  • Old-age public libraries constructed in the 1970s and 1980s are exposed to safety problems and user complaints due to facility aging. For this reasons, demands and in-depth discussions for the remodeling of old public libraries are on the rise. The Korean Committee on Library and Information Policy has set this issue as a major initiative, and local governments are also interested in establishing an action plan. The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility for remodeling of 8 obsolete public libraries in Busan metropolitan city. In details, this study analyzes the libraries that need to be remodeled with the reasonable grounds, and suggests in what order and manner the remodeling should proceed. The data were collected from literature review, on site field survey, and questionnaire survey targeting librarians and library users. The final conclusions were verified through working-level meetings and experts' advise.

  • The research aims to analyze the architectural trends of the public library buildings that have recently won the AIA/ALA Library Building Awards, ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards or have introduced as excellent examples among the cases of new construction or remodeling of public libraries in North America. The research seeks to find the implications and guidelines for new constructions or remodeling of Korean public libraries by analyzing the main features of recently awarded library constructions, and to suggest the directions of public library constructions (or remodeling) to be opened in the future. The research found the six significant emergent themes by the content analysis and explained what each theme means with the examples of the libraries. On the basis of the findings, the research suggests the directions of public library designs and constructions in the future, and further follow-up research topics.

  • The development of modern science and technology has a tremendous impact on culture and communication. Therefore a library that typically serves to collect, arrange and provide information is required to perform more diversified roles to stay abreast with changing modern society. Recent surge in demand for public library construction or remodeling is expected, but we still are in an actual condition that there is no model about the library spatial operation which considers the type and a service size of library. the purpose of this study is to examine the conditions for the rational and systematic spatial management of public library in today`s changing information society, to make a case study on the state of spatial management, and to suggest the efficient rearrangement of spatial component as a solution. In this study, for rapid assembly and remodeling business plan of the library can be referred to, we should do following things for the development of a standard model which has a rational space operations that correspond to the library features and services size. Firstly, analyze the space configuration of our nation's public libraries. Secondly, collect and analyze the libraries' spatial configuration in our nation and at abroad. Thirdly, define the next stretch of public library buildings by their types and develop a reasonable model as to the spatial configuration and present it.

  • The remodeling of apartment that improves the improves the life level is going to be in the market because of lots of old apartment buildings. Until now, the research of remodeling is mainly restricted to the laws and financial funding, however, the needs in the trend of remodeling. This research, first, through the examples of remodeling in the country, this study draws remodeling factors that can be applied. Secondly, this study targets the study of remodeling to apartments and analyzes the type of housings made by the Korea National Housing Corporation. Thirdly the study analyzes the features that appear in housing units and draws out factors of remodeling This research's result Is arranged as follows. \circled1Need Remodeling thorough study of space expanded, grant between artificer and active performance improvement direction such as building equipment expansion along with Remodeling concept of unit repair. \circled2When apartments are newly built, systematic construction is necessary that considers future efficiency improvement from the design stage. \circled3This study, which applied the characteristic factors appearing after the 1990s to remodeling factors, show that they can be applied when remodeling the worn out wall-slab type apartments.

  • This study analytically examined library anxiety that various users felt when they use public libraries, by measuring it on K-LAS. The findings show that the library anxiety is varied depending on users' age, gender, academic careers, usage purposes, frequency of use and size of libraries. It suggested the guidance and education about the use of libraries, environmental improvement based on the remodeling of libraries, wearing of nameplates written in big characters for identifying librarians and the education for users' understanding and the provision of device and equipment manuals according the levels of users' experiences, as measures for overcoming the library anxiety, enhancing usage satisfaction and activating usage.

  • New library building construction and the remodeling of old one is growing tendency is nation-wide recently. But there is no reflection of library user's view in the field of library construction. For the completion of the research the data was collected by bar-code scanner with user ID cards. Collected data was analysed by using crosstabulation and t-test. Around 2:00PM is peak time for library visit and the reading room for children is most frequent use space in library.

  • The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has been promoting strengthening energy efficiency of old buildings through public green building remodeling projects since 2020. Green remodeling includes both essential and optional construction of passive and active elements. However, there is a lack of integrated designs of passive and active systems and no standards for prioritizing these systems according to the building's age. Therefore, this study examined six public libraries in central region 2 that were expected to be high energy consuming. Remodeling strategy priorities were selected based on potential energy reduction. The libraries were divided into three groups based on their year of construction, completed in the 1980s (Model 1), 1990s (Model 2), and 2000s (Model 3). ECO2-OD, based on ISO 13790 and DINV 18599, was used as the primary energy consumption analysis tool. Simulation results indicated Model 1 and Model 2 benefited most from higher insulation and replacement of mechanical equipment. Model 3 benefited most from upgrading to more energy efficient windows.

  • This research aims to establish the size standard of university library's user space, and present the standard and method to calculate total area required in the planning of new building construction and remodeling. Nine university libraries newly constructed or remodeled since 2000 were selected among the libraries of large scale universities with more than 10,000 enrolled students as the target libraries in this research. The target libraries were classified into A group (five cases partially remodeled) and B group (four cases newly constructed or fully remodeled) on the basis of the change of times. A university library can be divided into three spaces (user space, administration space and public space). This research classified the reading room in the user space into bookshelf zone, reading zone, information/office zone and hall/other zone, and analyzed area ratio according to each zone. B group's bookshelf zone decreased 12% more than A group, and B group's reading zone increased 10% more than A group. However, there was no big change in the area ratio of information/office zone and hall/other zone. This can be interpreted that university library changes from book and archive preservation-oriented space to user-oriented space. This research presented a proper reading room area calculation method, based on the capacity of books, by reflecting such a change. Each zone's standard was set up through classification of domestic and international standards, based on which, the calculation method of university library's total floor area required was presented. The reason why there was difference in university library's total floor area required according to domestic standard and international standard was that the number of enrolled students per seat in the reading room was different. The area calculation methods presented in this research can be utilized as useful data upon planning university library construction or remodeling.

  • As one of the challenges providing sufficient Social Overhead Capital (SOC), such as cultural and sports facilities, installing small libraries and remodeling old public libraries are crucial to provide local community a public space and specialized services. In order to achieve such objectives, those libraries need to designate special themes while operating and providing services. In this study, we sought to find the relationship between the specialized themes and the spatial composition of the library. For this purpose, we investigated the specialized themes, spaces, services, spatial composition of program, and external environment. Analysis results showed that those libraries need to coordinate various areas according to the respective themes as well as categorization for its specialization subjects in order to stimulate activities of the libraries and to increase the usage rates. In addition, we have identified that a variety of spaces, such as thematic experience zones, are needed to improve the libraries' performance.
