  • A computational investigation has been carried out to study the heat transfer characteristics of jet vane assembly used for the thrust vector control(TVC) of a vertical launch motor. In this study, the coefficients of convective heat transfer on the jet vane are calculated using the solutions of thermal boundary-layer equation and several semi-empirical equations. The calculation of 3-dimensional temperature distribution for the jet vane assembly was performed using the softwares called PATRAN and ABAQUS. The accuracy of the present numerical method is verified by comparing with the measured and calculated temperatures within jet vane shaft. The temporal variation of jet vane temperatures for three deflection angles(0o, 12.5o, 25o) was discussed.

  • In this paper, the hybrid algorithm of Support Vector Machine md Artificial Neural Network is used for the defect diagnostics algorithm for the aircraft turbo-shaft engine. The results of learning of ANN, especially, accuracy or speed of convergence are sensitive to the number of data, so a comparison between design point and off-design area, especially, Mach number and fuel flow variable area, is essential research. From application results for diagnostics of gas turbine engine, it was confirmed that the hybrid algorithm could detect well in the of-design area as well as design point.

  • The study was performed to understand combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. Liquid fuel is discharged radially outwards through injection holes drilled in the high speed rotating shaft. We observed atomizing characteristics with variation of fuel nozzle rotating speed by using PDPA system. The mean drop diameter highly depends on fuel nozzle rotating speed. In KARI combustion test facility, Ignition and combustion tests were performed by using real scale combustor. In the test results, ignition and combustion efficiency were increased according to increasing fuel nozzle rotating speed. The measured radial temperature distribution at the combustor exit shows stable and fairly good distribution.

  • In order to Improve the performance of a free power turbine type gas turbine engine by injecting the atomized water into a compressor inlet., a study on Moisture Air Turbine (MAT) cycle was proposed. Compressor work by air-water mixtures in phase change was theoretically considered, and it was found that the water evaporation might reduce the compressor work. Cycle model calculations predicted that power increments of 21.7%, 20.2% and 18.4% by 1.5% water to the air flow rate at the compressor intake with rotational shaft speeds of 1000, 1210, 1350 rps were obtained, and also thermal efficiency due to the reduction of compressor work was improved.

  • The calculation of torsional vibration for marine diesel engine propulsion shafting is normally carried out by equalizing exciting energy to damping energy, or using the dynamic magnifier. But, with these methods, the vibration amplitudes are calculated only for resonance points and vibration amplitudes of other running speeds of engine are determined by the estimation. Recently, many energy-saving ships have been built and on these ships, two-stroke, supercharged, super-long stroke diesel engines which have a small number of cylinders are usually installed. In these cases, the first order critical-torsional vibrations of these engine shaftings appear ordinarily near the MCR speed and the stress amplitudes of their vibration skirts exceed the limit stress defined by the rules of classification society. To predict the above condition in the design stage, the synthesized vibration amplitudes of all orders which are summed up according to their phase angles must be calculated from the drawings of propulsion shaft systems. In this study, a theoretical method to fulfill the above calculation is derived and a computer program is developed according to the derived method. And a shafting system of two-stroke, super-long stroke diesel engine which was installed in a bulk carrier is analyzed with this method. The measured values of this engine shafting are compared with those of calculated results and they show a fairly good agreement.

  • A surface piercing propeller (SPP) in tunnel has been proposed recently as a new propulsion system for a high speed air cavity ship. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the SPP in tunnel through a series of model tests. A model propulsion system is placed on a dummy body made of Acrylics. The tunnel is divided into two regions by a guide vane extending from the inlet to the center of the propeller shaft. Air has been supplied from an air nozzle placed at the bottom of the dummy body and the changes in propeller performances caused by the air flow are investigated. The measurements are done for open water and in-tunnel conditions, both for fully and partially submerged propeller. The influence of the guide vane configurations on the propeller performance is also studied. The experiments are performed at the variable pressure circulation water channel of Inha University.

  • In this Paper, Support Vector Machine(SVM) and Artificial Neural Network(ANN) are used for developing the defect diagnostic algorithm of the aircraft turbo-shaft engine. The system that uses the ANN falls in a local minima when it learns many nonlinear data, and its classification accuracy ratio becomes low. To make up for this risk, the Separate Learning Algorithm(SLA) of ANN has been proposed by using SVM. This is the method that ANN learns selectively after discriminating the defect position by SVM, then more improved performance estimation can be obtained than using ANN only. The proposed SLA can make the higher classification accuracy by decreasing the nonlinearity of the massive data during the training procedure.

  • The present paper describes a conceptual design of a turbopump which employs a planetary gear system. In a launcher system, weight is one of the most important design factor. In turbopump systems using propellants such as kerosene, or methane, single shaft systems are employed because of simplicity. One of the main disadvantages of this system, however, is the same rotational speed of both pumps and a turbine which forces to operate under non-optimum condition. To operate each component in optimum or favorable rotational speeds, a planetary gear system may be the best choice when the compactness and efficiency of a turbopump system is considered. A conceptual design and feasibility of the turbopump system adopting a planetary gear system is suggested.

  • The power control system of Smart UAV is similar to the propeller pitch governing concept of turboprop aircraft. The pilot adjusts the engine power directly and the pitch governor controls the propeller pitch to maintain the propeller rotational speed. The electronic engine controller(EEC) of PW206C engine developed for helicopter is not fit for the power control concept of Smart UAV, and therefore the manual back-up system of PW206C engine is used for the engine power control of Smart UAV. Engine performance estimation program is used to predict the control range of power lever angle(PLA) according to the variation of engine output shaft speed, flight altitude and flight speed. These data provide a guide for the PLA control in manual mode operation.

  • This paper shows the numerical and experimental results about the hydrodynamic characteristics of X-Twisted rudders having continuous twist of the leading edge along the span. All the results were compared with those of the semi-balanced rudder. Calculation through the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation (RANSE) code with propeller sliding meshes shows large inflow angle and fast inflow velocity in the vicinity of ${\pm}0.7$ R from the shaft center, so it may cause cavitation. Also, X-Twisted rudder has relatively small inflow angles along the rudder span compared with semi-balanced rudder. For the performance validation, rudders for two large container carriers were designed and tested. Cavitation tests at the medium sized cavitation tunnel with respect to the rudder types and twisted angles showed the effectiveness of twist on cavitation and the tendency according to the twist. And the resistance, self-propulsion and manoeuvring tests were also carried out at the towing tank. As a result, in the case of X-Twisted rudder, ship speed was improved with good manoeuvring performance. Especially, it was found out that manoeuvring performance between port and starboard was well balanced compared with semi-balanced rudders.
