  • We investigated why aspen extractives are more resistant in kraft pulping than pine extractives. Residual extractives content in aspen kraft pulps were 0.5~1.1% compared with 0.1~0.2% in pine pulps. This different response arises from the different composition of extractives in wood chips. Resin acids in pine were almost completely removed in kraft pulping but those are not existence in aspen. Slower saponification of aspen steryl esters resulted from different chemical structure of aspen steryl esters. Main sterols in aspen steryl esters were 24-methyl cyclolanostenol which was highly resistant to alkaline hydrolysis with its characteristic steric hindrance. Sterols in aspen were not well removed in kraft pulping. The relative composition of sterol in aspen kraft pulps was increased with increasing pulping time. The presence of fatty acids in aspen kraft pulps is considered to unusual. Fatty acids in alkaline are supposed to be well ionized and removed well in the washing stage. Nevertheless, there were significant amount of fatty acids remaining in aspen kraft pulps.

  • In this study, bast fibers, woody parts and whole woods were pulped separately by alkali, alkali-hydrogen peroxide and sulfomethylated processes and their papermaking characteristics for the special Hanji were evaluated. Also properties of new Hanji products obtained from mixed stocks of various ratios were discussed. Solfomethylated pulps were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-peroxide pulps. On the mechanical properties of Hanjis mixed with bast-and woody-parts pulps, and with bast and whole stem pulps, handsheet strengths were decreased with the increasing contents of woody and whole stem pulps. Various Hanjis could make by various mixing of separated cooked Pulps. Especially an excellant Hwaseonji(calligrapy Paper) could be made by one stage cooking of whole stem of paper mulberry by sulfomethylated pulping method.

  • Hwaseonji(Korean traditional paper) used for writing and painting has been made from the mulberry bast-fiber and the short-length fiber pulps, wood pulps. However, besides wood pulps, other short-length fiber pulps also can be used instead of wood pulps. Hence, this research was carried out to make the various Hwaseonjis with the different properties, using the five kinds of short-length fiber pulps respectively. The short-length fiber pulps used in this research were softwood bleached kraft pulp(SwBKP) hardwood bleached kraft pulp(HwBKP), rice-straw bleached sulfite pulp(RsBSP), bamboo bleached kraft pulp(BbBKP) and recycled pulp from vellem paper(RP). And, the mixture ratios of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and short-length fiber pulps were 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 and 20:80. After various Hwaseonjis were made from different mixtures mentioned above with hand-made method, physical properties and chinese ink blot property of each paper were measured. The strengthes were the highest in the Hwaseonji made from the mixture of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and SwBKP. However, chinese ink blot property and smoothness were better when RsBSP, BbBKP or RP were mixed into the mulberry bast-fiber pulp. As a result, the various kinds of Hwaseonjis which the users can choose based on their needs were made.

  • Residual extractives had a noticeable impact on the brightness of unbleached hardwood kraft pulps (trembling aspen). The brightness-impacting extractives were effectively removed by oxygen delignification. In addition, oxygen delignification was more effective in removing chromophores in hardwood unbleached kraft pulps than in those of softwood (loblolly pine). The residual extractives in unbleached hardwood kraft pulps also affected the pulp color, primarily redness and the L value. These redness-related extractives in unbleached hardwood kraft pulps were also effectively removed by oxygen delignification. There were no significant color differences between untreated and solvent-extracted oxygen-delignified aspen kraft pulps. The residual extractives in unbleached and oxygen-delignified softwood (loblolly pine) kraft pulps did not have a significant impact on either brightness or pulp color.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentrations of Leukotriene B4 in relation to the clinical symptom of pulpitis in human dental pulp. Pulps obtained from 3 groups of teeth: normal uniflamed teeth(N=22), asymptomatic teeth with deep caries or large restorations(N = 21) and symptomatic teeth with the clinical diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis(N = 15). Pulps were dissected from normal un inflamed teeth and extirpated from asymptomatic and symptomatic teeth during routine endodontic treatment and stored in liquid nitrogen ($-70^{\circ}C$). The levels of Leukotriene B4 in individual or pooled pulps were measured by radioimmunoassay and the mean levels of each group were compared statistically(Kruskall-Wallis oneway ANOVA test). The results were as followings : 1. In normal pulp, low levels of Leukotriene B4 were measured. 2. In pulps from asymptomatic and symptomatic teeth had significantly higher levels of Leukotriene B4 than normal pulps(p<0.01). 3. The levels of Leukotriene B4 in pulps from symptomatic teeth were significantly higher than those of pulps from asymptomatic teeth(p<0.01). These results suggest that Leukotriene B4 play a cretain role in inflammatory process of dental pulp and have a relationship with clinical symptoms of pulpitis.

  • Traditionally, Hanji had been made only with the bast fiber of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki). Nowadays, Hanji has been made mainly in the mixed forms of paper mulberry bast fiber and waste paper, and consequently it has raised many problems using them. This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of Hanji mixed with paper mulberry bast part and whole stalk pulps. Hanjis made from the solfomethylated pulp were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulps. The brightness of solfomethylated pulp was found to be high enough not to need additional bleaching. The sheet formations were improved as the increase of whole stalk pulp contents, while the sheet strengths were decreased. In the physical properties of the Hanji mixed with bast part and whole stalk pulps, the handsheet strengths were decreased as the increase of the whole stalk pulp contents. The tensile strength and folding endurance of the Hanji containing 40∼60% of whole stalk pulps were higher as compared to the others.

  • This study was carried out to bleach the Oakwood kraft pulp without the elemental chlorine using the xylanase or wastewater(We : wastewater enzymes) effluented from the submerged biofilter reactor containing the fungi, Phanerorhaete sordida YK-624. So in this research, the proper treatment conditions (pH, temperature, dosage and time) were investigated respectively. And after the various kinds of multistage bleaching of pulps, the properties of pulps were tested. From the experimental results, we can conclude as follows. In the treatments of Oakwood kraft pulps with xylanase, the proper pH, temperature, enzyme dosage and time were 8.0, $35^{\circ}C$ , 400 EXU/kg and 1 hr. respectively. And in the case of treatment with a wastewater(We) effluented from the submerged biofilter reactor, the proper pH, temperature and time were 5.5, $37^{\circ}C$ and 2 hr. respectively. On the other hand, Oakwood kraft pulps were bleached by the method of a multistage bleaching using xylanase or We instead of elemental chlorine Consequently the strengthes and brightnesses of pulps bleached by the method mentioned above were lower than those of pulp bleached by the conventional method using the elemental chlorine. But it is possible to improve the brightnesses through the increase of chlorine dioxide dosage or use of hydrogen peroxide in the final bleaching stage.
