  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and present a method for measuring public accessibility to urban open spaces. A basic assumption is that, for urban open space policies, accessibility is more important than per capita area. In this study, for the purpose of simplicity, a residential area is assumed to have access to open space if it is within a certain distance from an urban open space. Official city planning map is overlayed with a 200m grid and each cell of dwelling area is checked whether it is within a certain distance from a cell categorized as urban open space. A computer program for widely commercialized personal computer is developed for data processing so that local governments without access to more sophisticated systems can carry out similar studies for their own jurisdictions. Five cities, big, small, old and new, are selected to test the proposed method. Dwelling areas of Ansan new Town have highest accessibility to open spaces(93.4% of dwelling cells have open space cell within 500m). Seoul (91.2%), Suwon(78.2%), Pusan(73.8%), and Inchon(61.4%) have less accessibility. If we assume the Ansan City residents are evenly distributed over the dwelling area, 93.4% of the population has open spaces within walking distance of 500m. However, if we consider physical barriers such as arterial roads, railroads, and streams that reduce the accessibility, less than 93.4% of Ansan city residents enjoy good access to open spaces. Though a further detailed analysis is needed to picture the microscopic accessibility, this method can serve as a useful tool for urban open space policy and open space alternatives evaluations.

  • This study aims to introduce a model for enhancing community well-being through the utilization of public open data. To objectively assess abstract notions of residential satisfaction, text data from complaints is analyzed. By leveraging accessible public data, costs related to data collection are minimized. Initially, relevant text data containing civic complaints is collected and refined by removing extraneous information. This processed data is then combined with meaningful datasets and subjected to topic modeling, a text mining technique. The insights derived are visualized using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Application Programming Interface (API) data. The efficacy of this analytical model was demonstrated in the Godeok/Gangil area. The proposed methodology allows for comprehensive analysis across time, space, and categories. This flexible approach involves incorporating specific public open data as needed, all within the overarching framework.

  • This study examined Public Evaluation for functions of urban open space environment using a marketing strategy called Importance-Performance analysis. 12 main function attributes for urban open space environment were selected 150 respondents were sampled in Taejon city by personal interview. Ratings used mean values from a seven-point scale. Results were then graphically displayed on an easily interpreted two-dimensional 'Action Grid'. Generally Importance Ratings were high, but Performance Ratings were low relatively for various open space environment functions. In air pollution control function the difference was the most large. The results of rating scale analysis indicated repondents' sexual and residence period difference.

After then it analyzed the importance in both civil servants and practical officials side. For this public space planning topics and indicators by FGI (Focus Group Interview) derived through and through expert questionnaires Analytic hierarchy (AHP: Analytic Hierachy Process) were analyzed by conducting importance. A result, the priority of public space as a park planning index was found in the case of privately owned public space, public pedestrian pathways, public open space, public facilities land, the park is located, and the most important characteristics of the road, if the public transport association the most important thing is derived. In order to enhance the public good public space and location for easy access to the consideration of whether the plan should be. Therefore this work will be the fundamental materials to make some of farther policies related with the development of public interest of private-public spaces.

  • As library have become changed. Beyond conventional simple functions such as data storing and recording, the functions of modern public libraries are expended to various directions, for example functions of encouraging residents to utilize information and participate in cultural activities and also a function of life-long education, resulting in playing a role as complex space. As the role of public libraries changes into a complex one, spatial planning reflecting this change is required. Spatial arrangements, furniture arrangements and interior images in 12 public libraries in Seoul were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that in spatial arrangements, many public libraries linked spaces by functions. Furniture arrangements have been changing from the closed arrangement to the open arrangement. Interior images were identified as static and simple except digital information space. Accordingly, public libraries have became needed to play a proper role of community facilities for local residents by planning furniture arrangements and conducting interior designs taking characteristics of many different users into consideration.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the planning guideline of individual space size for public library. The 26 cases were selected from the data of outstanding libraries built after the year 2000. The paper focused on the comparison between the data from analysis and the guideline from manual book of public library. The result of this study was as followed ; The first, reference reading rooms were open-plan rather than segmented. The third, children's space retained sufficient numbers of book collections. It represented that people realized the importance of children's library in terms of cultural education. The fourth, the percentage of space size of cultural area showed high amount of numbers. It proved the fact that the public library as community center was required various cultural programs. The fifth, the percentages of preservation library were lower than the guideline in case of the big libraries, while the small libraries were higher. The book collections of detached annex libraries should be linked with the central libraries.

  • The rebuilding method for old apartment housing blocks has merits of providing new buildings and larger private living spaces. However, it causes many serious urban problems, such as shortage of infrastructure capacity, traffic congestion, reduction of building life, and deterioration of open space quality. Nowadays, remodeling is accepted as a way of overcoming such negative effects of the rebuilding method. This study focuses on the various techniques of remodeling. The results of this research are as follows; First, old apartment blocks provide poor level of service in general, so they have problems of bad accessibility, deterioration of facilities, and degraded landscape. In many cases, there is a hindrance from walking freely and security problem due to illegal privatization of public spaces. Second, various remodeling techniques are required to meet residents' different needs. The residents of apartment housing value private space above public space, and show low level of willingness to pay cost for remodeling. Third, based on these findings, some remodeling techniques are suggested - integration of a space to another, expansion of spaces, connection of spaces, reuses of roofs and walls, relocation and renovation of paths between buildings, and so on.
