  • In this study, the stability and economic feasibility of a MSE (Mechanically stability earth) wall with a pre-cast concrete pacing panel was investigated for a standard section of highway. Based on the design criteria, the MSE walls of the panel type were designed considering the load conditions of the highway, such as the dead load of the concrete pavement, traffic load, and impact load of the barrier. The length of the ribbed metal strip was arranged at 0.9H according to the height of the MSE walls. Because the length of the reinforcement was set to 0.9H according to the height of the MSE wall, the external stability governed by the shape of the reinforced soil was not affected by the height increase. The factor of safety (FOS) for the bearing capacity was decreased drastically due to the increase in self-weight according to the height of the MSE wall. As a result of examining the internal stability according to the cohesive gravity method, the FOS of pullout was increased and the FOS of fracture was decreased. As the height of the MSEW wall increases, the horizontal earth pressure acting as an active force and the vertical earth pressure acting as a resistance force are increased together, so that the FOS of the pullout is increased. Because the long-term allowable tensile force of the ribbed metal strip is constant, the FOS of the fracture is decreased by only an increase in the horizontal earth pressure according to the height. The panel type MSE wall was more economical than the block type at all heights. Compared to the concrete retaining wall, it has excellent economic efficiency at a height of 5.0 m or more.

  • The seismic performance and stability of operating facilities installed in domestic power plants need to be verified because of the increased incidence of earthquakes resulting in power plant damage due to the overturning failure of electric operating facilities. In this study, a structural performance evaluation of the anchor bolts constructed to setup the operating facilities on concrete slabs was carried out through an on-site inspection of power plants, called Daechung-Dam. M10 J hook and M12 J hook anchor bolts were installed in the field unit. According to the ASTM E 488-96 specifications, anchor bolt pullout and shear tests were carried out and compared with the anchor-bolt design standards. The results from the tension and shear pullout tests showed that the M10 and M12 J hook anchor bolts had higher performance than the required design load. Thus, they were found to be safe enough. Nevertheless, more research in the field of analytical study will be needed in the near future.

  • Soil nailing is a reinforcement method used for stabilizing excavated wall or slope. Due to its many advantages such as ease of construction and economical efficiency, use of soil nailing is increased. However, the soil nail can't trespass on the neighbor private land, which pays rent for use. For this reason, removable soil nailing system was developed. However, the removal rate of this system is just about $50\sim70%$. To solve this, the Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) soil nailing system, which does not need to be removed and allows for the trespass on the private land, is developed. In this paper, through theoretical and experimental studies in laboratory and field, we evaluate the stability and behavior characteristics of the FRP nail system. Besides, numerical analyses using FLAC2D were performed for various soil conditions, where the simulations for pullout tests were carried out. As a result, compared with the conventional removable soil nailing system, the FRP soil nailing systems show similar behavior characteristics.

  • The soil nailing system is becoming common as reinforcement method of slope face in soil. It has application to obtain slope stability method and scaffolding system. It has some troubles when the soil nailing system is applied to the downtown because it could be invaded someone's private area. Thus, in this paper, wedge type removable soil nailing system which can easily remove deformed bar in final excavation step is developed. Field pull-out test is performed to evaluate deformed bars removal and pullout resistance characteristics. According to this result, application of Wedge Type Removable Soil Nailing System is performed.

  • Soil-nailing is the most popular method of reinforcing for slope stability. In general, two factors are considered as failure modes during the soil-nailing design stages: pullout failure mode and shear failure mode that will occur on the most probable failure plane. In many cases, however, shallow failure can also occur when the ground near the slope face is swept away by the horizontal stress release during the staged top-down excavation. In this paper, an optimized soil-nailing design methodology is proposed by considering the three failure modes mentioned above: pullout failure; shear failure; and shallow failure. The variables to be optimized include the bonded length and number of soil-nailings, and the confining pressure that should be applied at the slope face. The procedure to obtain the optimized design variables is as follows: at first, optimization of soil-nailings, i.e. bonded length and number, against pullout and shear failure modes; and then, optimization of confining pressure at each excavation stage that is needed to prevent shallow failure. Since the two processes are linked with each other, they are repeated until the optimized design variables can be obtained satisfying all the constrained design requirements in both of the two processes.

