  • In the present study, laboratory pull-out tests with screw anchors are carried out to investigate behavior characteristics of the anchors used in foundation system of underground structures which are applied to uplifting seepage forces. Small scaled pull-out tests in sand under saturated condition and dry condition were carried out. For estimating the group effects of the anchors, the upward displacement and the pullout load varied with spacing of the anchor were observed. The test results were compared with theoretical equation for the ultimate pull-out force. Also, the result of tests can be used to the finite element analysis program, $PENTAGON^{2D}$.

  • An experimental study was performed on the pull-out behavior of 90-deg standard hooks from exterior beam-column connections. The effects of the number of hooked bars of joint area were investigated. Under the pull-out action of hooked bars, the damage and cracking of joint area tends to be more extensive as the number of hooks pulling out from a joint increases. The pull-out strength and post-peak ductility of hooked bar are adversely influenced by the increase in number of hooks pulling out from an exterior joint. Current hooked bar anchorage design guidelines may be improved by considering the effect of the number of hooked bars on anchorage conditions at exterior joints.

  • Presengly reinforced earth is widely utilized for earth structure increasingly not only domestic but also in many foreign countries because of its rapidity of construction and economic merits. The study on the reinforced earth has been actively carried out and enlarged in the theoretical aspect. But it has many problems to the application of the field. In this study large scale Pull-out Test was used to analyze reinforced earthe behavior considering deformation character of reinforced earth under the similar condition to the field.

  • Recently in abroad, structural synthetic fiber developed, has been studied extensively as a substitute for steel fiber due to its properties such as corrosion-resistance, low density, good pumping, and in-place safety, etc. In this study, we conducted pull-out test, for seven different geometries of structural synthetic fibers and obtained optimum geometry for structural synthetic fiber which fully utilizes matrix anchoring without revealing fiber fracturing. According to pull-out test results, it was found that crimped type structural synthetic fiber give significant improvement in the interface toughness(roll-out enemy) and pull-out load.

  • Engineering behaviour of uplift-resisting ground anchors constructed in weathered rocks has been investigated by carrying out a series of full scale pull-out tests. The anchor was to resist uplift forces (buoyancy) associated with high groundwater table acting on the basement of a rail way station. The study has included the ultimate pull-out capacity of the anchors and shear stress transfer mechanism at the anchor-ground interface. The pull-out tests were conducted by changing bonded lengths of the anchor (2~7 m) and diameter of drilled borehole (108~165 mm) to investigate their effects on the behaviour of the anchor. The measured results showed that the ultimate capacity of the anchors was increased with an increase in the bonded length, diameter of drilled borehole as expected. The ultimate capacity of the anchors deduced from the pull-out tests ranged from 392 to 1,569 kN, depending on the above-mentioned factors. This corresponds to the interface shear strength of about 227~505 kPa. Interface shear stresses deduced from the pull-out test showed that the larger the pull-out force, the larger the mobilisation of the interface shear strength. The failure mode of the anchors heavily depended on the bonded lengths of the anchors. When the bonded length was short (2~3 m), a cone-type failure was observed, whereas when the bonded length increased (5~7 m), failure developed at the grout-ground interface.

  • When a nail pulled out in dense, granular soil, the soil in the vicinity of the nail tends to dilate, but its dilatancy results in a normal stress concentration at the soil/nail interface, thereby increasing the pull-out resistance of the inclusion. It is thought to be occurring within the resistance zone where the soil mass is at stationary state and the reinforcement are held in position by the soil, due to the friction or bond. In this paper, A series of direct shear and interface tests were conducted by using so called‘Constant Normal Stiffness Test Apparatus’which was modified and improved from the conventional direct shear box test rig. Unlikely the normal shear box test, this enables to simulate the different constraint effects of surrounding soil during shear under the conditions of constant stress and volume, constant normal stiffness. The aim of the research programme is to get better understanding of pull-out bond mechanism, thus to explore the possibility of evaluating the pull-out bond capacity of soil/reinforcement at the preliminary design stage from the laboratory test.

  • In this study, we introduced the spiral pipe nailing system (refer as SPN system) with self drilling method, can apply to ground which is hard to keep shape of bore hole, and performed limit equilibrium analysis with simplilied trial wedge method while length ratio and bond ratio were altered to evaluate slope stability considered of tensile strength and bending stiffness. A newly soil nailing system named as the SPN system is respected to reduce displacement of nail and increase global slope stability. And effects of various factors related to the design of the SPN system, such as the type of drilling method and the bit, are examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. 6 displacement-controlled field pull-out tests are performed in the present study and the volume of grouting arc also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, short-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed SPN system are analyzed and compared with those of the general soil nailing system by carrying out the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests.

  • Steel bolts are used in the construction industry for a large variety of applications that range from fixing permanent installations to temporary fixtures. In the past much research has been focused on developing destructive testing techniques to estimate their pull-out load carrying capacity with very little attention to develop non-destructive techniques. In this regards the presented research work details the combined use of ultrasonic pulse velocity and Schmidt hammer tests to identify anchor bolts with faculty installation and to estimate their pull-out strength by relating it to the Schmidt hammer rebound value. From experimentation, it was observed that the load capacity of bolt depends on its embedment length, diameter, bond quality/concrete strength and alignment. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test is used to judge the quality of bond of embedded anchor bolt by relating the increase in ultrasonic pulse transit time to the presence of internal pours and cracks in the vicinity of steel bolt and the surrounding concrete. This information combined with the Schmidt hammer rebound number, R, can be used to accurately identify defective bolts which resulted in lower pull-out strength. 12 mm diameter bolts with embedment length of 70 mm and 50 mm were investigated using constant strength concrete. Pull-out load capacity versus the Schmidt hammer rebound number for each embedment length is presented.

  • The reliability of machined fiber reinforced composites (FRC) in high strength applications and the safety in using these components are often critically dependent upon the quality of surface produced by machining since the surface layer may drastically affect the strength and chemical resistance of the material [1,2,3,4]. Current study will discuss the characterization of fiber pull-out in orthogonal cutting of a fiber-matrix composite materials. A sparsely distributed idealized model composite material, namely a glass reinforced polyester (GFRP) was used as workpiece. Analysis method employs a force sensor and the signals from the sensor are processed using AR time series model. The experimental correlation between the fiber pull-out and the AR coefficients is examined first and effects of fiber orientation, cutting parameters and tool geometry on the fiber pull-out are also discussed.

  • Excavation nearby the existing structures is being performed vigorously to get the greatest use of land along with fast economic growth in the downtown area. The application of soil nailing system gradually increases because of an advantage of soil nailing system adjacently constructed in the existing structures. In this study, friction resistance by pull-out is considered as main resistance except resistance formed by flexural rigidity of nail observing that resistance of flexural rigidity is about $0{\sim}15\;%$ of whole safety factor according to degree of flexural rigidity in general soil nail wall and application of geosynthetic fiber soil nailing system is evaluated through laboratory tensile strength test and field pull-out test.
