  • An experimental variable rate nursery sprayer was developed to adjust application rates for canopy volume in real time. The sprayer consisted of two vertical booms integrated with ultrasonic sensors, and variable rate nozzles coupled with pulse width modulation (PMW) based solenoid valves. A custom-designed microcontroller instructed the sensors to detect canopy size and occurrence and then controlled nozzles to achieve variable application rates. A spray delivery system, which consisted of diaphragm pump, pressure regulator and 4-cycle gasoline engine, offered the spray discharge function. Spray delay time, time adjustment in spray trigger for the leading distance of the sensor, was measured with a high-speed camera, and it was from 50 to 140 ms earlier than the desired time (398 ms) at 3.2 km/h under indoor conditions. Consequently, the sprayer triggered 4.5 to 12.5 cm prior to detected targets. Duty cycles of the sprayer were from 20 to 34 ms for senor-to-canopy (STC) distance from 0.30 to 0.76 m. Outdoor test confirmed that the nozzles were triggered from 290 to 380 ms after detecting tree canopy at 3.2 km/h. The spray rate of the new sprayer was 58.4 to 85.2% of the constant application rate (935 L/ha). Spray coverage was collected at four areas of evergreen canopy by water sensitive papers (WSP), and ranged from 1.9 to 41.1% and 1.8 to 34.7% for variable and constant rate applications, respectively. One WSP area had significant (P < 0.05) difference in mean spray coverage between two application conditions.

  • Purpose: We tested whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) improved recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats with transplantation of adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ATSCs). Methods: Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250 g, female) were used. Moderate spinal cord injury was induced at the T9 level by a New York University (NYU) impactor. The rat ATSCs (approximately $5{\times}10^5$ cells) were injected into the perilesional area at 9 days after SCI. Starting four days after transplantation, rTMS (25 Hz, 0.1 Tesla, pulse width=$370{\mu}s$, on/off time=3 sec/3 sec) was applied daily for 7 weeks. Functional recovery was assessed using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating scale as well as pain responses for thermal and cold stimuli. Results: Both groups showed similar, gradual improvement of locomotor function. rTMS stimulation decreased thermal and cold hyperalgesia after 7 weeks, but sham stimulation did not. Conclusion: rTMS after transplantation of ATSCs in an SCI model may reduce thermal hyperalgesia and cold allodynia, and may be an adjuvant therapeutic tool for pain control after stem cell therapy in SCI.

  • Low-temperature grown (LTG) InGaAs epilayers were grown by MBE technique for studying a correlation between terahertz (THz) emission and the intrinsic defects. The 1.2-um-thick Be-compensated LTG-InGaAs epilayers were prepared on SI-InP:Fe substrate at $200-250^{\circ}C$, and subsequently in-situ annealed under As environment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5-30 minutes. The carrier concentration/mobility and the crystalline structure were analyzed by the Hall effect and the x-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively, and the carrier lifetime were determined by the fs time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. THz generation from LTG-InGaAs was carried out by a Ti-sapphire laser (800 nm) of a pulse width of 190 fs at a repetition of 76 MHz. Figure shows the spectral amplitude of generated waves in the THz region. As the growth temperature of epilayer increases, the amplitude is enhanced. However, two samples grown at $200^{\circ}C$, as-grown and annealed, show almost no difference in the spectral amplitude. This suggests that the growth temperature is critical in the formation of defect states involved in THz emission. We are now investigating the correlations between the XRD band attributed to defects, the Hall parameter, and the spectral amplitude of generated THz wave.

  • Pulsed eddy current (PEC) testing signals have typically been obtained from the electromotive force induced in a sensor coil. However, an increasing number of studies have elected to incorporate the Hall plate as a sensor. Thus, accurate numerical modeling of the Hall sensor signal is necessary. In this study, a PEC probe is designed and a numerical modeling program is written so that Hall sensor signals and coil sensor signals can be calculated simultaneously. First, a step current is used as the input current. The predicted Hall sensor signals show similar characteristics to those of the experimental signals reported by other researchers. The characteristics of the two types of signals are then analyzed and compared as the thickness of test object changes. The results show that the Hall sensor signal provides less information for evaluating the thickness of the test object than the coil sensor signal. The response signals from a pulsed input current are also calculated, and it is confirmed that an equivalent reversed signal pattern appeared after the pulse width at both signals.

