증례보고: MRI 검사시 귓불에 부착한 산소측정기로 인해 발생한 전층 화상 (MRI-Induced Full Thickness Burn on the Ear Lobule due to Pulse Oximetry: A Case Report)

  • Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) has been used as a safe, conventional and harmless diagnostic tool. However, thermal injuries have frequently been reported during MRI scanning due to the heat generated by the reaction with the magnetic field. It is recommended that metal-containing monitoring devices such as pulse oximetry and ECG monitoring leads should be removed prior to the start of the MRI scan, but these monitoring devices are inevitably placed in children or patients in the intensive care unit who have low compliance with the scan. Since the interaction between the metal probe or wire loop of pulse oximetry and the magnetic field can result in high thermal conduction, full-thickness burn can occur over the entire body surface during the MRI examination. Several cases of thermal burns from pulse oximetry on the fingers have been reported. However, we present a case of a full-thickness burn arising left earlobe in a 2-month-old child caused by the high conduction heat from pulse oximetry metal probe.

Electric current control of creation and annihilation of sub-100 nm magnetic bubbles examined by full-field transmission soft X-ray microscopy

  • The effect of electric current pulses on a sub-100 nm magnetic bubble state in a symmetric Pt/Co multilayer was directly observed using a full-field transmission soft X-ray microscope (MTXM). Field-induced evolution of the magnetic stripe domains into isolated bubbles with their sizes down to 100 nm was imaged under varying external magnetic fields. Electric current pulses were then applied to the created magnetic bubbles, and it was observed that the bubbles could be either created or annihilated by the current pulse depending on the strength of applied magnetic field. The results suggest that the Joule heating plays a critical role in the formation and/or elimination of the bubbles and skyrmions. Finally, the schematic phase diagram for the creation and annihilation of bubbles is presented, suggesting an optimized scheme with the combination of magnetic field and electric current necessary to utilize skyrmions in the practical devices.

An Optimization of the 3D $^{1}H-^{15}N-^{1}H$ TOCSY-HSQC and NOESY-HSQC Experiments Using Sensitivity Enhancement with Gradient Selection

  • Proper pulse sequences and experimental optimization for the 3D 15N edited TOCSY and NOESY spectra were described. Using sensitivity enhancement approach with coherent selection by pulsed field gradients described by Kay and co-workers, an considerable gain in sensitivity was achieved. The sensitivity was also improved by minimal water saturation using water flip-back pulse. Among the three types of TOCSY mixing pulse, named MLEV-17, DIPSI-2rc, DIPSI-2rc sequence gave the most sensitive spectrum. These results suggest an appropriate pulse sequence for for those 3D experiments for large proteins.

소용량 교류 MHD발전기에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experiment on Small A.C. MHD Power Generator)

  • This paper is to investigate the A.C generation of MHD engine, converting directly the kinetic energy of conductive gas in high temperature to electric power by the effect of magnetic field. It is known that there are at least two kinds of method in A.C MHD power generation; one, by sending stationary plasma flow in an alternating or rotating magnetic field and the other, by transmission of pulse type plasma flow in uniform and constant magnetic field, former method is adopted here. In order to raise the total efficiency of close cycle in combination with nuclear power and MHD genertaion, an argon plasma jet is utilized as heat source, which is not mixed with the seed material, and the design data are obtained for A.C MHD generation in small capacity, but induced voltage and power output have the maximum values, 15 voltages and 7.5W respectively due to plasma flow with low conductivity and weak magnetic field.

경두개 자기자극장치의 치료자극 펄스 (Treatment Stimulator's Pulse of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

