  • The proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) is used to the modal analysis of microcantilever of dynamic mode atomic force microscopy(AFM). The proper orthogonal modes(POM) are extracted from vibrating signals of microcantilever when it resonates and taps the sample. The POMs resemble the linear normal modes(LNM) of cantilever vibrating at each resonance frequency. Some of POMs in tapping microcantilever show quite different shapes from the POMs of the resonating microcantilever. Also this POMs can be applied to model for the complex nonlinear behavior of the dynamic mode AFM microcantilevers.

  • The guideline of selecting the number of snapshot dataset, $N_s$ in proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) was presented via the analysis of Eigen values based on the singular value decomposition(SVD). In POD, snapshot datasets from the solutions of Euler or Navier-Stokes equations are utilized to SVD and a reduced order model(ROM) is constructed as the combination of Eigen vectors. The ROM is subsequently applied to reconstruct the flowfield data with new set of flow conditions, thereby enhancing the computational efficiency. The overall computational efficiency and accuracy of POD is dependent on the number of snapshot dataset; however, there is no reliable guideline of determining $N_s$. In order to resolve this problem, the order of maximum to minimum Eigen value ratio, O(R) from SVD was analyzed and presented for the decision of $N_s$; in case of steady flow, $N_s$ should be determined to make O(R) be $10^9$. For unsteady flow, $N_s$ should be increased to make O(R) be $10^{11\sim12}$. This strategy of selecting the snapshot dataset was applied to two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil and vortex flow problems including steady and unsteady cases and the numerical accuracies according to $N_s$ and O(R) were discussed.

  • Application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is introduced to study wind speed and building roof pressures of flow separation region. In this study, a detailed analysis of the approach wind flow, wind-induced building pressure and the relation between the two fields was carried out using the POD technique and CWT analysis. The results show potential of the application of POD and CWT in characterization of spatio-temporal and spectral properties of the approach wind and its induced dynamic pressure events. Some of findings resulting from the application of this analysis can be summarized as follows: (1) The POD first principal coordinate of the roof pressure in the separated shear layer is closely correlated with the longitudinal component of oncoming flow. (2) The CWT analysis suggests that the extreme peak pressure in the separated shear layer is due to condensed large-scale eddy motions.

  • The flow characteristics in a confined slot jet impinging on a flat plate were investigated by using cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The jet Reynolds number was varied from 250 to 1000 for a fixed jet-to-plate spacing of H/W=5. We found that the vortical structures in the shear layer are developed with increase of Reynolds number and that the jet becomes unsteady by the interaction of vortex pairs between 500 and 750 of Reynolds number. Vortical structures and their temporal evolution are verified by using proper orthogonal decomposition.

  • Unsteady numerical study has been conducted on combustion dynamics of a lean-premixed swirl-stabilized gas turbine swirl injector. A three-dimensional computation method utilizing the message passing interface (MPI) parallel architecture, large eddy simulation(LES), and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique was applied. The unsteady turbulent flame dynamics are simulated so that the turbulent flame structure can be characterized in detail. It was observed that some fuel lumps escape from the primary combustion zone, and move downstream and consequently produce hot spots. Those flame dynamics coincides with experimental data. In addition, basis modes of the unsteady turbulent flame are characterized using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. The flame structure based on odd basis modes is apparently larger than that of even ones. The flame structure can be extracted from the summation of the basis modes and eigenvectors at any moment.

  • This paper presents a study on the effectiveness of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique for reconstruction of wind pressure field as applied to a cylindrical shell roof based on simultaneously measured wind pressure data. The influence of wind loading mode truncation on the statistics of dynamic pressures and wind load effects are investigated. The results showed that truncation of higher wind loading modes can have more noticeable influence on the maximum and minimum pressures that the standard derivation (STD) values. The truncation primarily affects the high-frequency content of the pressures. Estimation of background response using wind loading modes is more effective than the use of traditional structural modal analysis.

  • A new evaluation method for the performance tests of the frozen air in a refrigerator using PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) and POD(Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) techniques is introduced. A two-door refrigerator model was tested for the experiments. Actual temperature measurements were carried out for the drawer No.4 in refrigerator. By evaluating the characteristics of the interior flow of the refrigerator, an optimal shape of the drawer could be suggested through the PIV evaluation test. In this research, in order to find influences the turbulent kinetic energy contribution associated with the dynamic structures, we executed a POD analysis using the method of snapshots and the instantaneous fluctuating velocity field.
