Study of Teachers' Language of Instruction Based on a Video of the Algebra Classroom - such as Two Cases of "The Multiplication and Division of the Fractions"

  • By using the recording and quantitative analysis of two videos about "The multiplication and division of the Fractions" and the "Flanders Interaction Analysis System," we classified the teachers' language of instruction in algebra classroom and also analysis the language of instruction in the different teaching process. The results after the analysis as follows: (1) The proportion of time was taken in teachers' language of instruction is high and vary in types, most of the teachers' language is teachers' question; (2) In the different teaching process, the proportion of time was taken in teachers' language of instruction is different; (3) Teachers attached importance to explain the example and had the similar teaching strategy, but the teachers' language is different; (4) In the practice process, teachers placed importance on exploring the tough question and its teaching strategies are different. The teachers' questions are the main teachers' language of instruction.

A PROPORTIONAL ANALYSIS OF SOFT TISSUE PROFILE IN KOREAN YOUNG ADULTS (성인 정상 교합자의 연조직 비율에 관한 두부 X-선 계즉학적 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate proportional characteristics of soft tissue profile in Korean young adults. The sample consisted of 50 young adults(25 males and 25 females) who had pleasing profile and normal occlusion. Soft tissue proportional analysis was performed on lateral cephalograms taken in natural head position. The results were as follows : 1. Mean and standard deviation of proportional analysis were obtained. 2. Horizontal and vertical dimensions were larger in male. But facial proportion had no sexual difference except upper/lower face height (p<0.05). Upper/lower face height was larger in female than in male. 3. Vertical dimensions, except SN-ST, had high correlation with horizontal dimensions. 4. Head positioning error of natural head position was smaller than inter -individual variability of SN line.

Comparison of the Curricula and the Textbooks Concerning the Proportion and Ratio Area between Korea and Singapore (비와 비율 영역에 대한 우리나라와 싱가포르 교육과정 및 교과서 비교 -TIMSS 평가목표와 공개문항을 중심으로)

  • In the TIMSS assessment goal and open TIMSS 2007, Singapore recorded a lower overall achievement level compared with Korea; however, the excellent results shown by Singapore furnished an opportunity for various countries to research into the education in Singapore. This paper conducted a comparative analysis of the "Proportion, Proportional Expression, and Percentile" area out of the three topics involving "Fractions and Decimals", "Proportion, Proportional expression, and Percentile", and "Measurement", in all of which Singapore exhibited a higher percentage of correct answers than Korea. The paper was able to discover the following differences through a comparative analysis of how Korean and Singaporean textbooks deal with the open questions of TIMSS 2007 after looking into them according to four assessment goals. First, the Singaporean textbook introduced the concept of proportion one year ahead of the Korean textbook. Second, the Singaporean textbook repeatedly coped with the topic of "Proportion, Proportional Expression, and Percentile" in depth and by academic year, and its volume was larger than that of the Korean textbook. Third, there was a difference in the introduction and definition of the concept of proportion. Fourth, the way of introducing a proportional expression was also different, and the Singaporean textbook proposed many more questions that utilize this expression in ordinary life. Based on these differences, the paper suggested implications that could be applied to the Korean curriculum and textbook.

Analysis of Meal Patterns from the Korean National Nutrition Survey in 1989 (1989년도 국민영양조사에 따른 한국인의 식사양상)

  • In this report, we investigated meal patterns by area, age, profession from the data of the Korean National Nutrition Survey which had been carried out in 1989. The proportion of home prepared meal was about 90% at breakfast and dinner, and 46.3% at lunch. People had meals outside of home mainly at lunch(31.1%), and usually ate restaurant meal(17.7%). The proportion of meal skipped was 7.1% at breakfast, 3.9% at lunch, and 1.2% at dinner. At large city, 10.3% of people skipped breakfast, it was the highest proportion among three areas(large city, small city, and rural area). Also, the proportion of meal outside of homes was the highest among all areas. In rural area, home prepared meal was prevalent for all meals. Among all age groups, people between 20 and 49 ate out most frequently. For people between age 16 and 19, meal skipping was frequent for breakfast and dinner, especially, 20.5% of girl skipped breakfast. At lunch, the proportion of meal skipping was the highest in age higher than 50 groups. Among all professions, people in service job skipped lunch and dinner at the highest proportion. Manager and deskworker skipped breakfast by 12.9% and they ate out at lunch by 82.5%.

