Fabrication of Ultra Small Size Hole Array on Thin Metal Foil (초미세 금속 박판 홀 어레이 가공)

  • In the present research, the simultaneous punching of ultra small size hole of $2\~10\;{\mu}m$ in diameter on flat rolled thin metal foils was conducted with elastic polymer punch. Workpiece used in the present investigation were the rolled pure copper of $3{\mu}m$ in thickness and CP titanium of 1.5fm in thickness. The metal foils were punched with the dies and arrays of circular and rectangular holes were made. The process set-up is similar to that of the flexible rubber pad farming or Guerin process. Arrays of holes were punched successfully in one step forming. The punched holes were examined in terms of their dimensions. The effects of the wafer die hole dimension and heat treatment of the workpiece on ultra small size hole formation of the thin foil were discussed. The process condition such as proper die shape, pressure, pressure rate and diameter-thickness ratio (d/t) were also discussed. The results in this paper show that the present method can be successfully applied to the fabrication of ultra small size hole away in a one step operation.

Finite element impact analysis for the design of structurally dissipating rock-shed

  • This paper presents finite element impact analysis for the design of Structurally Dissipating Rock-shed (SDR), an innovative design of reinforced concrete rock-shed. By using an appropriate finite element impact algorithm, the SDR structure is modelled in a simplified but efficient way. The numerical results are firstly verified through comparisons with the results of the experiments recently realized by ESIGEC and TONELLO I.C. It is shown that, using this impact algorithm, it is possible to correctly predict the SDR structural behaviour under different rock-fall impact conditions. Moreover, the numerical results show that the slab centre is the critical impact location for reinforced concrete slab design. The impact analyses have thus been focused on the impacts at the slab centre for the SDR structural optimization. Several series of parametric studies have been carried out with respect to load cases and engineering parameters choices. These numerical results support the robustness of the new SDR concept, and serve to optimize SDR structure and improve its conventional engineering design, especially for ensuring the slab punching shear resistance.

Evaluation of Role Flangeability of Steel Sheet with respect to the Role Processing Condition (가공조건에 따른 강판의 구멍확장성 평가)

  • In this paper, hole expanding tests are carried out in order to identify the effect of the hole process condition on the hole expanding ratio. Specimens with two different hole conditions are prepared: one is produced with punching process; and the other is reamed after punching to get smoother hole surface. The experimental results show that the facture mechanism and the hole expanding ratio are quite different with respect to the hole condition. The hole expanding ratio of a punched specimen is much smaller than that of a reamed one due to the difference of surface roughness and internal defects. For the thorough investigation of those effects, tensile tests of a specimen with a hole are performed. The fracture strain is obtained with different hole conditions and a finite element analysis of the hole flanging process carried out. The experimental results are confirmed and reevaluated by finite element analysis of the hole flanging process with ductile fracture criterion proposed.

Behavlor of Ontarlo-Type Skew Bridge Decks (온태리오형 교량상판의 거동에 관한 연구 (사교의 경우))

  • An experimental and analytical invest.igation was conducted regarding the behavior of reinforced concrete skew bridge decb with Ontario-type reinforcement. A full-scale model repmsenting the essential behavior of a full skew bridge was built and tested. The test specimen had details similar to those required by the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code, modified as recommended by the Texas State Highway Dopartment. The skuw bridge deck performed sati:,factorily under the current AASHTO design load le"els as well as the overload conditions(about :3 times the current AASHTO design wheel load). The skew edges failed by shear ; the center by punching shear. The calculated flexural capacity considering arching action always far exceeded the actual failure load (shear or punching shear) at each test location. To check the experimental results a detailed finite element model of the specimen was developed using a general-purpose structural analysis pmgram. Analytical predictions and exper'imental results agreed c1osuly.

Punching Behavior of Concrete Strengthening with CFRP Sheet under Low Velocity Impact Loading (CFRP Sheet로 보강한 콘크리트의 저속 충격하중에 하에서의 펀칭파괴 거동)

  • In this study, the static and low velocity impact tests for two-way concrete specimens strengthening with the CFRP sheets were carried out. The specimens that had a dimension of $50{\times}350{\times}350mm$ with 40 MPa plain concrete and steel fiber reinforced concrete which had same mixture to plain concrete and 0.75% steel fibers were fabricated. The specimens reinforced with the CFRP or steel fibers showed mixed failure modes, splitting and punching, also splitting cracks and fragments were much reduced than plain concrete specimens'. Two-way concrete members reinforced with the CFRP and steel fiber simultaneously dissipated 6.8 times larger energy than not-retrofitted members' under the low-velocity impact loading.