  • It is very important to verify the seismic performance and stability of the power plant fixture in the domestic power plant, because earthquakes have increased in frequency around the world which resulted in the frequent occurrence of power plant damage caused by the failure of electric power facilities. In this study, through the on-site inspection of power plant fixation unit installed in domestic power plants, we carried out structural performance evaluation of the fixation unit anchor bolts installed on the concrete slabs. The field survey showed M12 J hook anchor bolts were used. Anchor bolt pullout and shear performance evaluation were performed based on ASTM E 488-96 standard. Moreover, artificial crack with the width of 0.5 mm was applied during the experiment based on ATM355.4 and ETAG 001. The comparison of M12 J hook anchor bolt pullout and shear test result to design value required in domestic and international design standard, show a satisfactory result. M12 J hook anchor pullout and shear performance was found to be about 35% and 7%, respectively, higher than the required design value.

  • Nowadays, some studies have been performed for rockbolt method widely used in Korea. To make large slopes, tunnels or rock structures stable, supporting systems, such as anchor bolt, rock bolt which are developed recently, are commonly used. In this study, laboratory pullout tests were carried out to compare the characteristics of rock bolt that is most widely used with ones of rock bolt by newly developed circular model testers. Re-pullout test for the rock bolt in which loading and unloading cycles are repeated several times showed that the maximum pullout load is almost constant irrespective of the number of loading cycles, which may be due to no failure between rock bolt and filler that is filled with soils and concrete as a substitute. A development of rock bolt fillers as supporters using to protect people in tunnels and slopes is reviewed as a probable man-made hazard after excavation works. The functions of the grouted rock bolts associated with reinforcement effects also should be assessed in this study, which develop the sealing apparatus preventing from overflowing mortar out of a rock bolt hole for securing safety in the tunnel and slopes in order to secure stability named the sealing packer.

  • In this study, the applicability and external/internal stability of a MSEW abutment with a slab were investigated. Structural analysis of slab bridges between 10 ~ 20.0 m and thicknesses of 0.7 ~ 0.9 m was carried out to calculate the reaction forces due to dead and live loads acting on the bridge supports. The slab bridge with a length of 20.0 m satisfied the allowable contact pressure of 200 kPa for the true MSEW abutment. Because the external stability of the true MSEW abutment was dominated by the geometry of the MSE wall, the change in the factor of safety due to the load of the super-structure is small. Because the stiffness of the foundations is fixed and the load of the super-structure is increased, the factor of safety of the bearing capacity was reduced. As the load of the super-structure was increased, the horizontal earth pressure of the true MSEW abutment increased greatly. As a result, the pullout and fracture of the uppermost reinforcement, which are the factors of safety, did not meet the design criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the pullout resistance and the long-term allowable tensile force of the reinforcement placed on the top of the reinforced soils to ensure efficient design and performance of a true MSEW abutment.

  • The frequency slope over a year due to climate collapse is connected with huge casualties and property damage, but the situation rarely reduce the damage that gradually increases in size. In order to suppress this, engineers are improved better reinforcement and continued efforts to improve the shear force or withdrawal force. In this study, the GangWhaGu attached to the nail tip that improves the soil nail pullout resistance, and a method to increase the nail integral GangWhaGu maximize the contact area soil - by increasing the friction of the grout seems to increase the effect of slope stability. In order to validate the experiment to determine the effect of reinforcing the soil nail pullout tests of indoor and Behavior GangWhaGu nail and through field tests were conducted and applicability. Experimental results, the case of a pull-out test compared to the GangWhaGu nail through the tensile force of the nail were to increase by approximately 20%.

  • The superiority of bearing ground anchor system has been recognized for the stability and economical efficiency since 1950s in Japan, Europe and etc. The ground anchor introduced in Korea, however, has the structural problem that the tensile strength comes only from the ground frictional force caused by the expansion of the wedge body and it is impossible to evaluate the bearing resistance because the adhering method of the anchor body to hollow wall is not appropriate. In this study, the underreamed ground anchor system was developed so that the bearing pressure of ground anchor can exert as much as possible. And the in-situ tests were performed to evaluate the pullout behavior characteristics and to verify the decreasing effect of the bonded length. The pullout tests were performed with the non-grouted tension condition and grouted tension condition in order to identify the pull-out resistance of each conditions. In addition, it was compared with the results of friction anchor. Finally, the numerical analysis was fulfilled to verify the bearing effect at the bonded part through the detailed modeling by PLAXIS-2D, which is general finite element method analysis program.
