FLIC(Fluid in cell) method has been used for analyzing a cold gas flow field in an interrupter of a circuit treater since 1970s. In this paper FLIC method is applied to calculation of a cold gas flow and then combined with the simple are analysis method in order to investigate the flow field characteristics in a puffer type interrupter rated at 145kV 40kA. The results for a cold gas flow agree with the experimental measurement well. The other results such as pressure rise, arc temperature, post-arc current and so forth am also reasonable and show the possibility that the combined program can be applied to the design of UHV interrupters.

An arc model based on the N-S equations modified by adding an energy source term to take account of the arc is developed and solved using Taylor-Galerkin FEM. The numerical method is applied to the simulation of the interruption process of a puffer type GCB. Moving boundary conditions of the arc chamber during operation is taken into account. The thermal interruption capability of an actual puffer type GCB will be predicted and compared with that of the measured result.
The interrupting capability of gas circuit breakers(GCB) are critically dependent on the pressure rise of the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber at current zero. Therefore it's very useful for the designers to know the pressure rise there at the design stage. Much effort has been done to predict the pressure rise in the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber in no-load condition. Thus, we now calculate it with reasonable accuracy with the simple programs coded by ourselves or with the commercial CFD packages. However, it has been still difficult problem to calculate it under the existence of arc. In this paper, we propose a method which can be used to predict the pressure rise in the thermal expansion chamber of thermal expansion type GCB. The method has been applied to the 25.8kV 25kA thermal expansion type model GCB and the calculated results have been compared with those from experiment.
In this paper, various forces generated in the Gas Circuit Breaker(GCB) such as operating force, repulsive force, spring force, and dashpot force are analyzed with the fluid properties and the mechanical structure. The operation of GCB can be understood. A stroke curve from the result of simulation is compared with experimental one.
This paper presents a method of cold gas flow-field analysis within puffer type GCB(Gas Circuit Breaker). Using this method, the entire interruption process including opening operation of GCB can be simulated successfully. In particular, the distortion problem of the grid due to the movement of moving parts can be dealt with by the fixed grid technique. The gas parameters such as temperature, pressure, density, velocity through the entire interruption process can be calculated and visualized. It was confirmed that the time variation of pressure which was calculated from the application of the method to a model GCB agreed with the experimental one. Therefore it is possible to evaluate the small current interruption capability analytically and to design the interrupter which has excellent interruption capability using the proposed method. It is expected that the proposed method can reduce the time and cost for development of GCB very much. It also will be possible to develop the hot-gas flow-field analysis program by combining the cold-gas flow field program with the arc model and to evaluate the large current interruption capability.
Recently, Gas Circuit Breakers are rapidly replacing Vacuum Circuit Breakers in the medium voltage switchgear. This is due to the improved performance of - GCB in interrupting capability, price, weight, size etc., while the countermeasure to suppress the switching surges of VCB has not been satisfactory. Intensive research works on the GCB have been conducted in the world widely since 1980. Nowadays it is well known that the thermal expansion type GCB can provide- better performance than puffer type in the distribution power system. KERI has conducted researches in the GCB rated at 25.8kV 25kA with Jinkwang Co. using the thermal expantion principle since 1993. In this paper, the calculated results of electric and magnetic fields for the model GCB are presented and analyzed. The effect of permanent magnet used to improve the interruption capabilty at the low current level is also investigated. The design parameters for the interrupter inspected through the short-circuit tests conducted at high power laboratory of KERI.
In this study, we build system and techniques of evaluating the interruption performance of the GCB with experimental method. We constructed a simplified synthetic test circuit of which ability is up to 245kV, 50kA BTF test. And We composed a model test circuit breaker with puffer assisted self blasting type GCB. With this circuit breaker, we carried out the experiment of no load and SLF90. During the tests, we measured the several factors such as stroke, pressure, arc temperature, the voltage and current near the current zero and dI/dt, dV/dt. Arc conductivity before 200ns before current zero which is one of the indexes of the thermal recovery of a GCB was measured. With these kinds of measurement, we could estimate the performance of a GCB fundamentally. Futhermore these results were used to adjust the arc modeling with CFD(computational fluid dynamics) and we could increase the plausibility of the analytical method.
The SLF(Short Line Fault) breaking capability test for high voltage class $SF_6$ GCB(Gas Circuit Breaker) was conducted. Simplified LC resonant circuit test facility was used for SLF breaking test. During test, Test current was measured by Rogwski coil and arc voltage was measured by voltage divider. Arc conductance was calculated by using these test results before 200ns at current zero. Critical arc conductance value at rated voltage 145kV class is about 2.3mS regardless of breaking current magnitude and arc conductance value at rated voltage 170kV class is about 2.6mS.
An arc model based on the N-S equations modified by adding an energy source term to take account of the arc is developed and solved using Taylor-Garlerkin FEM in the present paper. The numerical method is applied to the simulation of the opening procedure of a puffer type GCB. Moving boundary conditions of the arc chamber during operation is taken into account. Numerical predictions of the temperature profiles at different strokes are presented.
A mathematical model (hybrid arc model) for arc behaviour in an $SF_6$ puffer gas-blast circuit-breaker has been developed. It has adopted the advantages of integral method and differential method. The method has been applied to model puffer circuit breaker of Noeske et al and good agreement of critical RRRV(Ratio of Rise of Recovery Voltage) has been obtained. Axial or radial distributions of temperature, electric field and arc radius are also presented and analyzed.
