Naldrettite, recently discovered in the Mesamax Northwest deposit, Ungava region, northern Quebec, Canada, was reported as a new mineral. In order to confirm whether itis a natural equivalent of synthetic $Pd_2Sb$ phase or not, the pure $Pd_2Sb$ phase has been synthesized and investigated by reflected microscope, electron microprobe analyser, X-ray diffractometer, and micro-indentation hardness tester. Under reflected light synthetic $Pd_2Sb$ Phase is white with a creamy tint in both air and oil and weakly bireflectant. Anisotropism is strong, from brownish gray to greenish blue in air. Micro-indentation hardness test gives VHN100=293(242-322). Composition of the phase is $63.7\~64.3wt.\%\;Pd\;and\; 36.4\~36.8wt.\%$ Sb, and is entirely consistent. The phase, quenched from $500^{\circ}C$, is orthorhobic with space group $Cmc2_1$, and the cell parameters are a=3.366(1), b=17.523(3), c=6.929(2) ${\AA}$. All mineralogical properties of synthetic $Pd_2Sb$ compare very well with those of naldrettite, confirming that naldrettite is the natural analogue of the synthetic $Pd_2Sb$ phase.
In order to elucidate a responsible mechanism for the development of the odor characteristics of cooked desirable flavoring materials such as crab and shrimp, shore swimming crab flesh were extracted with various solvents and resulting extracts were evaluated organoleptically after cooking. As a result, $80\%$ aqueous methanol extract (AME) was found to produce a cooked desirable flavoring odor. After dialysis of AME, outer dialyzate was fractionated by ionexchange column chromatography, and each of the fraction obtained was subjected to cooking, fellowed by organoleptic evaluation. The outer dialyzate fraction, acidic and amphoteric fraction produced a cooked crab-like odor, On the basis of the composition of $80\%$ AME, an artificial crab extract was prepared with pure chemicals. The artificial crab extract thus obtained closely resembled $80\%$ AME in respect of the cooked odor. To elucidate the role of individual components, the artificial extracts from which certain component alone or as group was omitted were subjected to organoleptic evaluation after cooking. All of neutral, acidic, basic, and sulfur containing amino acids and quarternary base compounds were involved in the development of the cooked crab-like odor. The cooked odor of artificial extract without addition of ribose was lacking in the characteristics of cooked crab odor, and phosphorus compound accelerated the development of the cooked crab-like odor.
Feathers are produced in huge quantities as a waste product at commercial poultry processing plants. Since feathers are almost pure keratin protein, feather wastes represent an alternative to more expensive dietary ingredients for animal feedstuffs. Generally they become feather meal used as animal feed after undergoing physical and chemical treatments. These processes require significant energy and also cause environmental pollutions. Therefore, biodegradation of feather by microorganisms represents an alternative method to prevent environment contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate cultural conditions affecting keratinolytic protease production by Bacillus pumilus RS7. We also assessed the nutritive value of microbial and alkaline feather hydrolysates, The composition of optimal medium for the keratinolytic protease was fructose 0.05%, yeast extract 0.3%, NaCl 0.05%, K2HPO4 0.03%, KH2PO4 0.04% and MgCl2 6H2O 0.01%, respectively. The optimal temperature and initial pH was $30^{\circ}C$ and 9.0, respectively. The keratinolytic protease production under optimal condition reached a maximum after 18 h of cultivation. Total amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $113.8\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $504.9\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Essential amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $47.2\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $334.0\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Thus, feather hydrolysates have the potential for utilization as an ingredient in animal feed.
PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to conduct an in vitro comparative evaluation of polished and laser-dimpled titanium (Ti) surfaces to determine whether either surface has an advantage in promoting the attachment of epithelial-like cells and fibroblast to Ti. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty-eight coin-shaped samples of commercially pure, grade 4 Ti plates were used in this study. These discs were cleaned to a surface roughness (Ra: roughness centerline average) of 180 nm by polishing and were divided into three groups: SM (n=16) had no dimples and served as the control, SM15 (n=16) had $5-{\mu}m$ dimples at $10-{\mu}m$ intervals, and SM30 (n=16) had $5-{\mu}m$ dimples at $25-{\mu}m$ intervals in a $2{\times}4mm^2$ area at the center of the disc. Human gingival squamous cell carcinoma cells (YD-38) and human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) were cultured and used in cell proliferation assays, adhesion assays, immunofluorescent staining of adhesion proteins, and morphological analysis by SEM. The data were analyzed statistically to determine the significance of differences. RESULTS. The adhesion strength of epithelial cells was higher on Ti surfaces with $5-{\mu}m$ laser dimples than on polished Ti surfaces, while the adhesion of fibroblasts was not significantly changed by laser treatment of implant surfaces. However, epithelial cells and fibroblasts around the laser dimples appeared larger and showed increased expression of adhesion proteins. CONCLUSION. These findings demonstrate that laser dimpling may contribute to improving the peri-implant soft tissue barrier. This study provided helpful information for developing the transmucosal surface of the abutment.
Compatability of films made of chitosan, gelatin, and their blends prepared by aqueous solution casting was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan, and thermal stability of chitosan in blends was higher than that of pure chitosan due to interaction among functional groups of component polymers in blend. Glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of blends was dependent on chitosan content of blends. Blend films exhibited good miscibility. Moisture and glycerol contents of blend strongly affected thermal properties of two component polymers.
The forged iron axe of the middle 3rd Century found in the No. 2 wood-framed tomb from the Hwangseongdong site, Gyeongju is rectangular on the plane level. The iron axe shines in met-allic luster, which is light grey with pale creamy tint. The result of X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the axe consists of magnetite and geothite, which can explain why the composition and texture of the original ore has been kept intact. There are fine-grained quartz, calcite, mica, magnetite, amphibole, unknown tungsten minerals, pyroxene and olivine inside the axe. Those must be the impurities that they failed to remove in the thermal treatment process. Generally, the iron axe consists mainly of pearlite texture coexisting ferrite and cementite, and show high carbon contents with homogeneous distribution. It can be interpreted the axe was carburized after the material was made to resemble pure iron. The decarbonization work didn't go well along the process marks. Crude ores of the iron axe are possible utilized by magnetite from the Ulsan mine on the basis of the occurrences and inclusions. It's estimated that the original ore was bloom produced in low-temperature reduction and formed around in $727^{\circ}C$, which is eutetic temperature.
Pauline Hopkins's Of One Blood; Or, the Hidden Self was published in the Colored American Magazine during 1902-03. As a literary experimentalist and a political protester, Hopkins uses her fiction as a medium to overcome and ameliorate the violently racialized surroundings of the turn-of-the-century America. Having been faced with racist rhetorics and theories growing on biological differences between races, Hopkins must have felt an overwhelming urgency to challenge the heritage of slavery in American history. In order to speak out her political agenda in such a milieu, she needed a new setting as well as new narrative materials for the new era. She had to move the setting from America to Africa, the ancient utopian Ethiopia; her interest in the ancient African civilization reflects both a popular African-American vision of Africa and the movement of "black nationalism" of the time. She also needed materials from nineteenthcentury sciences, the newly evolving theories of psychology and mysticism (spiritualism/mesmerism), to explore the meaning of "the hidden self" which unfolds the complex nature of Hopkin's position on race, "blood," and African-American racial subjectivity. Hopkins in the novel explores not the color line but the bloodline. Tracing the horrific legacy of incest in the history of slavery, she attempts to redefine the true racial identity of African-Americans in America and to reconstruct their past, both family and race history. At the very center of her major tropes in the novel-such as "of one blood," "the hidden self," and incest-exists female body. Black female body, though it represents the violent site of sexual body (rape and incest) in slavery, ultimately becomes a vehicle to convey and preserve the truth of racial memory/past/history for African-Americans. As a conveyor of the past, black women not just connect the past and the present but also reawaken AfricanAmericans with the legacy of the African 'pure' bloodline. Hopkins's vision here necessitates the reevaluation of black women's role in family and history, heralding the 20th-century black feminine writing. With the major tropes, Hopkins clearly suggests that the blood of (African-)Americans is unrecognizably intermixed. Although the novel ends with ambivalence and without resolution on what Africa signifies, those tropes certainly offer her a vehicle for criticizing as well as for challenging the racial reality of America.

