본 연구의 목적은 공공도서관 건축, 특히 공간구성에 대한 지역주민들의 다양한 의견을 조사하여 공공도서관을 신축하거나 리모델링할 때 활용할 수 있는 요인을 파악하는데 있다. 연구방법으로는 설문지법을 사용하였으며, 도서관 신축을 진행하고 있는 경기도 용인 지역의 주민을 대상으로 실시되었다. 조사결과 기능별 공간 비율과 공간배치에 관련된 요인들로 도서관 이용목적, 도서관 내 활동, 연령, 동반자 형태 등이 있었다. 도서관내 주요 활동은 독서가 가장 많은 부분을 차지하고 있었으며, 많은 주민들이 가족과 함께 도서관을 이용하는 성향을 보여주고 있어서 가족을 위한 공간이 필요하였다. 또한 연령별로 도서관내 활동의 차이가 있어 연령별로 적합한 공간의 확보가 요구되었다.

As database become more variable and multimedia, the integration between conventional library based on printed matter and digital library on IT makes it accelerated that the changes in today's information circumstances. Due to more leisure time modern people who get intellectual and interested in variety so they need continuing education, intellectual satisfaction and cultural life. Consequently today's public library expands to become a source of every kind of information, an educational facility and community facility to fulfill the cultural needs. On the assumption above, this study aims at offering database for planning public library that meets the needs for multifunctional library through analyzing space, structure, and character of modern public libraries and chooses 8 cases in Japan provide both primary and additional functions. Quantitative data from blueprints, websites and publications has been collected to analyze the space arrangement corresponding with the functional characteristics.

본 연구의 목적은 공공도서관이 공간운영을 계획할 때 참조할 수 있는 기준과 권장사항들이 무엇인지 그리고 도서관이 새로운 공간계획을 할 때 고려해야 할 사항들이 무엇인지를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 IFLA의 도서관 공간산출법, 호주의 NSW 도서관의회에서 제공하는 공공도서관 공간운영기준 그리고 프랑스의 대학도서관을 위한 공간운영 권장사항을 조사 분석하였다. 비교분석을 통해 국내 공공도서관을 위한 공간운영권 장기준(안)을 제시하였다. 권장기준(안)은 공공도서관의 영역을 장서공간, 이용자공간, 사무공간, 문화공간, 지원공간 그리고 선택적 공간으로 구분하였으며, 구분된 각 개별 공간이 전체 도서관건물에서 차지하는 비율을 장서공간을 기준으로 영역별로 제시하였다. 그러나 기준을 적용함에 있어 개별 도서관의 건물사정과 제공하는 서비스가 도서관마다 상이하기 때문에 지역사회의 분위기와 요구를 반영하는 것이 매우 중요하다.

This study examined the various functions of public libraries, as well as user satisfaction and needs. We targeted 6 public libraries in the Seoul and Gyunggi area. After 280 library users were surveyed, the collected data were analyzed with an SPSS for Win 14.0 statistics program, where we used frequency, percentage, mean, T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. The major findings were as follows: 1) Half of the users used educational functional space, mainly in the 10-20 age group, who used it for educational purposes as a student or to prepare for getting a job. 2) There were gaps between the furniture arrangement and user preference since most libraries used a rigid system while users preferred a more flexible arrangement. 3) Space by space, public library satisfaction levels differed according to the users' gender and age. Satisfaction of the digital information room scored high, especially for users in their forties. Since public library users are diverse and require various functions, library interiors should be planned accordingly in terms of furniture arrangement and interior design. In particular, there was a gap between satisfaction by age groups, so libraries must account for community needs by considering the age group demographics of their surrounding areas.

본 연구는 공공도서관 공간에 대한 청소년의 인식, 이용 및 요구 사항을 알아보고 향후 공공도서관의 효율적인 청소년자료실 공간구성 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 청소년자료실이 별도로 설치된 공공도서관 두 곳을 선정하여 중 고등학생 이용자 126명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사 결과 전체 응답자의 86.5%가 청소년자료실을 이용하며, 주요 이용목적은 여가독서, 개인학습, 정보이용인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 설문 응답자의 64.8%는 청소년자료실 별도 설치를 중요 이유로 대답하였다. 청소년자료실에서 가장 개선해야 할 점으로 열람석 확대, 정보활용기기 이용 공간 부족, 휴게 공간 부족, 그룹학습 및 모임 공간 확대 등이 나타났다. 이를 통해 청소년 요구를 반영한 공간구성 정책 마련, 물리적 시설 및 청소년서비스가 균형을 이룬 도서관 환경 조성, 열람석 확충을 위한 자료실 개방시간 연장, 다른 공간의 유연성 있는 열람 공간 활용 등의 공공도서관의 공간 활용 방안을 제안하였다.

