  • The claw pump, one of oil-less dry pumps developed to solve problems found in vacuum systems pumped by oil-sealed rotary pumps, has been widely used separately or as a part of compound structure with a roots pump. The claw pump has some merits such as a high pumping speed, a high compression ratio, and relatively little heat generation. The high compression ratio of the claw pump is compression ratio, and relatively little heat generation. The high compression ratio of the claw pump is based on efficient sweeping action of the special type rotor and an intrinsic self-valving mechanism. The contour of the rotor with claw-type blade is designed basically to make two rotors revolve smoothly without touching with each other, and related dimensions are determined by required pumping speed, compression ratio, power demand and diameter of the rotor axis. In this paper the procedure of designing the rotor of the claw pump is described and factors influencing the pump performance are analyzed.

  • Controlling fluid flows in micro scales is a non-trivial issue among those who are involved in designing lab-on-chips. Pumping and mixing by using electrokinetic principles has been popular in that the method requires a few parts and it is easy to control. This paper explains the basic mechanism of the electroosmotic flows caused by AC together with presenting some numerical results. In particular, the fundamental, physical idea involved in the mechanism will be illustrated in terms of the kinematic aspect. Since the electroosmotic flows are mainly driven by the motion of ions, we also demonstrate the ion motions by using the numerical-visualization method.

  • The fiber formation of conventional melt spinning is extruded by forcing the polymer melt through a spinneret by pumping mechanism usually involving high pressure. This is followed by cooling, solidification and appropriate drawing of the fiber. The spinning process is broadly applicable to polyolefin, polyamide, polyester and indeed the whole range of fibers forming thermoplastic polymers. (omitted)

  • $Er^{3+}$ ion shows a stable and efficient luminescence at 1.54mm due to its $^4I_{13/2}\;{\rightarrow}\;^4I_{15/2}$ intra-4f transition. As this corresponds to the low-loss window of silica-based optical fibers, Er-based light sources have become a mainstay of the long-distance telecom. In most telecom applications, $Er^{3+}$ ions are excited via resonant optical pumping. However, if nanocluster-Si (nc-Si) are co-doped with $Er^{3+}$, $Er^{3+}$ can be excited via energy transfer from excited electrical carriers in the nc-Si as well. This combines the broad, strong absorption band of nc-Si with narrow, stable emission spectra of $Er^{3+}$ to allow top-pumping with off-resonant, low-cost broadband light sources as well as electrical pumping. A widely used method to achieve nc-Si sensitization of $Er^{3+}$ is high-temperature annealing of Er-doped, non-stoichiometric amorphous thin film with excess Si (e.g.,silicon-rich silicon oxide(SRSO)) to precipitate nc-Si and optically activate $Er^{3+}$ at the same time. Unfortunately, such precipitation and growth of nc-Si into Er-doped oxide matrix can lead to $Er^{3+}$ clustering away from nc-Si at anneal temperatures much lower than ${\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ that is necessary for full optical activation of $Er^{3+}$ in $SiO_2$. Recently, silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRSN) was reported to be a promising alternative to SRSO that can overcome this problem of Er clustering. But as nc-Si formation and optical activation $Er^{3+}$ remain linked in Er-doped SRSN, it is not clear which mechanism is responsible for the observed improvement. In this paper, we report on investigating the effect of separating the nc-Si formation and $Er^{3+}$ activation by using hetero-multilayers that consist of nm-thin SRSO or SRSN sensitizing layers with Er-doped $SiO_2$ or $Si_3N_4$ luminescing layers.

  • Reverse flow occurs in a channel when there is an obstruction at the entry, However it has been shown recently that reverse flow can be realized without an obstruction, by staggering the sides of the channel and placing it at an angle of attack to the oncoming flow. In this study the latter flow is computationally investigated. And the mechanism is investigated using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The results have captured all the essential features of this complex phenomenon and show the time dependent pumping mechanism which leads to the occurrence of reverse flow.

