Pure Ti as well as Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for dental implant applications. However, for a better biocompatibility it seems important to avoid in the composition the presence of V due to the toxic effects of V ion release. Thus Al and V free and composed of non-toxic element such as Nb, Zr alloys as biomaterials have been developed. Especially, Zr contains to same family in periodic table as Ti. The addition of Zr to Ti alloy has an excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Zr alloys for biomaterials have been investigated using by electrochemical methods. Methods: Ti-Zr(10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and homogenized for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Phase constitutions and microstructure of the specimens were characterized by XRD, OM and SEM. The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic test (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV), potentiostatic test (const. potential of 300 mV) in artificial saliva solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA).
The influences of reduction time, potential difference and ionic concentration flow rate have been investigated on the electrolytic recovery of silver from artificial photographic wastewater in continuous flow reactor system. As the initial concentration of silver ion and applied potential were increased, the amount of silver recovered was observed to be raised. Also, the electrolytically recovered material from artificial wastewater was proved to be pure silver based on the qualitative analyses by EPMA and XRD.
Sixteen compounds of Neobalanocarpus heimii were successfully identified directly from their plant extract using a triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS system. In order to fulfil the objectives of this work, a series of stilbene oligomers of various degrees of condensation were isolated and their structure are characterized. Out of these, four are resveratrol dimers, three trimers, and nine tetramers. The isolation process was done on a fully automated semi-preparative HPLC system. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D- and 2D-NMR as well as MS data. The mass fragmentation patterns of the compounds were recorded and a retrievable in-house library was built to keep the data. In order to demonstrate the potential of this approach, the polyphenolic crude extract was analysed with the LC-MS/MS system and the MS/MS spectra extracted for each chromatographic peak of interest. The fragmentation patterns were compared with those of anticipated pure compounds that were previously recorded. All compounds were successfully identified. It is therefore believed that the LC-MS/MS potential for dereplication of structurally similar compounds in a crude mixture was thus firmly established.
Ti and Ti alloys have been extensively used in the medical and dental fields because of their good corrosion resistance, high strength to density ratio and especially, their low elastic modulus compared to other metallic materials. Recent trends in biomaterials research have focused on development of metallic alloys with elastic modulus similar to natural bone, however, many candidate materials also contain toxic elements that would be biologically harmful. In this study, new Ti based alloys which do not contain the toxic metallic components were developed using a theoretical method (DV-$X{\alpha}$). In addition, alloys were developed with improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Ternary Ti-Ag-Zr alloys consisting of biocompatible alloying elements were produced to investigate the alloying effect on microstructure, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The effects of various contents of Zr on the mechanical properties and biocompatibility were compared. The alloys exhibited higher strength and corrosion resistance than pure Ti, had antibacterial properties, and were not observed to be cytotoxic. Of the designed alloys' mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the Ti-3Ag-0.5Zr alloy had the best results.

There is increasing interest in exploiting natural products as feed additives to solve problems in animal nutrition and livestock production. Essential oils and saponins are two types of plant secondary compounds that hold promise as natural feed additives for ruminants. This paper describes recent advances in research into these additives. The research has generally concentrated on protein metabolism. Dietary essential oils caused rates of NH$_3$ production from amino acids in ruminal fluid taken from sheep and cattle receiving the oils to decrease, yet proteinase and peptidase activities were unchanged. Hyper-ammonia-producing (HAP) bacteria were the most sensitive of ruminal bacteria to essential oils in pure culture. Essential oils also slowed colonisation and digestion of some feedstuffs. Ruminobacter amylophilus may be a key organism in mediating these effects. Saponin-containing plants and their extracts appear to be useful as a means of suppressing the bacteriolytic activity of rumen ciliate protozoa and thereby enhancing total microbial protein flow from the rumen. The effects of some saponins seems to be transient, which may stem from the hydrolysis of saponins to their corresponding sapogenin aglycones, which are much less toxic to protozoa. Saponins also have selective antibacterial effects which may prove useful in, for example, controlling starch digestion. These studies illustrate that plant secondary compounds, of which essential oils and saponins comprise a small proportion, have great potential as 'natural' manipulators of rumen fermentation, to the potential benefit of the farmer and the environment.