Effects of Manufacturing Technology on the Mechanical Properties of Alfa Fiber Non-woven Reinforced PMMA Composites

  • Mechanical properties of nonwoven alfa fiber based reinforced biocomposite were evaluated to assess the possibility of using it as a new material in engineering applications such as orthopedic application. Samples were fabricated by needle punching, thermal bonding and Hydroentanglement, by blending alfa fibers with wool fibers or Polypropylene fibers. The mechanical properties were tested and showed that the nonwoven NW3 (alfa fiber/PP/PLA, with hydroentanglement) is the best. It has a value of stress at break of 1.94 MPa, a strain of 54.2% and a young's module of 7.95 MPa, in a production normal direction. A biocomposite has been made with NW3 mixed with PMMA matrix. The use of nonwoven based alfa fiber in reinforcing the composite material increases its rigidity and the tensile strength; the elongation was found to be 1.53%, the Young's Module of 1.79 GPa and the tensile at break of 15.06 MPa. Results indicated that alfa fibres are of interest for low-cost engineering applications and can compete with glass fibres in orthopedic application.

Automatic Tool Selection in Numerically Controlled Sheet Metal Fabrication (NC 판금작업에서의 자동 공구선정)

  • In sheet metal fabrication using NCT(numerically controlled turret), the automatic tool selection for the NCT operation is the major problem to be solved first to improve its production performance. However, the punching tool selection has been done by human experts either manually or semi-automatically. In this paper, we have introduced the shape-index-set to handle the shape of sheet metal parts and developed an algorithm through which one can find easily the successive matching curves between two curve lists, one from the punching tool and the other from the boundaries of the sheet metal part. Based on this algorithm, we have also devised the method that can select automatically the tools to punch out the boundaries of sheet metal parts. The result of several computational experiments shows the successful tool selection without any fail.

A Development of the Design System of the Progressive Stamping Dies by using Boundary Representation and Its Application (경계표현법을 응용한 순차 금형 자동 설계시스템 개발 및 적용)

  • In this paper, an auto-design system is introduced for a stamping tool based on commercial computer aided design system with its drafting language. The auto-design system consists of tool oriented product design subsystem which modifies and configures the product drawing, tool concept design subsystem which make a design of the punches and their punching progression and parts design subsystem that makes automatic dimension. The system is applied to the mechanical design of the stamping tool. The main logic of the system is based on half-edge theory, a kernel for the 3 dimensional CAD system, which is applied to 2 dimensional drafting auto-design system. The auto-design system enables to conspicuously reducing the designing time of the tool. In addition, there is little drafting error that had been about 3% without auto design program. It is effective to reduce the development time for new products because of rapid designing time of the tools, standardization of the stamping tool and the drafting rule for the auto-design system. The auto-design system yields high efficiency of the tool manufacturing system.

A Coarse Mesh Model for Numerical Analysis of Lead Frame Deformation Due to Blanking Residual Stress (블랭킹 잔류응력에 의한 리드프레임 변형 수치해석을 위한 대격자 모델)

  • The deformation of sheet metal due to the residual stress during blanking or piercing process, is numerically simulated by means of a commercial finite element code. Two dimensional plain strain problem is solved and then its result is applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame. The plain strain element is applied to the 2D problem to observe the Von Mises equivalent stress concentration at the both shearing edges. As the punch penetrates into the sheet material, the stress concentration generated on both edges is getting increased to be the shearing surface. The limits of the punching depth applied to the simulation is 16% and 24% of the sheet thickness for the plain strain element and the hexahedral element, respectively. The hexahedral element and the limit of punching depth were applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame for the blanking process. The FEM results for the lead deformation were very good agreement with the experimental ones. This paper shows that the coarse mesh has enabled to analyze the lead deformation generated due to the blanking mechanism. This simple approach to save the calculation time will be very effective to the design of the blanking tools in industries.

The development of punch-die aligning algorithm in micro punch system with using the total capacitance (총 정전용량을 이용한 마이크로 펀치 시스템의 펀치-다이 얼라인먼트 조절 알고리즘 개발)

  • The aligning between the punch and die governs no only the burr formation characteristics but also the life time of the punch and die in the sheet metal blanking process. There are many ways to adjust the two elements in the general punching systems but in the case of micro punch system, the punch size is reduced to a few tenth of micrometer range and the general aligning methods are almost impossible to apply. The image processing is the most widely used method in micro punch aligning, but in order to apply the method, it needs quite a large space for visionary system to approach the punch-die aligning zone. In this paper, the new punch-die aligning method with using the total capacitance between the punch and die hole is proposed. In this method, the tip surface of the punch tool locates at the same plane of the die surface and the capacitance variation between the two elements are measured. When the center of the two elements are coincided, the capacitance is minimized, but when the align Is changed to any direction, the capacitance between the two elements increase. In order to verify the feasibility of this method, the aligning and punching tests was performed.