  • 본 논문에서, 생물계로 자기자극장치를 사용할 경우 잠재적인 사용에 대한 전력소자 응용제어 기술에 대해 언급 하고자 한다. 자기자극장치의 효과는 자기 자극코일에 의해 전달된 전류 펄스파형에 유도한 전계와 기하학 구성에 의존한다. TMS는 두뇌에 있는 전계를 유도하는 전자장의 펄스를 머리의 외부에서 자극하게 된다. TMS는 두뇌의 자극을 통해, 진단 및 치료에 있는 수많은 응용이 가능하다. 이러한 요소들은 코일의 구성과 전원 장치와 크기의 등가적 요구와 특성으로 매우 중요한 기능을 가지게 된다. 제안하고자 하는 해결방법은 입력에 대하여 가변크기와 주기를 가지는 전류펄스 발생을 가진다. 또한, 해결방법은 전원에서 부하로 에너지 전송과 축적의 요소를 기본으로 할 수가 있다. 제안한 방식으로, 전력 회로 매개 변수의 충분한 통제를 통한 기획과 전략으로 단극파형 또는 양극 파형을 얻을 수가 있었다.

전해조건에 따른 CoFeCu 함금박막의 조성, 우선방위 및 자기적 특성 (Composition and magnetic ProPerties of CoFecu alloys according to electrolysis conditions)

  • The composition, the preferred orientation and the magnetic properties of the CoFeCu alloys electrodepositen under various electrolysis conditions in sulfate baths ware investigated. As the D.C. current density increased, the Co content in alloy electrodeposits increased, while the Cu content decreased and Fe content remained content. The effect of magnetic field up to 300 Oe on the composition of alloys was negligible. The Cu content of the alloys deposited in pulse current increased noticeably with increasing off-time, while the Co and Fe content decreased. The coercivity of the alloys with 3.5 to 7.0wt.% Cu was 1.0 to 2.0 Oe, but increased noticeably above and below that composition. The application of magnetic field during deposition decreased the coercivity of alloys. The saturation flux density of the alloys with 3.5 to 5.0wt.% Cu was relatively high in the range from 16 to 20.7Gauss. The anisotropy field(HK) of the alloys deposited under the magnetic field(50∼300 Oe) ranged from 18 to 22 Oe. The alloys had fcc structure with (111) preferred orientation, whose distribution increased a little with increasing magnetic field.

A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall in the Differentiation of Hemorrhagic and Fatty Lesions Using Short Inversion Time Inversion Recovery: a Case Report

  • Short inversion time inversion recovery (STIR) is widely used for spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) because the pulse sequence of STIR is insensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity and can be used to scan a large field of view. In this case report, we present a case of spinal epidural hematoma with unexpected signal decrease on a STIR image. The MRI showed an epidural mass that appeared with high signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. However, a signal decrease was encountered on the STIR image. This nonspecific decrease of signal in tissue with a short T1 relaxation time that is similar to that of fat (i.e., hemorrhage) could lead to a diagnostic pitfall; one could falsely diagnose this decrease of signal as fat instead of hemorrhage. Awareness of the nonselective signal suppression achieved with STIR pulse sequences may avert an erroneous diagnosis in image interpretation.

  • A Faraday rotator is designed with the HOYA FR-5 rotator glass. We find that traveling light rotates 45$^{\circ}$in the glass when magnetic field intensity is about 3.0$\times$105AT/m. The current of 2.7KA flowing in the coil of the 0cm diameter, 29cm long and 41 windings generates this magnetic field. A pulse forming network is designed for this current of 84 sec duration. The network is analyzed numerically to find the relevant circuit parameters for the flattest current waveform.

MR Insert를 이용한 구조물의 응력파 저감 (Stress Wave Reduction of Structures Using MR Inserts)

  • In this paper, stress wave propagation characteristics of MR(Magneto-rheological) inserts are experimentally investigated. Generally, stress waves of structures such as warships or submarines are induced by shock waves from underwater explosion. Their fatal effects on the shipboard equipments or structures damage the performance of warships. But, such a problem can be solved by controlling the stress waves propagating through structures by means of MR inserts. MR insert consists of two aluminum layers and MR fluid filled in between. Two piezoceramic disks are embedded on the host plate as a transmitter and a receiver of stress waves. Pulse waves are generated by the transmitter and they reach to the receiver through the MR insert. Permanent magnet and magnetic coil are used to produce magnetic field at the MR insert. In the presence of magnetic field, MR particles are arranged in chains parallel to the magnetic field such that the transmitted stress waves are reduced. Attenuation of stress waves is experimentally investigated.