In this research, to analyze the concentration of heavy metal ions in water, we tried to find the measuring time at which the faradaic electric currents flowing by the pure oxidation-reduction reaction from the pushing up mercury electrode of the stripping scan square wave voltammetry(SV+SWV) methods system becomes larger than the capacitance electric current. In order to do this, a method for analyzing signals using FPGA has been designed and we conducted 120 experiments using it. As a result, when the frequency of the square wave is 40Hz, The valid potential-current signal was measured from 96.6667% to 96.7155% of the end of the pulse of the forward and reverse, and the optimal signal was measured at 96.6667%. In addition, the experiment was carried out 40 times by changing the pulse height of the square wave from 10Mv to 40Mv. As a result, at a size smaller than 40Mv, there is little change in the magnitude of the potential-current, and an invalid signal was generated when it is out of this size.
The aglycones of vicine and convicine have been implicated as the causative factors for favism in fababeans. Thus, the presence of these compounds in fababeans is a potential obstacle to the use of fababeans and fababean preparations in foods. Investigations of vicine stability in fababeans and in pure solutions revealed that vicine is very stable, however, divicine derived from vicine by ${\beta}-gIucosidase$ action or by acid hydrolysis is highly unstable at conditions prevalent in food processing. Therefore, the possibility of incorporating of ${\beta}-gIucosidase$ in food products containing fababean preparations was suggested to overcome potential risks of favism related to the consumption of fababean fortified products.

Today, dental implants are an acceptable alternative, capable of providing bone-anchored fixed prostheses for improved quality of life and self esteem for many patients. Research advances in dental implantology have led to the development of several different types of materials, and it is anticipated that continued research will likewise lead to advanced dental implant materials. Currently used pure titanium has relatively low hardness and strength which possibly limits its ability to resist the functional loads as a dental implant. Ti-6Al-4V also has potential problems such as corrosion resistance, bone biocompatibility etc. The carefully selected Zr, Nb, Ta, Pd, In constituents could improve mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility compared to that of currently used implant metals. On the basis of the totality of the data from our study, it can be concluded that new titanium alloys containing Zr, Nb, Ta, Pd, In are able to provide improved mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility to warrant further investigation of it's potential as new biomaterials for dental implants.
We report the cathodoluminescence and aging properties of a series of green phosphors of formula $Sr_{1-x}M_xGa_2S_4$:Eu (x = 0.0-1.0, M = Ba or Ca) that have potential applications in field emission displays (FEDs). The series of phosphors was synthesized via NaBr-aided solid-state reactions in a flowing $H_2S$ stream. A low level ($\sim$20%) of Ba or Ca substitution for Sr in $SrGa_2S_4$:Eu maintains the orthorhombic phase of pure $SrGa_2S_4$:Eu phosphors. Further, a low level ($\sim$20%) of Ba or Ca substitution for Sr in $SrGa_2S_4$:Eu provides various green colors and sufficient brightness for FED applications. Substitution of Ba or Ca for Sr in $SrGa_2S_4$:Eu also improved the stability of the phosphor when it was operated under electron-beam irradiation of 5 kV.
A research project was conducted to assess the levels of noise exposed to "Noraebang" users and potential hazards to noise-induced hearing loss due to commercial Noraebang noise. A two-way, mixed-factors factorial design was employed for the experiment using independent variables of "noise source" (no- singer, 1-singer, and 2-singer conditions) and "music type" (Trot, Ballad, and Rock music) with 18 normal hearing subjects. Each singer group sang 5 popular songs of each music type in each signing condition, whereas background music was just played for the no-singer condition. For each music played/sung, equivalent continuous sound pressure levels and maximum sound pressure levels were measured for data analysis purposes. Pure-tone audiometry was applied for measuring subjects' hearing threshold levels before and after exposure to Noraebgang noise. The statistical analyses indicate that average continuous noise levels due to Noraebang leisure environment were very serious, especially when two people were singing (higher than 95 dBA). Furthermore, maximum noise levels often exceeded the OSHA's non-premissible 115 dBA level. Worse yet, hearing loss assessment implies that Noraebang facilities may pose a serious threat to noise-induced hearing loss, based on 6-8 dB loss at 125 Hz and 8 dB loss at 4000 Hz after about 1-hour Noraebang noise exposure.
