Recently, various types of pedicle screws have been developed considering the anatomical structure of the spine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pullout stiffness and strength of two types of commercial pedicle screws. The design of two type screws were single pitched thread (ST) pedicle screw and dual pitched thread (DT) pedicle screw, respectively. The tests were conducted in accordance with the ASTM standards using polyurethane (PU) test blocks which has anatomical structure of the spine. There was no significant difference in pullout stiffness between two types of screw. However, DT exhibited higher pullout strength than ST (p<0.05). Pedicle screw with dual pitched thread showed higher pullout strength without decrease in pullout stiffness compared to the standard pedicle screw. In conclusion, dual pitched thread design of the pedicle screw is considered to be more suitable than the single pitched thread for the anatomical structure of the spine.
Pullout tests are usually employed to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced soil, and the load-displacement curve can be obtained easily. This paper presents an analytical solution for predicting the full-range mechanical behavior of a buried planar reinforcement subjected to pullout based on a bi-linear bond-slip model. The full-range behavior consists of three consecutive stages: elastic stage, elastic-plastic stage and debonding stage. For each stage, closed-form solutions for the load-displacement relationship, the interfacial slip distribution, the interfacial shear stress distribution and the axial stress distribution along the planar reinforcement were derived. The ultimate load and the effective bond length were also obtained. Then the analytical model was calibrated and validated against three pullout experimental tests. The predicted load-displacement curves as well as the internal displacement distribution are in closed agreement with test results. Moreover, a parametric study on the effect of anchorage length, reinforcement axial stiffness, interfacial shear stiffness and interfacial shear strength is also presented, providing insights into the pullout behaviour of planar reinforcements of MSE structures.
A series of pullout tests were carried out on waste tire treadmats of various weave arrangements, with confining stresses ranging from 9 to 59 kPa approximately, in order to investigate the pullout behavior and to apply the results to the design of treadmat reinforced soil structures. A treadmat reinforcement can be considered as belonging to the extensible type thus progressive failure would develop in every tread. The pullout capacity of a treadmat was found to be generally equal to the sum of capacities of the longitudinal treads, with minor enhancement realized due to the presence of transverse treads. Pullout failures occurred in treadmats under light surcharge and with treadmats with higher material presence per unit area, while breakage failures occurred in treadmats under heavier surcharge and with treadmats with higher ratio of opening. The pullout capacity of a treadmat increased with increasing surcharge height and treadmat stiffness. A pullout test on a commercially available geogrid was also carried out for comparison and the pullout capacity of a treadmat was found higher than that of the comparable geogrid under identical loading conditions, indicating the merit of using the treadmat as an alternative to the chosen geogrid.
In this study, pullout tests were carried out to evaluate pullout characteristics of waste fishing net (WFN), which added into bottom ash for recycling both bottom ash and WFN. Three different mesh size of WFN (WFN20:$20mm{\times}20mm$, WFN30:$30mm{\times}30mm$, WFN40:$40mm{\times}40mm$) and geogrid were added as a reinforcement. Pullout characteristics of waste fishing net were compared with those of the geogrid. Pullout test results showed that pullout strength and stiffness of WFN20 are a little less than those of geogrid. However, the pullout friction angle of WFN20 is similar to that of geogrid due to bearing resistance induced from transverse rib because thickness of WFN20 is greater than geogrid. Pullout test results also indicated that distribution of residual strain along reinforcement after test depends on overburden stress. Residual strain at the tip of reinforcement increased with an increase in overburden stress due to concentration of pullout force on the tip of reinforcement.

Pressure grouting is a common technique in geotechnical engineering to increase the stiffness and strength of the ground mass and to fill boreholes or void space in a tunnel lining and so on. Recently, the pressure grouting has been applied to a soil-nailing system which is widely used to improve slope stability. The soil-nailing design has been empirically performed in most geotechnical applications because the interaction between pressurized grouting paste and the adjacent ground mass is complicated and difficult to analyze. The purpose of this study is to analyze the increase of pullout resistance induced by pressurized grouting with the aid of performing laboratory model tests and field tests. In this paper, two main causes of pullout resistance increases induced by pressurized grouting were verified: the increase of residual stress; and the increase of coefficient of pullout friction. From the laboratory tests, it was found that residual stress in borehole increases by pressurized grouting and dilatancy angle could be estimated by cavity expansion theory using the measured wall displacements. From the field test results, the pullout resistance of soil-nailing with pressurized grouting was found to be 10% larger than that of soil-nailing with gravitational grouting, mainly caused by mean normal stress increase and dilatancy effect. So, the pullout resistance could be estimated by considering these two effects. The radial displacement increases with dilatancy angle increase and the dilatancy angle decreases with injection pressure increase. The measured pullout resistance obtained from field tests is in good agreement with the estimated one from the cavity expansion theory.

