In this study, a smooth flat surface, low fin, Turbo-B, and Thermoexcel-E surfaces are used to examine the effect of the flow velocity on the pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat fluxes (CHFs). HTCs and CHFs are measured on a smooth square heater of $9.53{\times}9.53mm^2$ at $60^{\circ}C$ in a pool of pure water at various fluid velocities of 0, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 m/s. Test results show that for all surfaces, CHFs obtained with flow are higher than those obtained without flow. CHFs of the low fin surface are higher than those of the Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E surfaces due largely to the increase in surface area and sufficient fin spaces for the easy removal of bubbles. CHFs of the low fin surface show even 5 times higher CHFs as compared to the plain surface. On the other hand, both Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E surfaces do not show satisfactory results because their pore sizes are too small and water bubbles easily cover them. At low heat fluxes of less than $50kW/m^2$, HTCs increase as the flow velocity increases for all surfaces. In conclusion, a low fin geometry is good for application to steam generators in nuclear power plants.
This study was carried out to determine the effects of various starches (mungbean starch, cowpea starch and corn starch) on the quality characteristics of Omija jelly made of Omija extract. The viscosity of starch suspended in Omija extract and distilled water was measured by using a RVA(Rapid Visco Analyzer), and, color value, syneresis, texture(rupture test and TPA test) and sensory properties of Omija jelly and pure starch jelly were measured. Gelatinization temperature of each starch suspended in Omija extract was higher than that suspended in distilled water, whereas final viscosity of Omija jelly was decreased. Omija extract appeared to retard the gelatinization of starch and recrystallization of gelatinized starch. The viscosity of com starch was lowest among the three types of starch, suggesting thai higher concentration is needed in the use of com starch. The lightness(L) of corn starch gel was the highest among the gels. The syneresis of Omija jelly was lower than that of starch jelly, therefore, Omija extract seemed to be helpful on the stability of starch gel. Rupture properties of Omija jelly was lower than that of starch jelly, whereas the adhesiveness of omija jelly was greater. Omija jelly made of corn starch was less cohesive and more sticky than other gels, and its acceptability was very low. Sensory characteristics of the gel were relatively well correlated with the mechanical characteristics. Overall acceptability of Omija jelly was high in the concentration of 7, 8% of mungbean starch and 8, 9% of cowpea starch. Thus, the optimum concentration of starch for making Omija jelly using mungbean starch was 7, 8% and that using corn starch was 8, 9%.

Batch experiments were conducted to study the dissolution behavior of gasoline components. First, the dissolution kinetics of gasoline components and the applicability of Raoult's law in predicting their solubilities were investigated. In addition, the effects of compositional change of gasoline due to evaporization on the solubilities of individual components and TPH were determined. The kinetics of gasoline-water man transfer was found to be very similar for most components except for MTBE, which is a major additive for commercial gasoline. At equilibrium, the gasoline-water partitioning coefficients of individual components showed a log-linear relationship with their pure solubilities, though the slope was a little less than that predicted by Raoult's law. The concentrations of the individual components in the gasolines concentrated by volatilization could be characterized by the initial increase followed by substantial decrease. Almost the same behavior was observed for their solubilities. The total solubility (TPH) of gasoline decreased rapidly with the initial volume reduction and gradually decreased afterwards. The solubilities of BTEX, the major regulatory compounds, decreased even faster than the TPH solubilities. It was concluded that the compositional change of gasoline by volatilization may greatly affect their leaching potential and the toxicity of the contacting groundwater. The toxicity reduction efficiency by evaporating gasoline could be much more than the mass removal efficiency.
Traditionally Jeju island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year and famous as worldwide resort area bemuse of its pure natural environment and dramatic coastal scenery. But unpredicted coastal erosion problem, mused by variation of environmental conditions from construction of coastal structure and renovation of the existing ports, has raised its head above the water, and is becoming serious these days just like other coastal area in Korea. The phenomena happen here along the seaside of southern part of the island show that severe changes in coastal line from erosion and even witnessed the coastal cliff failure. In advanced countries, coastal engineers and researchers have studied deeply about this kind of problem for a long time. However, as it is not sot active in Korea and lack of research data, there exists difficulties on building protection methods and thoughtless constructions might make it more complicated and fatal to the coastal environment. In this study, we investigated some case studies of other countries and intended to induce and propose some integral protection methods for coastline erosion, considering environmentally sound and water friendly way of development such as artificial reef, floating breakwater, and double cellblock breakwater. Finally, we made analysis on the proposed methods with numerical model test and evaluation on the feasibility of each method.
The functional nanomaterials of fluorescent dye-doped silica nanoparticles(NPs) are applied to bio applications such as bio-labeling of DNA micro-array, and bio-imaging. Organic dye-doped fluorescent silica NPs exhibit excellent bio-compatibility, non-toxic, and highly hydrophilic properties. In this study, organic fluorescent dyes were dissolved in ethanol, and deionized(DI) water. Organic fluorescent dyes were physically adsorbed to silica NPs and chemically doped to silica NPs. The fluorescence characteristics(FLC) was investigated by UV lamp irradiation of 365 nm wavelength. As results, the FLC of dye-doped silica NPs exhibits better than dye-adsorbed silica NPs and the FLC was improved with the increase of concentration of doped-dyes. The fluorescent organic dyes were well dissolved in ethanol than DI water. The photostability of dye-doped silica NPs was superior than pure fluorescent organic dye. The FLC of optimized dye-doped silica NPs would be applied to agent of non-invasive fluorescence bio-imaging in live cell and in vivo.
This study aims to investigating the effect of Schmidt number (${\sigma}_c$) on sediment suspension and hydrodynamics calculation. The range of ${\sigma}_c$ is also studied based on the flux Richardson number ($Ri_f$) and gradient Richardson number ($Ri_g$). Numerical experiments are carried out by 1 dimensional vertical model. Both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are tested under the conditions of pure current and oscillatory flow. The turbulence damping effect due to sediment suspension is examined considering ${\sigma}_c$ as a constant for the damping effect. The results of this study show the consistent effect of ${\sigma}_c$ on sediment suspension regardless of hydrodynamic condition. It is also found that the model overestimates the flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy when the damping effect is not considered. Under the conditions of $Ri_f$ and $Ri_g$ causing density stratification, it is known that the vertical mixing of sediment is reasonably calculated in the range of ${\sigma}_c$ from 0.3 to 0.5.