2000년 공공도서관에 대한 정보화 사업의 일환으로 디지털자료 전용공간이 대다수의 도서관에 마련되었지만 획일적인 디자인으로 인해 이용자의 다양한 행위를 수용하기에는 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 공공도서관 디지털공간의 공간계획요소에 대한 문헌 및 설문조사를 통하여 디지털 세대 이용자의 새로운 요구에 대응하기 위하여 공공도서관 이용자가 정보활동 시 중요하다고 생각하는 공간계획요소에 대한 중요도평가를 실시하였다. 중요도 평가를 위하여 1차적으로 각 기관의 도서관 기준 및 평가지표, 선행연구를 분석하여 50개의 요소가 도출되었고 이를 이용자 150명에게 설문조사 하였다. 중요도의 평균값 이상 도출된 요소를 중심으로 요인분석을 실시하였으며 비슷한 성격의 요소들 간의 상관성을 파악하여 요인별 공간계획요소를 분류하고자 하였다. 연구결과 계획적요인, 디자인적요인, 심리적요인, 기술적요인 총 4개의 요인으로 분류되었다. 이와 같은 요인별 디지털공간계획요소들을 평가도구로 하여 차후 공공도서관 공간평가와 이용자 만족도 조사를 실시함으로서 구체적인 공간계획방안 마련에 기초자료가 될 수 있을 것이다.

This study examined the programs of public library and the spaces for them in Seoul and Gyunggi area. The examination was performed by making field surveys on 12 sample public libraries and posing user questionnaires on 4 libraries out of the sample. The data from the questionnaire survey were processed and analyzed with SPSS 14.0. The results are as follows: First, according to the arrangement of the furniture, the space usages for the programs in public libraries are divided into four classes, one-way exposure: free of furniture: two-way exposure. The one-way exposure has been the most common though the furniture arrangement varies with the characteristics of a program. Second, language or information technology related programs are the most frequently attended programs in public libraries. Lastly, the space usage for the reading education programs has had the highest level of the user satisfaction measurement while the user satisfaction is lower in those for general culture programs and health care programs.

This research is to analyze the public cases of information facilities in terms of central circulations in multi level volumes such as atrium or court which provide visual intervention between different spaces and physical connections such as bridges. Hunt Library design balances the understood pre-existing needs with the University's emerging needs to create a forward-thinking learning environment. While clearly a contemporary structure within a traditional context of the NCSU campus, the Hunt Library provides a positive platform for influencing its surroundings. Both technical and programmatic innovations are celebrated as part of the learning experience and provide a versatile and stimulating environment for students. Public library as open spaces connecting to an interactive social domain over communities can provide variety of learning environments, or technology based labs. There are many cases of the public information spaces with dynamic networks where participants can play their roles in physical space as well as in the intellectual stimulation. In the research, new public projects provide typologies of information spaces with user oriented media. The research is to address a creative transition between the reading space and the experimental links of the integration of state-of-the-art technology is highly visible in the building's design. The user-friendly browsing system that replaces the traditional browsing with the virtual shelves classified and archived by their form, is to reduce the storage space of the public library and it is to allow more space for collaborative learning. In addition to the intelligent robot of information storages, innovative features is the large-scale visualization space that supports team experiments to carry out collaborative online works and therefore the public library's various programs is to provide visitors with more efficient participatory environment.

In 2010 there are 759 public libraries in Korea, and they have been increased constantly for the recent four to five years. In order to make them as cultural spaces in local communities, Korean government is now planning to increase the number of public libraries up to 900 and to build small to medium-sized multiple purpose libraries rather than large and single purpose ones. Especially in the case of public libraries in metropolitan cities, which are main libraries in those areas, they should be designed to play major functions of cultural experience, exhibition, and life-long education as well as to meet the basic needs of providing books for public reading and of building and developing branch libraries based on local characteristics. Above all, in order to make a public library as a center of local culture, a space planning focused on increasing utilization and satisfaction of the residents is required. It is essential to conduct a survey to understand the needs of the residential users and reflect their opinions. In this regard, our research process was constructed as follows. First, precedent studies on a certain densely populated area were reviewed. Second, a survey was conducted in Ulsan city to figure out the needs and the satisfaction level of the actual users. The purpose of this study is to propose a better space planning approach for public libraries in metropolitan cities based on the analysis.

1980년대에 79개관에 불과했던 전국 공공도서관이 2013년 말 기준으로 885개관에 이르고 있다. 특히 2000년대 이후에 건립된 도서관이 전체 도서관의 60%를 넘어서고 있을 정도로 도서관의 시대가 도래 하면서 상당한 양적팽창이 이루어지고 있다. 그에 따른 질적 측면도 중요하게 부각되면서 공공도서관의 효율적 공간구성에 대한 이용자 요구가 증대되고 있다. 특히 이용자의 요구에 부응하기 위한 디지털열람실과 문화교육실의 증가는 2000년 전 후의 변화에 따른 시사점으로 나타나고 있으며, 기존 공간구성 비율에서 벗어나 시대에 적합한 도서관 공간계획이 필요한 시점이다. 이 연구는 1980~1990년대 준공된 공공도서관과 2000년 이후 설립된 공공도서관을 중심으로 시대별 공공도서관의 공간구성 형태를 상호 비교분석하였다. 장서보존과 열람 기능이 강조되었던 1980~1990년대와 이용자의 측면을 고려하여 문화영역 기능이 확대된 2000년대 이후 공공도서관의 소요시설별 면적비율의 차이를 살펴봄으로써 현시점의 도서관 공간의 중요 고려요소를 도출할 수 있었다. 이는 시대요구와 부합할 수 있는 면적기준을 제시하기 위한 최종연구에 대해 기초자료를 제공한다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.