  • 700nm red emission(3F3longrightarrow3H6) in Tm3+ ion with 800 nm(3H6longrightarrow3H4) excitation via upconversion process has been reported only in host materials which have low phonon energies such as halide crystals. However, we observed 700nm and 480nm(1G4longrightarrow3H6) upconverted emission with 800nm excitation in several oxide glasses which has never reported. With spectroscopic analyses and lifetime measurements of each nergy level of Tm3+ ion doped in various oxide glasses, following mechanisms are suggested. For red upconversion, upconversion mechanism changed with Tm3+ concentration. While direct excitation up to 3F3 level via anti-Stokes excitation was dominated at low concentration, two-step excitation via 3H6longrightarrow3H4 and 3F4longrightarrow3F3 transitions was dominated at high concentration. For blue upconversion, two step excitation mechanism up to 1G4 level was suggested as follows : electrons are exciated up to 3H5 with direct excitation with pumping light up to 3H4 followed by multiphonon relaxation, and then additional reabsorption of pumping light excites electrons up to 1G4.

  • This paper presents further investigation into the effect of over-expansion cycle in a spark-ignition engine. On the basis of the results obtained in previous studies, several combinations of late-closing (LC) of intake valve and expansion ratio were tested using a single-cylinder production engine. A large volume of intake capacity was inserted into the intake manifold to simulate multi-cylinder engines. With the large capacity volume, LC can decrease the pumping loss and then increase the mechanical efficiency. Increasing the expansion ratio from 11 to 23.9 with LC application can produce about 13% improvement of thermal efficiency which was suggested to be caused by the increased cycle efficiency. The decrease of compression ratio from 11 to 5.5 gives little effect on the thermal efficiency if the expansion ratio could be kept constant. Thus, the expansion ratio is revealed to be a determining factor for cycle efficiency, while compression ratio is no more important, which suggests the usefulness of controlling the intake charge with intake valve closure timing. These were successfully explained by simple thermodynamic calculation and thus the mechanism could be verified by the estimation.

  • Clean development mechanism (CDM) validity study was conducted to suggest better and more adaptable CDM scenario on water treatment plant (WTP). Potential four scenarios for CDM project; improvement of intake pumping efficiency, hydro power plant construction, solar panel construction and system optimization of mechanical mixing process were evaluated on S-WTP in Korea. Net present value (NPV) of each scenario was estimated based on sensitivity analysis with the variable factors to investigate the CDM validity percentile. Hydro power plant construction was the best option for CDM business with 97.76% validity and $1,127,069 mean profit by 9,813 $tonsCO_2e$/yr reduction. CDM validity on improvement of intake pumping efficiency was 90.2% with $124,305 mean profit by huge amount of $CO_2$ mitigation (10,347 $tonsCO_2e$/yr). System optimization of mechanical mixing process reduced 15% of energy consumption (3,184 $tonsCO_2e$/yr) and its CDM validity and mean profit was 77.25% and $23,942, respectively. Solar panel construction could make the effect of 14,094 $tonsCO_2$ mitigation annually and its CDM validity and mean profit was 64.68% and $228,487, respectively.

  • Shallow alluvial groundwaters in Korea of tell exceed the Korean Drinking Water Standard for dissolved iron (0.3 mg/L), which is one of the important water quality problems, especially in the use of bank infiltration technique. Using the reactive transport modeling, in this study we simulated the effectiveness of injection-and-pumping technique to remove dissolved iron in groundwater. The results of simulation showed that pumping of groundwater after injection of oxygenated water into aquifers is very effective to acquire the permissible water quality level. Groundwater withdrawal up to several times of irjected water in volume can be applicable to yield drinkable water. Potential problems such as clogging and permeability lowering due to in-situ precipitation of iron hydroxides may be insignificant. We also discuss on the mechanism and spatial extent of iron removal in aquifer.