The mechanically stabilized earth wall abutment is an earth structure using a mechanically stabilized earth wall and it uses in-extensional steel reinforcements having excellent friction performance. In order to analyze the pullout behavior of in-extensional steel reinforcements usually applied on the mechanically stabilized earth wall abutment, effects of stiffness and particle-size distributions of backfills and also horizontal spacings were considered in this study. As a result of parametric analyses, the highest pulling force acted on the uppermost reinforcement, and the stiffness and the particle-size distributions of the backfill significantly affected the pulling resistance of the reinforced soils. The internal friction angle of backfills should be at least 25 degrees, the coefficient uniformity factor should be at least 4, and the horizontal spacing of the uppermost steel reinforcement should be less than 25cm. Therefore, in order to secure the pullout resistance of the reinforced soil, it is necessary a properly spacing of reinforcement and more strict quality control for the backfill.

As offshore activities move into deeper ocean, conventional fixed-base platforms drastically increase in size and cost, One of alternatives available is a guyed tower, in which environmental loads are supported by guylines instead of structural members. The guying system of the guyed tower is designed on one hand to be stiff enough to limit the structural displacement in normal operations, but on the other hand to be soft enough to permit large slow sways during the presence of design-level storms. This compliancy provides an efficient means of withstanding harsh environment so that the disproportionate increase in size of deep water platforms can be kept to a rational limit. Novel configurations contain always some degrees of potential risks mainly due to the lack of experience. The most critical hazard inherent to a guyed tower may be the pullout of anchor piles. Once it happens, the guyline fails to function and it may eventually lead to the total collapse of the system. It is the aim of this paper to discuss and quantify the anchor-pullout risk of a guyed tower. A stochastic analysis is made for evaluating the first-upcrossing probability of the tension acting on anchor piles over the uplift capacity. Nonlinearities involved in the mooring stiffness and hydrodynamics are taken into account by using time-domain analysis. A simplified two dimensional dynamic model is developed to exemplify the underlying concept. Real hurricane data in the Gulf of Mexico spanning over 70 years are incorporated in a numerical example of which result clearly indicates highly potential risk of anchor pullout.

The pull-out test is a common test for detemining the strength and deformation parameters between reinforcement and soil inl the design of reinforced earth structures. It is often assumed in the interpretation of the results from the test that the mobilization of shear strength along the reinforcement is uniform. The progressive shearing at the soil-reinforcement interface during the pull-out test often leads to incorrect calculation of the shear displacement response between the reinforcement and the soil. To investigate the effect of progressive shearing during the calculation of the shear stiffness of the soil-reinforcement interface, the finite element method is used to simulate the pullout test. The reinforcement, soil and interface behaviors are modeled by rosing linear and non-linear constitutive models. Shear stiffnesses are calculated by uaiHg conventional methods. It is found that there are considerable discrepancies 13etween the calculated shear stiffnesses and the correct stiffnesses which are used in the finite element analysis. The amount of error depends on the relative stiffness between reinforcement and soil and the size of the specimen being analyzed. The finite element results are also compared with the observed response from laboratory experiments. A revised interpretation of the pull-out test results is discussed.
The wood-concrete composite can be effectively applied for bridge superstructure, and the concept of fully composite action between each member is one of the most important consideration. Until now, related researches have been done mainly in North America and EU countries not enough to cover the fundamental studies. Therefore, this study is planned to perform one of the important issue for using the wood-concrete composite. The objective of this study is evaluation of shear performance with different anchorage length of steel rebar in wood. Prediction of the yield mode and the reference design value was firstly performed as the preliminary investigation. Then, initial stiffness, yield load and maximum load were derived from the shear test due to different anchorage length of the steel rebar (SD30A in Korean Standard) in wood. It was found out from this study that initial stiffness and yield load are not related with the anchorage length over 20 mm of anchorage length while maximum load shows increasing tendency till 60 mm of anchorage length. Pullout strength of inserted steel rebar in wood is considered to be one reason and this was also verified with the x-ray radiography.
