  • The relmund hammer test and ultrasonic pulse velocity test methods are commonly used to determine the in-situ compressive strength of concrete. One of the special feature of these methods is that they cannot give consistent and reliable results for variety of structures. In particular, very old existing structures have been generally received sreious environmental affectsand thus the strength prediction will be different from normal structures. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to propose realistic equations to predict the in-situ strengths of actual old concrete structures. The rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests, carbonation depth measurments and core compressive strength measurements have been carried out for very old hydraulic and seacoast concrete structures spanning from one to about seventy years in age. From these test results, the strength-rebound number relations, the strength-pluse velocity relatinns and the strength-rebound number-pluse velocity relations have been obtained through multiple regression analysis. The present study indicates that the existing equations by nondestructive tests give quite different results from the present data. The proposed equations reasonably well predict the measured data for old concrete structures, especially for low strength concrete. The prediction equations proposed here can be efficiently used in determining the in-situ strength of old concrete structures.

  • Several non-destructive test methods have been developed to estimate compressive strength of concrete in other countries. However, their applications are limited in domestic concrete due to their inaccuracies. The purpose of this study is to propose an aging coefficient of compressive strength of structural concrete in rebound number method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method for domestic concrete. The test variables include type of aggregate, curing condition, and compressive strength. Two approaches are used to estimate aging coefficient. One is evaluated by uniform linear regression equation for all ages and shows uniform strength reduction coefficient regardless of material properties and the other is evaluated by individual regression equation for each ages and shows nonuniform strength reduction and rebound increasing coefficients which decrease with increasing of rebound number and compressive strength. The latter result which can include the effect of rebound number and compressive strength is more resonable than the former.

  • This study examined effects of 12 weeks of body weight based combined exercise training (resistance training for 30 min, aerobic training for 30min) on body composition (% body fat, lean body mass, fat mass and BMI (body mass index)) and cardiovascular factors (ankle-brachial index (ABI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV)) in elderly women. A total of 32 subjects participated in this study, and were randomly divided into either exercise group (n = 16, EG) or control group (n = 16, CG). All variables at pre-test were analyzed by independent t-test for baseline test, and all data post the study period were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA with contrast testing (α = 0.05). Our results indicate that body composition (% body fat, lean body mass, fat mass and BMI) in both EG and CG do not differ significantly. However, the right and left sides of baPWV in EG was significantly reduced, as compared to CG. Taken together, these results indicate that combined exercise training for 12 weeks positively influences the cardiovascular factors, and may prevent cardiovascular diseases in elderly females (over 65 years), thereby resulting in increased quality of life for the elderly.

  • Background : Oxygen concentrators are convenient to operate and economical for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, oxygen concentrators are not manufactured domestically and the COPD patients are currently treated with imported oxygen concentrators. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of domestically developed prototype oxygen concentrator before clinical application, the efficacy and safety of the domestic oxygen concentrator were evaluate by comparing with the imported one. Material and Methods : The clinical tests were performed on 36 hyperhydrosis patients from April 1999 to August 1999. Domestic and imported oxygen concentrators were in turn applied to the same patient, who inspired oxygen for 60 minutes at a rate of 3 liters per minute through nasal prong. The oxygen concentrator, which was applied first, was randomly allocated. The arterial partial oxygen pressure ($PaO_2$) was estimated to compare the efficacy; and the carboxy hemoglobin(COHb), pH, arterial $CO_2$ partial pressure, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate to compare the safety before and after applying each oxygen concentrator. A student t-test was used to analyze the results. Result : In respect to efficacy, the difference in the change of $PaO_2$ before and after the application between two concentrators was not statistically significant. In respect to safety, the differences in the changes of COHb, pH, partial pressure of arterial $CO_2$, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration rate between two concentrators were also not statistically significant. Conclusion : The domestically developed oxygen concentrator, showed satisfactory efficacy and safety when compared with the imported one.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this cross-over experimental study was to examine effects of music intervention on maternal anxiety, fetal heart rate pattern and testing time during non-stress tests (NST) for antenatal fetal assessment. Methods: Sixty pregnant women within 28 to 40 gestational weeks were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=30) or control group (n=30). Music intervention was provided to pregnant women in the experimental group during NST. Degree of maternal anxiety and fetal heart rate pattern were our primary outcomes. State-trait anxiety inventory, blood pressure, pulse rate, and changes in peripheral skin temperature were assessed to determine the degree of maternal anxiety. Baseline fetal heart rate, frequency of acceleration in fetal heart rate, fetal movement test and testing time for reactive NST were assessed to measure the fetal heart rate pattern Results: The experimental group showed significantly lower scores in state anxiety than the control group. There were no significant differences in systolic blood pressure and pulse rate between the two groups. Baseline fetal heart rate was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. Frequency of acceleration in fetal heart rate was significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group. There were no significant differences in fetal movement and testing time for reactive NST between the two groups. Conclusion: Present results suggest that music intervention could be an effective nursing intervention for alleviating anxiety during non-stress test.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise on blood inflammatory factors, DHEA-s and arterial stiffness in elderly women. The subjects were 42 elderly females volunteers, aged 70 to 85 years, composed of the combined exercise group (n=21) and control group (n=21). The 60 minute combined exercise program(aquarobics 1 time/week, strength exercise 2 times/week) was performed 3 times per week for 12 weeks, and the intensity was progressively increased every 4 weeks(1-4 weeks: RPE 12 to 13, 5-8 weeks: RPE 13 to 14, 9-12weeks: RPE 14 to 15). The test data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA, paired t-test, independent t-test and the alpha level of .05 was set for all tests of significance. As a result, the combined exercise for 12 weeks reduced the inflammatory response of elderly women, and DHEA-s was found to have a positive effect on aging hormone. The arterial stiffness decreased the central arterial blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), prevented the increase of the pulse pressure and the wave increase index, and decreased the pulse wave velocity. These results suggest that regular and continuous combined exercise may be recommended for the healthy aging and longevity of elderly women by inducing anti-inflammation effect and improving the aging hormonal function and the vascular health.

