  • One of the major causes of concrete pavement deterioration is the loss of support due to erosion and pumping of subbase and subgrade. In this study, procedures for the detection of voids under concrete pavement slab are presented using nondestructive test method such as FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) and GPR(Ground Penetration Radar). The deflection responses of concrete slab obtained in FWD field test are analysed for determining the presence of void. Also, reflection responses in GPR test are interpreted. It was concluded that these procedures are available for detecting the viods under concrete pavement slab.

  • Transitional zones, one of the typical weak area of earthworks, require lasting a maintenance work due to a differential stiffness of substructures. It is very difficult problem that transition zone was perfectively prevented against a differential settlement. The transitional zone will deteriorate at an accelerate rate. This may lead to pumping ballast, swinging or hanging sleepers, permanent rail deformations, worn track components, and loss of surface and gauge. In this study, it is performed that settlement behavior in transitional zone was compared with small model test.

  • To cope with recent high gas prices and global warming phenomenon, the latest gasoline engine technologies are focusing on direction injection, downsizing by turbo charging, variable compression ratio, controlled auto Ignition to enhance fuel efficiency and satisfy emission regulations. The variable valve train technology will be a basement for these innovative technologies in internal combustion engines and is supposed to play a key role to improve low thermal efficiency and pumping loss in gasoline engine caused by low compression ratio and throttled operation respectively.

  • This paper presents an effective way of improving fuel consumption for a variable displacement engine. The improvement of fuel consumption can be accomplished by means of deactivating inlet and exhaust valves, reducing the number of effective cylinders of a four-cylinder gasoline engine that is mounted on a domestic compact automobile.

  • Piston friction is one of the important but complicated sources of energy loss of a hydraulic axial piston machine. In this paper, two formulas are derived for estimating instantaneous piston friction force and average piston friction moment loss. The derived formula can be applicable for piston guides with or without bushing as well as for axial piston machines of motoring and pumping operations. Through the formula derivation, a typical curve shape of friction force found from several experimental measurements during one revolution of a machine is clearly explained in this paper that it is mainly due to the equivalent friction coefficient dependent on its angular position. Stribeck curve effect can easily be incorporated into the formula by replacing outer and inner friction coefficients at both edges of a piston with the coefficient given by Manring (1999) considering mixed/boundary lubrication effects. Novel feature of the derived formula is that it is represented only by physical dimensions of a machine, hence it allows to estimate the piston friction force and loss moment of a machine without hardworking experimental test.

  • The groundwater heat pump system(GWHP) is one of the most efficient ground source heat pump system(GSHP) which uses low grade and shallow geothermal energy for cooling and heating purpose. The GWHP system shall be designed properly based on peak block load performance and optimum pumping rate of groundwater comparable to ground coupled heat pump system(GCHP). The optimum pumping rate depends on groundwater temperature at a specific site, size of plate heat exchanger, and total head loss occurred by whole system comprising pumps and pipings. The required optimum flow rates of the system per RT are ranged from 3.8 to 9.8lpm being less than the typical building loop flow of 9.5 to 11.4lpm.

  • The influence of Au/Ni-based contact formed on a lightly-doped (7.3×1017cm−3, Zn-doped) InGaAsP layer for electrical compensation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation under various rapid thermal annealing (RTA) conditions has been studied. The active control of SPP propagation is realized by electrically pumping the InGaAsP multiple quantum wells (MQWs) beneath the metal planar waveguide. The metal planar film acts as the electric contact layer and SPP waveguide, simultaneously. The RTA process can lower the metal-semiconductor electric contact resistance. Nevertheless, it inevitably increases the contact interface morphological roughness, which is detrimental to SPP propagation. Based on this dilemma, in this work we focus on studying the influence of RTA conditions on electrical control of SPPs. The experimental results indicate that there is obvious degradation of electrical pumping compensation for SPP propagation loss in the devices annealed at 400℃ compared to those with no annealing treatment. With increasing annealing duration time, more significant degradation of the active performance is observed even under sufficient current injection. When the annealing temperature is set at 400℃ and the duration time approaches 60s, the SPP propagation is nearly no longer supported as the waveguide surface morphology is severely changed. It seems that eutectic mixture stemming from the RTA process significantly increases the metal film roughness and interferes with the SPP signal propagation.

  • $Er^{3+}$ ion shows a stable and efficient luminescence at 1.54mm due to its $^4I_{13/2}\;{\rightarrow}\;^4I_{15/2}$ intra-4f transition. As this corresponds to the low-loss window of silica-based optical fibers, Er-based light sources have become a mainstay of the long-distance telecom. In most telecom applications, $Er^{3+}$ ions are excited via resonant optical pumping. However, if nanocluster-Si (nc-Si) are co-doped with $Er^{3+}$, $Er^{3+}$ can be excited via energy transfer from excited electrical carriers in the nc-Si as well. This combines the broad, strong absorption band of nc-Si with narrow, stable emission spectra of $Er^{3+}$ to allow top-pumping with off-resonant, low-cost broadband light sources as well as electrical pumping. A widely used method to achieve nc-Si sensitization of $Er^{3+}$ is high-temperature annealing of Er-doped, non-stoichiometric amorphous thin film with excess Si (e.g.,silicon-rich silicon oxide(SRSO)) to precipitate nc-Si and optically activate $Er^{3+}$ at the same time. Unfortunately, such precipitation and growth of nc-Si into Er-doped oxide matrix can lead to $Er^{3+}$ clustering away from nc-Si at anneal temperatures much lower than ${\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ that is necessary for full optical activation of $Er^{3+}$ in $SiO_2$. Recently, silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRSN) was reported to be a promising alternative to SRSO that can overcome this problem of Er clustering. But as nc-Si formation and optical activation $Er^{3+}$ remain linked in Er-doped SRSN, it is not clear which mechanism is responsible for the observed improvement. In this paper, we report on investigating the effect of separating the nc-Si formation and $Er^{3+}$ activation by using hetero-multilayers that consist of nm-thin SRSO or SRSN sensitizing layers with Er-doped $SiO_2$ or $Si_3N_4$ luminescing layers.

  • It is unreasonable to calculate the amount of agricultural water use by applying unit demand method, because it is different from other water use due to the return flow and reuse in the recycle of watershed. Data from irrigation pumping station and reservoir were analysed. Factors for water balance are precipitation, evapotranspiration, percolation, runoff, and management loss, etc. Here in the study, the amount of agricultural water was defined in the way of three different categories. First one is "Gross water" including evapotranspiration, percolation, and management loss. Second one is "Agricultural water" including Gross water and effective rainfall. Third one is "Broad water" which is abstracting the return flow from Agricultural water.

  • Arm-type implements of tractor are mainly utilized for the slope land operation. The proposed hydraulic system was implemented to arm-type implements of tractor. An experiment was conducted to evaluate response characteristics of the designed arm-type implement control system attached by three-point hitch of tractor at various conditions, such as engine speed, pumping rate and cylinder input flow. Effects of the valve response time didn't affect engine speed. The flow rate of pump and cylinder changed to the pressure loss. Also, the pressure loss was within 2 MPa and the response characteristic was sufficient enough to use as the arm-type implement system.