Deuterium (D) is an isotope with one more neutron number than hydrogen (H). Heavy elements rarely change their chemical properties with little effect even if the number of neutrons increases, but low-mass elements change their vibration energy, diffusion rate, and reaction rate because the effect cannot be ignored, which is called an isotope effect. Recently, in the semiconductor and display industries, there is a trend to replace hydrogen gas (H2) with deuterium gas (D2) in order to improve process stability and product quality by using the isotope effect. In addition, as the demand for D2 in industries increases, domestic gas producers are making efforts to produce and supply D2 on their own. In the case of high purity D2, most of them are produced by electrolysis of heavy water (D2O), and among D2, hydrogen deuteride (HD) molecules are present as isotope impurities. Therefore, in order to maximize the isotope effect of hydrogen in the electronic industry, HD, which is an isotope impurity of D2 used in the process, should be small amount. To this end, purity analysis of D2 for industrial processing is essential. In this study, HD quantitative analysis of D2 for high purity D2 purity analysis was established and hydrogen isotope RM (Reference material) was developed. Since hydrogen isotopes are difficult to analyze with general gas analysis instrument, they were analyzed using a high-precision mass spectrometer (Gas/MS, Finnigan MAT271). High purity HD gas was injected into Gas/MS, sensitivity was determined by a signal according to pressure, and HD concentrations in two bottles of D2 were quantified using the corresponding sensitivity. The amount fraction of HD in each D2 was (4518 ± 275) μmol/mol, (2282 ± 144) μmol/mol. D2, which quantifies HD amount using the developed quantitative analysis method, will be manufactured with hydrogen isotope RM and distributed for quality management and maintenance of electronic industries and gas producers in the future.

This study investigated the diversity of intestinal microbial communities isolated from the intestine of topshell (Turbo cornutus) from the coast of Jeju Island (Beobhwan, Seogwipo city). Pure cultivation using the standard marine agar (MA) medium showed the most significant number of clusters. Aerobic and anaerobic culture allowed isolation of strains of 1.8×105 CFU·g-1 and 0.4×10 CFU·g-1 on average, respectively. The microbial population in the topshell intestine was classified into 4 phyla, 12 families, 26 genera, and 67 species. The microbes in the topshell intestine were detected by homology with 93~100% with standard strains. The microbes in the topshell intestine consisted of Proteobacteria 39%, Firmicutes 34%, Actinobacteria 21%, and Bacteroidets 6%. The identified families were Alteromonadaceae (1), Shewanellaceae (4), Vibrionaceae (12), Phyllobacteriaeceae (1), Rhodobacteraceae (8), Bacillaceae (21), Paenibacillaceae (2), Cellulomonadaceae (1), Mycobacteriaceae (6), Nocardiaceae (4), Streptomycetaceae (3) and Flavobacteriaceae (4). Bacillus sp. and Vibrio sp. accounted for the greatest portion of the separated strains. Among the isolated microorganisms, some strains had probiotic functions.

The isotope dilution method was used for the determination of Br impurity in $1000{\mu}g/g$ Cl standard solution. Since relatively pure KCl salt was used for the preparation of the Cl standard solution, the Br impurity determination suffers from both spectral and non-spectral interferences due to the presence of a large amount of K and Cl matrices. AG2-X8 anion-exchange resin was employed to separate the Br analyte from the matrices, and RF power was raised to 1500 W and nebulizer gas flow rate was lowered to 0.77 L/min to reduce background from the $ArArH^+$ molecular ions. The Br impurity in the $1000{\mu}g/g$ Cl standard solution was determined to be 43.7 ng/g with the standard addition method. The analytical result was in good agreement with 41.2 ng/g (RSD 1.6%) determined by the isotope dilution method to lower uncertainty from poor reproducibility of the anion-exchange process.