  • Background: To compare the anesthetic efficacy of supplemental buccal infiltration (BI) (1.7 ml) versus intraligamentary (IL) injection containing 0.4 ml of 4% articaine with 1:100.000 epinephrine after an inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) with 1.7 ml 2% lidocaine in the first and second mandibular molars diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis (IP). Methods: One hundred subjects diagnosed with IP of either the mandibular first (n = 50) or second molars (n = 50) and failed profound anesthesia following an IANB were selected. They randomly received either the IL or BI techniques of anesthesia. Pain scores on a 170 mm Heft-Parker visual analog scale were recorded initially, before, and during supplemental injections. Furthermore, pulse rate was measured before and after each supplemental injection. During the access cavity preparation and initial filing, no or mild pain was assumed to indicate anesthetic success. The chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and independent samples t-test were used for the analyses. Results: The overall success rates were 80% in the IL group and 74% in the BI group, with no significant difference (P = 0.63). In the first molars, there was no significant difference between the two techniques (P = 0.088). In the second molars, IL injection resulted in a significantly higher success rate (P = 0.017) than BI. IL injection was statistically more successful (P = 0.034) in the second molars (92%) than in the first molars (68%). However, BI was significantly more successful (P = 0.047) in the first molars (88%) than in the second molars (64%). The mean pulse rate increase was significantly higher in the IL group than in the BI group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Both the IL and BI techniques were advantageous when used as supplemental injections. However, more favorable outcomes were observed when the second molars received IL injection and the first molars received BI.

  • To reject the Doppler frequency spectrum dispersion of clutter caused by high-speed antenna rotation of MTI radar system due to terrain characteristics, signal processing parameters(MTI filter constant, M/N detector ration, K-factor and offset of CFAR) are adjusted for the optimal elimination of the ground clutter. For this investigation, logging equipment is designed and utilized for the collection of classified ground clutter data. Test case is devised through Matlab simulation for the classified analysis and optimization of clutter rejection. Then indoor radar test and outside test in accordance with terrain characteristics are repeatedly performed for the verification of the test. This whole process is through the evolutional development model and repeated for the optimization. Final result is that ground-clutter rejection capability is 5.6 times(7.5 dB) better than that of existing radar system.

  • Recently harbor remodeling projects are seriously considered to enhance the loading and unloading capability of old container terminals and to make decrepit ports as eco-friendly harbor and waterfront spaces in many countries. In such a case, quantitative and qualitative evaluations on concrete harbor facilities are mandatory to determine the current structural integrity condition of aged materials. Once the remodeling project is determined to be carried out, the reusability of individual structural members and facilities including caissons, cell-blocks, and tetra-pods need to be decided based on the simple and economic visual inspection and/or nondestructive testing. In this study, the systematic quantitative evaluation procedure for determining the structural integrity condition and the reusability is studied based the nondestructive testing and evaluation methods. Conventional methods including Schmidt hammer test and ultrasonicpulse velocity methods and elastic wave based methods including impact echo test and surface wave test are applied to the old harbor facilities in five different sites. The compressive tests are also carried out to determine the elastic modulus and compressive strength of concrete materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether removal of gingival epithelium with pulsed Nd :YAG laser could inhibit the downgrowth of junctional epithelium after alloplastic material grafting in periodontal bone defect. The periodontal bone defects were created surgically on the palatal aspect of the upper right and left molar teeth in 30 rats and filled with resorbable calcium carbonate($Biocoral\;450^{(R)}$: Inoteb, France). The control sites(right molar area) was sutured. The test side (left molar area) received controlled deepithelization of the oral and sulcular epithelium with pulsed Nd:YAG laser($Sunrise\;Maste^{(R)}$: Sunrise Technologies, U.S.A.) under the mode of 1.75W, 15Hz, 116mJ/pulse and was sutured. The control and test sites were evaluated clinically and histologically, at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days postoperation. Clinically, the gingiva showed normal color and shape at the 5th day in the control site and at the 10th day in the test sites. Histologically, the junctional epithelium was formed at the 7th day in the control sites and at the 14th day in the test sites, and the long JE attachment were observed at the 28th day in both sites. The attachment of connective tissue to root surface was observed initially at the 7th day in the control sites and at the 14th day in the test sites, and completed at the 28th day in both sites. In summary, these results showed that the removal of oral epithelium using pulsed Nd:YAG Laser could not prevent epithelial downgrowth after alloplastic material implantation in rat periodontal bone defect.