  • We have investigated the output characteristics of a Nd:YAG oscillator with a Stimulated Brillouin Scattering phase conjugation mirror (SBS-PCM). FC-75 is used as an SBS gain medium and Cr:YAG (T=50%) as a Q-switcher. The SBS-PCM consists of an SBS-cell and a simple plano-convex focusing lens system. For the case of not using a Q-switcher, an SBS-cell doesn't work as a phase conjugation mirror. For the case of using a Q-switcher, the energy characteristics remains nearly the same whether using the SBS-cell or not using it. The pulse width is reduced from 50 ns to 40 ns by an SBS-PCM. When the SBS-cell is used with a Q- switcher, the SBS-cell works very well as a phase conjugation mirror and its beam-profile is improved dramatically. And in order to explain the progression of beam-profile, we propose a simple model based on the nonlinear reflectivity of the SBS-PCM, whose reflectivity is dependent on the pumping intensity at the focal plane.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to determine whether electroacupuncture(EA) is effective in reducing pain on the severe ankle sprain classified as grade 3 in rats. Methods : The severe(grade 3) ankle sprain model was induced surgically by ankle ligament injury(the anterior talofibular, the calcaneofibular and the posterior talofibular) in the Sprague-Dawley rats(180~250 g). The effects of EA on weight bearing forces(WBR) of the affected foot were examined in a rat model of ankle sprain. EA was applied to either SI6, ST37, GB34, GB39 or GB42 acupoints by trains of electrical pulses(2 Hz, 1 ms pulse width, 2 mA intensity) for 15 min. Results : Cutting of the lateral ankle ligament complex produced the severe ankle sprain symptoms as grade 3. EA of the contralateral SI6 resulted in more analgesic effect than one of ipsilateral SI6 even though there was significant effect. EA of the ipsilateral GB34 and GB39 produced potent analgesic effects on the surgical ankle sprained pain behaviors. However, there were no significant analgesic effects in the contralateral GB34 and GB39 EA groups. In addition, both side of ST37 and GB42 did not result in analgesic effect on the surgical ankle sprained rat. Conclusions : The data suggest that EA induced analgesia shows point specificity on the severe ankle sprained pain model classified as grade 3.

  • This paper presents a DC-DC buck converter with a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) that can compensates for power efficiency degradation over a wide input range. Its switching frequency is kept at 2 MHz and the delay difference between the High side driver and the Low side driver can be minimized with respect to Process, Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations by adopting the PLL. The operation mode of the proposed DC-DC buck converter is automatically changed to Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or PWM frequency modes according to the load condition (heavy load or light load) while supporting a maximum load current of up to 1.2 A. The PWM frequency mode is used to extend the CCM region under the light load condition for the PWM operation. As a result, high efficiency can be achieved under the light load condition by the PWM frequency mode and the delay compensation with the PLL. The proposed DC-DC buck converter is fabricated with a $0.18{\mu}m$ BCD process, and the die area is $3.96mm^2$. It is implemented to have over a 90 % efficiency at an output voltage of 5 V when the input range is between 8 V and 20 V. As a result, the variation in the power efficiency is less than 1 % and the maximum efficiency of the proposed DC-DC buck converter with the PLL is 95.4 %.

  • With increased human activity in space, the risk of re-entry and collision between space objects is constantly increasing. Hence, the need for space situational awareness (SSA) programs has been acknowledged by many experienced space agencies. Optical and radar sensors, which enable the surveillance and tracking of space objects, are the most important technical components of SSA systems. In particular, combinations of radar systems and optical sensor networks play an outstanding role in SSA programs. At present, Korea operates the optical wide field patrol network (OWL-Net), the only optical system for tracking space objects. However, due to their dependence on weather conditions and observation time, it is not reasonable to use optical systems alone for SSA initiatives, as they have limited operational availability. Therefore, the strategies for developing radar systems should be considered for an efficient SSA system using currently available technology. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance of a radar system in detecting and tracking space objects. With the radar system investigated, the minimum sensitivity is defined as detection of a $1-m^2$ radar cross section (RCS) at an altitude of 2,000 km, with operating frequencies in the L, S, C, X or Ku-band. The results of power budget analysis showed that the maximum detection range of 2,000 km, which includes the low earth orbit (LEO) environment, can be achieved with a transmission power of 900 kW, transmit and receive antenna gains of 40 dB and 43 dB, respectively, a pulse width of 2 ms, and a signal processing gain of 13.3 dB, at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. We defined the key parameters of the radar following a performance analysis of the system. This research can thus provide guidelines for the conceptual design of radar systems for national SSA initiatives.

  • A novel capacitance deviation-to-time interval converter based on ramp-integration is presented. It consists of two current mirrors, two schmitt triggers, and control digital circuits by the upper and lower sides, symmetrically. Total circuit has been with discrete components. The results show that the proposed converter has a linearity error of less than 1% at the time interval(pulse width) over a capacitance deviation from 295 pF to 375 pF. A capacitance deviation of 40pF and time interval of 0.2 ms was measured for sensor capacitance of 335 pF. Therefore, the high-resolution can be known by counting the fast and stable clock pulses gated into a counter for time interval. The application of a novel capacitance deviation-to time interval converter to a digital humidity controller is also presented. The presented circuit is insensitive to the capacitance difference in disregard of voltage source or temperature deviation. Besides the accuracy, it features the small MOS device count integrable onto a small chip area. The circuit is thus particularly suitable for the on-chip interface.
