and make advance its competitiveness especially in the Pan Yellow Sea times.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the causal relationship among the trading volume of Pyeongtaek port, Incheon Inner Harbor, Incheon North Harbor. Methodologically, Granger causality, impulse response function, and variance decomposition based on VAR are used. The results indicate that Pyeongtaek port trading volume positive shock has positive effects on Incheon North Harbor. In addition, Incheon Inner Harbor trading volumes positive shock has negative effects on Pyeongtaek port. The results also suggest that the volume of Pyeongtaek port Granger-causes the volume of Incheon North Harbor, but not vice versa. The volume of Incheon Inner Harbor Granger-causes the volume of Pyeongtaek port. Based on these results, we suggest that port authorities have to focus on policies that would promote copetition between port of Pyeongtaek and Incheon in the world harbor industry.

  • In order to respond dynamic changes in the global distribution system, the City of Pyeongtaek hope to expand port facilities and its hinterlands. In specific, it plans to designate these areas as free economic zones(FEZ), synthesizing the whole procedures from the development proposals to the operation and management. This paper examines the proposed urban development strategies focused on Pyeongtaek port which still reveals critical weakness as a gateway port backed up by the Seoul Metropolitan Areas. In order to enhance the global competitiveness of Pyeongtaek port, theoretically it depends on Geo Coyle's ACTIFELD methods. In addition to the traditional quantitative data, Coyle's ACTIFELD methods emphasize qualitative approaches, all of which would facilitate structural and systemic analyses of complex social phenomena. Applying ACTIFELD methods, this paper proposes that the City of Pyeongtaek should focus on three alternatives. That is, Pyeongtaek's policy priority should be given to ts he port city based on the key concepts of Supply Chain Management(SCM), Co-opetition supporting city, and waterfront-initiated urban development.

  • This paper explores strategies for building an automobile logistics cluster in PyeongtaekDangjin Port, which needs to be developed and operated for automobile related value-added logistics services. The future of Korean automobile exports seems gloomy, but many domestic ports, including PyeongtaekDangjin Port, are struggling to secure a position as automobile ports by expanding port facilities to attract exports and transshipment vehicles. PyeongtaekDangjin Port is currently the best automobile port as it is under good conditions for building an automobile logistics cluster. Ssangyong Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., and LG Electronics Inc., which are located nearby, can secure enough land to build an automobile logistics cluster by developing a port distribution complex in the future. This will promote the sustainable development of PyeongtaekDangjin Port by creating a logistics hub, specifically an automobile logistics hub, which would allow diverse cultures and experiences to respond appropriately to future mobility development.

  • This study expresses the necessity of recognizing Pyeongtaek Port as a specific traffic safety area to ensure the safety of the vessels that navigate there using quantitative data. The number of foggy days, pilotage distance, the number of large vessels and the number of fishing vessels that traveled between Pyeongtaek Port and 6 ports chosen as comparative study objects were compared and analyzed. The results showed that Pyeongtaek Port was more frequently affected by restricted visibility. With these perverse conditions, Pyeongtaek Port has a longer pilotage distance than Busan, Busan Newport, Ulsan or Pohang Ports by as much as 3.5-6 times. Especially from May to July, when fisheries were most functional, large vessels were required to navigate in an opposite direction to avoid 35 fishing vessels that were observed, creating an increased possibility for collisions among vessels. Therefore, the navigational safety of Pyeongtaek Port should be further secured by defining the approaching waters as specific traffic safety areas, giving large vessels legal priority over fishing vessels.