It is well-known that polyethersulfone (PES) has high $CO_2$ selectivity over $N_2\;(or\;CH_4)$ and excellent pressure resistance of $CO_2$ plasticization among muy commercialized engineering plastics[1-4]. Asymmetric PES hollow fiber membranes for flue gas separation were developed by dry-wet spinning technique. The dope solution consists of PES, NMP and acetone. Water and water/NMP mixtures are used in outer and inner coagulants, respectively. Gas permeation rate (i.e., permeance) and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity were measured with pure gas, respectively and the micro-structure of hollow fiber membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of polymer concentration, ratio of NMP to acetone, length of air gap, evaporation condition and silicone coating were investigated on the $CO_2/N_2$ separation properties of the hollow fibers. Optimized PES hollow fiber membranes exhibited high permeance of $25\~50$ GPU and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of $30\~40$ at room temperature and have the apparent skin layer thickness of about $0.1\;{\mu}m$. The developed PES hollow fiber membranes, would be a good candidate suitable for the flue gas separation process.

Biodegradable nanocomposites were fabricated with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P using ultrasonication (US). Processing conditions were optimized to obtain the maximum tensile properties of the nanocomposites. Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as a plasticizer to avoid the brittleness of nanocompsoties. In order to disperse nanoclay into the PLA matrix, PEG and Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P were firstly mixed and dispersed in the chloroform and followed by ultrasonication for 1 min With 10% PEG 400, tensile stress and Young's modulus of the nanocomposites decreased from 53.5 MPa and 2225 MPa to 37.0 MPa and 1757 MPa, respectively, while the elongation was increased from 4% to 21%. Tensile stress, Young's modulus, and elongation of nanocomposites were also increased with nanoclay concentration up to 2% (w/w) and were decreased with further increase in the nanoclay concentration. Transmittance of nanocomposites were significantly decreased from 62.5% for pure PLA film to 7.8% for 5% nanoclay containing nanocomposites. Water vapor permeability of the nanocomposites was also significantly decreased with nanoclay concentration and the minimum WVP of $3.5{\times}10^{-11}g{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ was obtained with 5% (w/w) nanoclay concentration. The PLA/Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P nanocomposites showed a great potential as a environmental friendly food packaging material.

For the development of semiconducting photoelectrode to be more stable and efficient in the process of photoelectrolysis of the water, pure titanium rods were oxidized by anodic oxidation, furance oxidation and flame oxidation and used as electrodes. The Indium islands were formed by electrodeposition of "In" thin film on $TiO_2$ and Ti by electrodeposition. Also $A1_2O_3$ and NiO islands were coated on Ti by the electron-beam evaporation technique. The maximum photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency(${\eta}$) was 0.98% for flame oxidized electrode($1200^{\circ}C$ for 2min in air). Anodically oxidized electrodes have photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency of 0.14%. Furnace oxidized electrode($800^{\circ}C$ for 10min in air) has 0.57% of photoelectrochemical efficiency and shows a band-gap energy of about 2.9eV. The $In_2O_3$ coated $TiO_2$ exhibits 0.8% of photoelectrochemical efficiency but much higher value of ${\eta}$ was obtained with the Increase of applied blas voltage. However, $Al_2O_3$ or NiO coated $TiO_2$ shows much low value of ${\eta}$. The efficiency was dependent on the presence of the metallic interstitial compound $TiO_{0+x}$(x<0.33) at the metal-semiconductor interface and the thickness of the suboxide layer and the external rutile scale.