  • This report presents the survey findings on the proportioning of ready mixed, concrete mixtures. According to this report, the W/C ratio and S/A ratio, based upon the type 25-210-12, in mix proportion of ready mixed concrete are 53% and 45% respectively. The problems to be improved, coming out in this study, are (1)using the adequate quantity of cement (2) alternation of mix design cope with the change of kinds of aggregates (3)large standard error in the mix proportion.

  • The present study deals with polishing machining of diamond for jewelry using developed automatic polishing machine that can cut diamond to have 58 facets in a brilliant cutting which has been hardly achieved by a conventional manually operating polishing machine. Upon the 3-dimensional Sarin M/C test and analysis on the machined diamond by the developed automatic polishing machine its proportion and finishing turned out to be better than the machined diamond by the conventional manually operating polishing machine.

  • In this paper, we study Bayesian estimation for the finite population proportion in binary data under selection bias. We use a Bayesian nonignorable selection model to accommodate the selection mechanism. We compare four possible estimators of the finite population proportions based on data analysis as well as Monte Carlo simulation. It turns out that nonignorable selection model might be useful for weekly biased samples.

  • We consider a finite dam with general inputs and adopt the level crossing approach to obtain explicit formulas of the expected wet period, the expected loss of water due to overflows in a wet period, and the long-run proportion of loss in inputed water.

Classification of National Highway by Factor Analysis (요인분석을 활용한 일반국도 유형분류)

  • Highway classification is an essential part of defining design criteria of roads. This study is to classify highways by factor analysis. To accomplish the objectives, factor analysis is performed for classifying highways using the traffic data observed at the permanent traffic count points in 2004. A total off variables are applied : AADT, K factor, D factor, heavy vehicle proportion, day time traffic volume proportion, peak hour volume proportion, sunday factor, vacation factor and COV(Coefficient of Variation). The results of factor analysis show that variables are divided into two factors, which are the factor related to the fluctuational characteristics of traffic volume and the factor related to heavy vehicle and directional volume characteristics. According to the results of cluster analysis, 353 permanent traffic count points are categorized into such three groups as type I for urban highway, type II for rural highway, type III for recreational highway, respectively.

An Analysis on the Proportional Reasoning Understanding of 6th Graders of Elementary School -focusing to 'comparison' situations- (초등학교 6학년 학생들의 비례 추론 능력 분석 -'비교' 상황을 중심으로-)

  • The elements of mathematical processes include mathematical reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, and mathematical communications. Proportion reasoning is a kind of mathematical reasoning which is closely related to the ratio and percent concepts. Proportion reasoning is the essence of primary mathematics, and a basic mathematical concept required for the following more-complicated concepts. Therefore, the study aims to analyze the proportion reasoning ability of sixth graders of primary school who have already learned the ratio and percent concepts. To allow teachers to quickly recognize and help students who have difficulty solving a proportion reasoning problem, this study analyzed the characteristics and patterns of proportion reasoning of sixth graders of primary school. The purpose of this study is to provide implications for learning and teaching of future proportion reasoning of higher levels. In order to solve these study tasks, proportion reasoning problems were developed, and a total of 22 sixth graders of primary school were asked to solve these questions for a total of twice, once before and after they learned the ratio and percent concepts included in the 2009 revised mathematical curricula. Students' strategies and levels of proportional reasoning were analyzed by setting up the four different sections and classifying and analyzing the patterns of correct and wrong answers to the questions of each section. The results are followings; First, the 6th graders of primary school were able to utilize various proportion reasoning strategies depending on the conditions and patterns of mathematical assignments given to them. Second, most of the sixth graders of primary school remained at three levels of multiplicative reasoning. The most frequently adopted strategies by these sixth graders were the fraction strategy, the between-comparison strategy, and the within-comparison strategy. Third, the sixth graders of primary school often showed difficulty doing relative comparison. Fourth, the sixth graders of primary school placed the greatest concentration on the numbers given in the mathematical questions.
