  • Effect of pump combinations on the vacuum characteristics of vacuum system was simulated for optimum design of system. In this investigation, the feasibility of modelling mechanism for VacSimMulti simulator was proposed. Simulation results of various pumping combinations showed the possibilities and reliabilities of simulation for the performance of vacuum system in specific semiconductor processing. Simulation of roughing pump presented the expected pumping behaviors based on commercial specifications of employed pumps. Application of booster pump exhibited the high pumping efficiency for middle vacuum range. Combinations of optimum backing pump for diffusion and turbo vacuum system were obtained. And, the predictable characteristics of process application of both simulated systems were also acquired.

  • As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are an unpleasant insect. However, there are several unknown natural secretes related with mosquitoes. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking process of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study is to understand the mosquito's blood sucking mechanism that can be used to resolve the problem encountered in the injection or transport of infinitesimal biological fluids in a micro-chip. At first, the velocity fields of blood-sucking flow in a proboscis were measured using a micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity signals of flow in the proboscis show periodic variation. This seems to be resulted from the beating of the pharyngeal pump which works as driving power. To analyze the pumping mechanism, the temporal variation of the pharyngeal pump was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The volume variation was estimated by the help of digital image processing techniques. Once the main mechanism of blood sucking process was found, a effective micro-pumping system with high efficiency would be developed in near future.

  • Nitrite accumulation is not unusual in batch processes such as sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with high-strength of ammonium or nitrate wastewaters. A possible mechanism of nitrite inhibition on Acinetobacter was depicted in a biochemical model, which the protonated species, nitrous acid form of nitrite, affects proton relating transport at the proton-pumping site crossing the cell membrane under unlimited carbon and phosphorus conditions. This effect exerts inhibition of phosphorylation under aerobic condition and yields low APT/ADP ratio, consequently decrease poly-P synthesis and phosphorus uptake from outside the cell in the model.

In this investigation, the feasibility of modelling mechanism for $VacSim^{Multi}$ simulator was proposed. Simulation results of pumping design factor showed the possibilities of simulation fore-study for the detailed design factors. Simulation of roughing pump presented the expected pumping behaviors based on the specifications of commercial pump. Application of booster pump exhibited the high pumping efficiency for middle vacuum range. Combinations of optimum backing pump for diffusion and turbo vacuum system were obtained. • A valveless pump consisting of a pumping chamber with an elastic tube was simulated using an immersed boundary method. The interaction between the motion of the elastic tube and the pumping chamber generated a net flow toward the outlet through a full cycle of the pump. The net flow rate of the valveless pump was examined by varying the stretching coefficient, bending coefficient, and aspect ratio of the elastic tube. Photographs of the fluid velocity vectors and the wave motions of the elastic tube were examined over one cycle of the pump to gain a better understanding of the mechanism underlying the valveless pump. The relationship between the gap in the elastic tube and the average flow rate of the pump was analyzed.

  • A/F sensor with a sensing and a pumping element, which is made of YSZ(yttria stabilized zirconia) sheets, can be used for the combustion control of lean burn engine. A/F sensor can detect the oxygen partial pressure in more wide range than the other oxygen sensors, such as the limiting current type oxygen sensor and λ-sensor. However this sensor has the disadvantage that the characteristics has been degraded rapidly due to the physical or electrochemical reasons. The blackening phenomenon is known as one of the degradations caused by high voltage biased for oxygen pumping. In this paper, we have studied to analyze the blackening phenomenon by comparing two characteristics between before and after blackening in impedance spectroscopy, and discussed the blackening mechanism.

  • We have detected a SiO maser line (v=1, J=2- 1) for 15 stars out of about 80 long period variables in the wide range of period. No new sources are detected; all detected sources are variables with period longer than 300 days; no evidence is found that the dust grains in the outer envelope have influenced on this line. The time variation of this maser line for 7 stars, T Cep, ${\mu} Cep$, U Her, R Leo, R Lmi, U Ori, and R Ser is observed and compared with optical light curve at the same epoch of maser observation. No universial relation between the time variation and the optical light curve is found. It implies that the radiation from a central star does not much play an important role for the direct pumping of the SiO maser line.

  • We present a novel micropump of which pumping mechanism is based upon MHD (Magnetohydrodynamic) principle. The MHD micropump uses Lorentz force as pumping source. In the MHD micropump, Lorentz force is applied into initially stagnant conducting fluid to drive it in magnetic and electric field to flow in both directions. The performance of the MHD micropump is obtained by measuring the pressure head difference and flow rate as applied voltage changes from 10 to 60 V DC at 0.19 and 0.44 Tesla. The pressure head difference is 18 mm at 38 mA and the flow rate is 63 ${\mu}{\ell}$ /min at 1.8 mA when the inside diameter of inlet/outlet tube is 2 mm and the magnetic flux density is 0.44 Tesla.
